Chapter 2: The Envelope
Marcus didn't move.
For several seconds, nobody did.
The wedding coordinator stood frozen near the ceremony doors, one hand still resting on the brass handle. Two bridesmaids whispered behind her. Somewhere in the reception hall, a glass broke.
But Marcus heard none of it.
He only heard Vanessa breathing.
Fast.
Uneven.
The stranger walked toward him.
He was in his late fifties, maybe early sixties, with silver at his temples and a narrow leather portfolio tucked beneath one arm.
He stopped six feet away.
"Mr. Reed?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Daniel Brooks.""
Marcus glanced at the envelope.
"What's that?""
Daniel looked toward Aaliyah.
"Something that belonged to her mother.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Daniel, you need to leave.""
Daniel looked at her.
"I don't think so.""
"You weren't invited.""
"No.""
His eyes returned to Marcus.
"I was asked to deliver this if the wedding ever took place.""
Marcus frowned.
"If the wedding took place?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your daughter's mother left instructions.""
Vanessa's face lost what little color remained.
Marcus noticed.
"How do you know my daughter's mother?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he held out the envelope.
"She hired me six months before she died.""
Aaliyah moved closer to Marcus.
He put an arm around her.
"What kind of instructions?""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Private ones.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"She was sick. She wasn't thinking clearly.""
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"You knew about this?""
"I knew she had old papers.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Marcus, please. Not here.""
He turned to Daniel.
"Give it to me.""
Daniel handed him the envelope.
It was heavier than Marcus expected.
His name was written across the front in black ink.
*Marcus Reed.*
Underneath, in smaller handwriting:
*For the day you finally see who she really is.*
Marcus stared at the words.
He knew that handwriting.
His stomach dropped.
It was his wife's.
Aaliyah's mother.
Nia.
He hadn't seen her handwriting in more than three years.
He ran his thumb across the ink.
Aaliyah watched him.
"Daddy?""
"I'm okay.""
He wasn't.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"What did you do with her things?""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I already told you. I put them somewhere safe.""
"Where?""
"In storage.""
"Which storage?""
"Why does it matter?""
"Because you took something from my daughter.""
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"I was trying to help her move on.""
"You broke her mother's locket.""
"I barely touched it.""
Marcus held up the broken chain.
"Then why is the clasp on the floor?""
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel quietly cleared his throat.
"There are documents in that envelope.""
Marcus turned.
"What documents?""
"Read them.""
Marcus looked toward the ceremony room.
Dozens of guests were beginning to notice something was wrong.
He didn't care.
He opened the envelope.
The first page was a photocopy of a legal document.
The second was a handwritten letter.
The third was a photograph.
Marcus stopped.
The photograph showed Nia standing outside a courthouse.
She was smiling.
Beside her was a woman Marcus had never seen before.
And in Nia's hand was a folder.
Written across the folder in thick black marker were four words:
*DO NOT TRUST VANESSA.*
Marcus stared.
Vanessa saw the photograph.
Her lips parted.
"No.""
Marcus looked at her.
"What is this?""
"It's nothing.""
"That's Nia.""
"I know who she is.""
"Then why did she write your name on the envelope?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Aaliyah tugged Marcus's sleeve.
"Daddy.""
He looked down.
"Yes?""
"There's another letter.""
"What letter?""
"The blue one.""
Vanessa immediately stepped toward her.
"Aaliyah, stop.""
Marcus moved between them.
"Don't touch her.""
Vanessa stopped.
Aaliyah's eyes filled again.
"Mommy had a blue envelope.""
Marcus crouched.
"Where?""
"In the closet.""
"What closet?""
"At home.""
Vanessa's voice came from behind him.
"She's confused.""
Aaliyah shook her head.
"No, I'm not.""
Marcus looked at her.
"When did you see it?""
"Yesterday.""
"Where?""
"In the box where you keep Mommy's things.""
Marcus's face tightened.
"I thought that box was locked.""
Aaliyah nodded.
"It was.""
He looked at Vanessa.
She said nothing.
"How did you get into it?""
Aaliyah's voice became smaller.
"She gave me the key.""
Marcus slowly turned.
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"I did not.""
Aaliyah pointed.
"You did.""
Vanessa's face hardened.
"Don't lie.""
Marcus stood.
"Enough.""
The word echoed down the hallway.
Everyone went silent.
Vanessa stared at him.
"You're really going to believe an eight-year-old over me?""
Marcus looked at Aaliyah.
Then at the envelope.
Then at Vanessa.
"I'm going to believe evidence.""
Daniel nodded slightly.
"That's why Nia contacted me.""
Marcus turned toward him.
"Contacted you when?""
"Two weeks before she died.""
Marcus's throat tightened.
"She knew she was dying?""
Daniel looked down.
"Yes.""
"And she knew Vanessa?""
"She did.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Daniel, you're twisting this.""
Daniel opened his portfolio.
"I have no reason to.""
He removed another photograph.
This one was a picture of Nia and Vanessa sitting together in a restaurant.
Marcus stared at it.
Vanessa's shoulders dropped.
"Where did you get that?""
"Nia gave it to me.""
"Why?""
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"Because she wanted you to know they weren't strangers.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"You knew my wife before she died?""
Vanessa's eyes flickered.
"It wasn't like that.""
"What was it like?""
"I met her once.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Four times.""
Vanessa snapped her head toward him.
"Don't.""
Marcus's voice dropped.
"Four times?""
Daniel nodded.
"At least.""
Aaliyah looked between the adults.
Marcus noticed her trembling.
He took off his jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.
"It's okay.""
She whispered, "Daddy, I didn't tell you everything.""
Marcus looked at her.
"What didn't you tell me?""
She stared at the floor.
"When Mommy died, Vanessa was there.""
Marcus went completely still.
"What?""
Vanessa's face changed.
Aaliyah squeezed the locket.
"She was outside the hospital.""
Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"Is that true?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Vanessa.""
She swallowed.
"I went there.""
"Why?""
"I wanted to talk to Nia.""
"About what?""
"Marcus, I was angry.""
"About what?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
But Marcus had learned enough to recognize when tears were being used as a shield.
He stepped closer.
"You knew my wife before she died. You went to the hospital. You took her daughter's letters. And now I find out she left me a warning about you.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain it.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Because if I tell you, you'll hate me.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Try me.""
Before Vanessa could answer, Daniel's phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
His face changed.
Marcus noticed.
"Who is it?""
Daniel didn't answer.
The phone rang again.
He finally picked up.
"Hello?""
He listened.
Then his eyes moved to Aaliyah.
"Yes.""
A pause.
"She's here.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Who's calling?""
Daniel covered the phone.
"It's the person who has the original blue envelope.""
Marcus's heart pounded.
"Put it on speaker.""
Daniel did.
A woman's voice came through.
Quiet.
Shaking.
But unmistakably familiar.
"Marcus?""
He stopped breathing.
The voice continued.
"If you're hearing this, Vanessa didn't destroy everything.""
Marcus stared at the phone.
Aaliyah's eyes widened.
"Daddy...""
The voice whispered:
May you like
"Your daughter is in danger.""
Then the call went dead.
