Chapter 7: The Brother Who Disappeared

The knocking stopped.

For several seconds, the house was silent.

Marcus stood in the middle of the study, the blue envelope still open on the desk and the broken locket clenched in his hand.

Outside, the man who shared his name waited.

Darius looked like he'd forgotten how to breathe.

Marcus turned toward him.

“You're going to tell me everything.””

Darius shook his head.

“I don't know everything.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

“I can't.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You've had years.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From my own family?””

“Yes.””

“From a man who looks like me?””

Darius's eyes dropped.

Marcus's voice sharpened.

“From my father's secret?””

Darius finally looked up.

“Yes.””

Aaliyah stood beside Daniel, clutching the locket.

Vanessa was pressed against the wall.

The knocking came again.

Three slow hits.

Then the voice outside.

“Darius.””

Darius closed his eyes.

The man's voice was different now.

Less friendly.

“You always were the coward.””

Marcus grabbed Darius by the collar.

“Start talking.””

Darius didn't resist.

“Our father had another son.””

Marcus stared at him.

“When?””

“Before you.””

“How much before?””

“Seven years.””

Marcus released him.

“His name?””

“Marcus.””

The word hung between them.

Darius continued.

“Our father was twenty-two. He wasn't married. His girlfriend was seventeen.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That isn't what happened.””

Darius looked at her.

“You weren't there.””

“My mother told me.””

Marcus turned.

“Your mother?””

Vanessa nodded.

“My mother knew Nia.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because Nia came to her.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

Darius shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She knew about the second child.””

Marcus stared at them.

“Why did my father make him disappear?””

Darius walked toward the desk.

“He didn't make him disappear.””

“Then what happened?””

“He was taken.””

“By who?””

Darius looked toward the front door.

“The family.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“What does that mean?””

“Our grandfather found out the child existed. He was terrified the scandal would destroy the family.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That doesn't explain anything.””

“They paid someone to take him.””

“Who?””

Darius swallowed.

“Your father's business partner.””

Marcus stared.

“That's insane.””

“I know.””

“And you knew?””

“I found out after Dad died.””

“How?””

Darius pulled a folded document from inside his jacket.

“I found this in his safe.””

Marcus took it.

The paper was old.

A transfer record.

A birth certificate.

A payment authorization.

And a photograph.

A baby wrapped in a hospital blanket.

On the back, one word was written.

*Calvin.*

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“That's your brother?””

She nodded.

“He was raised under that name.””

Marcus's fingers tightened around the photograph.

“So why does he call himself Marcus Reed?””

“Because our father gave him that name,” Darius said.

Marcus stared.

“He knew.””

“Yes.””

“He knew where he was.””

“Yes.””

“And he never told us.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Darius looked at the floor.

“Because Calvin grew up believing he had been abandoned.””

Marcus's breathing slowed.

“Who told him that?””

Darius hesitated.

“Our grandfather.””

A bitter laugh escaped Marcus.

“So the man outside thinks Dad abandoned him.””

“He did.””

Marcus looked at the door.

“And now he wants revenge.””

Darius nodded.

Vanessa whispered, “He doesn't just want revenge.””

Marcus turned.

“What does he want?””

“He wants what your father left.””

“What?””

“Control.””

Marcus frowned.

“Of what?””

“The foundation. The companies. The trust.””

Marcus looked at the papers.

“He thinks he's entitled to it?””

“He was promised it.””

“By whom?””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Your father.””

Marcus stared at her.

“No.””

“He made a deal with him.””

“What deal?””

“He would stay hidden until your father died. Then Darius would transfer the family assets to him.””

Darius shook his head.

“That was never the deal.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“That's what Calvin believes.””

Marcus looked at Darius.

“Did you know?””

“I found the agreement.””

“And?””

“I destroyed it.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“You destroyed evidence?””

“I was twenty-six.””

“You're forty now.””

“I know.””

“You had fourteen years to tell me.””

Darius looked away.

“I was afraid.””

The front door slammed open.

Aaliyah screamed.

Daniel immediately pulled her behind him.

Footsteps crossed the foyer.

Slow.

Unhurried.

Marcus moved toward the doorway.

Darius grabbed his arm.

“Don't.””

Marcus pulled free.

The man appeared at the end of the hall.

Tall.

Athletic.

Black suit.

A pale scar curved along the left side of his neck.

He looked almost exactly like Marcus.

Not identical.

Older.

Harder.

But the resemblance was undeniable.

Calvin smiled.

“Hello, brother.””

Marcus stood perfectly still.

Calvin looked at Darius.

“You finally told him.””

Darius said nothing.

Calvin's gaze moved to Vanessa.

“You kept my secret well.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was trying to stop you.””

“No.””

Calvin smiled.

“You were trying to save yourself.””

His eyes settled on Aaliyah.

She hid behind Daniel.

Calvin's smile disappeared.

“She's the reason Nia died.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don't look at my daughter.””

Calvin looked at him.

“She inherited everything.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“You're not touching her.””

“I don't want to touch her.””

“Then what do you want?””

“The trust.””

“You're not getting it.””

Calvin laughed.

“You haven't even read it.””

Marcus held up the documents.

“I know enough.””

“No, you don't.””

Calvin reached inside his jacket.

Darius stepped forward.

“Don't.””

Calvin pulled out a photograph.

He held it up.

It showed their father standing beside a woman.

Marcus recognized the woman immediately.

Nia.

But the photograph was dated four years before Marcus had met her.

Marcus stared.

“What is that?””

Calvin's smile returned.

“The first time your father met Nia.””

Marcus looked at Darius.

Darius's face had gone pale.

Calvin said, “She wasn't your father's enemy.””

Marcus's stomach tightened.

“She was working for him.””

Vanessa whispered, “No.””

Calvin looked at her.

“Yes.””

Marcus took the photograph.

On the back, another sentence was written.

*She was told to watch my son.*

Marcus stared at the words.

“Which son?””

Calvin smiled.

“That's the question Nia died trying to answer.””

Aaliyah suddenly spoke.

“That's not Mommy's handwriting.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“I know Mommy's handwriting.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

The writing was different.

The letters were sharper.

More angular.

Calvin's smile faded.

Aaliyah continued.

“Mommy wrote the note in the locket.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You're right.””

He compared the handwriting.

It wasn't Nia's.

Calvin's eyes narrowed.

“Smart girl.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Who wrote it?””

Calvin said nothing.

Darius looked at the photograph.

Then at Calvin.

“Dad.””

Calvin's expression changed.

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Darius pointed to the handwriting.

“That's Dad's.””

Calvin's face hardened.

“No.””

Darius nodded slowly.

“He wrote it.””

Marcus stared at the photograph.

The message wasn't from Nia.

It wasn't from Calvin.

It was from their father.

And beneath it was something Marcus hadn't noticed.

A date.

The date was the day before Nia died.

Marcus looked up.

“Dad was dead by then.””

Darius whispered:

“Then someone was writing in his name.””

Calvin took one step backward.

For the first time, fear crossed his face.

Marcus noticed.

“What are you afraid of?””

Calvin didn't answer.

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered, “He knows.””

Marcus turned.

“Knows what?””

Calvin suddenly ran.

Darius shouted, “Marcus, don't!””

But Marcus was already moving.

He chased his brother through the foyer and out into the sunlight.

Calvin reached the black SUV.

Marcus caught him before he could open the door.

They struggled.

Calvin shoved him against the hood.

“You should've stayed ignorant.””

Marcus grabbed his wrist.

“Who forged my father's signature?””

Calvin froze.

Marcus tightened his grip.

“Who?””

Calvin stared into his eyes.

Then whispered:

“Nia.””

Marcus released him.

Calvin jumped into the SUV.

Before driving away, he lowered the window.

“She wasn't protecting you, Marcus.””

His eyes hardened.

“She was protecting the person who killed her.””

The SUV disappeared down the road.

Marcus stood in the driveway.

Behind him, Darius stepped outside.

“Marcus…”

Marcus turned.

“What did he mean?””

Darius looked terrified.

“I don't know.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You're lying again.””

Darius looked toward the house.

“Aaliyah.””

“What about her?””

“She has to leave.””

“Why?””

“Because if Calvin is telling the truth…”

Darius stopped.

Marcus waited.

Darius whispered:

“Then Nia didn't hide the killer from you.””

“She hid the killer from Calvin.””

Marcus looked toward his daughter.

And suddenly remembered the final words on the letter.

May you like

The line he'd almost overlooked.

*The person you think needs protecting is not the person I'm protecting.*
