Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the Photograph
Marcus locked every door.
Then he called the police.
This time, he didn't ask permission.
He told the dispatcher about the threats, the photographs, the financial records, and the man who had entered his home.
When the dispatcher asked whether anyone was injured, Marcus looked at Aaliyah.
“No.””
A pause.
“But someone is trying to hurt my family.””
Two officers arrived twenty minutes later.
Marcus met them at the front door.
The older officer introduced himself as Detective Ellis.
His younger partner stayed outside near the patrol car.
Detective Ellis listened without interrupting.
Then he looked at Darius.
“Mr. Reed, we've had your brother's name connected to several financial investigations.””
Darius's face tightened.
“Which brother?””
Ellis looked at Marcus.
“That's the problem.””
Marcus frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Ellis opened a folder.
“There are two identities.””
He placed the papers on the table.
One belonged to Calvin Reed.
The other belonged to Marcus Reed.
Marcus stared.
“Why?””
“Because someone has been using your identity for years.””
Darius looked down.
Marcus turned toward him.
“You knew.””
Darius shook his head.
“I suspected.””
“That isn't enough.””
Detective Ellis looked between them.
“Your father opened accounts in both names.””
Marcus sat down.
“Why?””
Ellis hesitated.
“We don't know.””
Vanessa spoke from across the room.
“I do.””
Everyone looked at her.
She was sitting on the edge of the sofa, her wedding gown gathered around her.
“My brother wasn't the one using Marcus's identity.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then who was?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Nia.””
Marcus stood.
“No.””
“She did it to protect you.””
“From what?””
“She believed your father had planned to kill you.””
Silence.
Darius stared at her.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“Nia found records showing your father had arranged a transfer of assets after your death.””
Marcus felt the room tilt.
“My death?””
“Yes.””
“Why would he want me dead?””
“He didn't.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He wanted Calvin to believe you were dead.””
Marcus frowned.
“I don't understand.””
Darius suddenly did.
His face went pale.
“The identity.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Nia discovered the plan.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What plan?””
Darius sat down heavily.
“Dad wanted to move Calvin back into the family.””
Marcus stared.
“He couldn't do it publicly.””
“No.””
“So he created another identity for him.””
“Yes.””
“And mine?””
Darius looked at him.
“Was supposed to disappear.””
Marcus felt cold.
“You're saying Dad planned to fake my death?””
“Not exactly.””
“What then?””
“Nia thought he planned to have you killed.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“And she stopped him?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She switched the documents.””
Detective Ellis leaned forward.
“What documents?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Everything.””
She took a breath.
“Nia changed the beneficiary records, created the trust, and moved the evidence into places only Aaliyah could eventually find.””
Marcus looked at his daughter.
“She trusted an eight-year-old?””
“She trusted what you would teach her.””
Aaliyah stared at the locket.
Marcus crouched beside her.
“Baby, did Mom ever tell you anything about this?””
Aaliyah nodded.
“She told me not to give the heart to anybody.””
“Why?””
“She said one day Daddy would need it.””
Marcus took the locket.
The tiny compartment remained open.
He examined the folded paper again.
There was writing on the reverse side.
He hadn't noticed before.
A single sentence:
*The photograph is the key.*
Marcus looked at the photograph of Nia and their father.
He turned it over.
Nothing.
Then he noticed a faint crease along the edge.
He peeled back the photograph.
A second image had been attached beneath it.
Aaliyah leaned closer.
Marcus pulled it free.
His heart stopped.
It was a photograph of Nia in the hospital.
She was sitting upright in bed.
Beside her stood Calvin.
But he wasn't looking at Nia.
He was looking at someone outside the frame.
Marcus turned the photograph sideways.
A reflection appeared in the glass behind them.
A person standing in the doorway.
Marcus stared.
Black suit.
White shirt.
A familiar watch.
He looked at Darius.
“That's you.””
Darius went pale.
“No.””
“You were there.””
“I told you I was.””
“You said you came to see Nia.””
“I did.””
“Then why were you hiding in the doorway?””
Darius stared at the photograph.
“I wasn't hiding.””
“Who were you looking at?””
Darius's breathing became uneven.
“I don't remember.””
Marcus slammed the photograph onto the table.
“You don't remember?””
“I was scared.””
“Of Calvin?””
Darius shook his head.
“Of Nia.””
Marcus froze.
“Why?””
Darius looked at him.
“Because she knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That I had lied.””
“About what?””
Darius stared at his hands.
Then he whispered:
“The poisoning.””
Marcus's face went still.
Detective Ellis reached for his radio.
“What poisoning?””
Darius closed his eyes.
“I knew Nia was sick.””
Marcus's voice was barely audible.
“She wasn't sick.””
“No.””
“You knew?””
“I found the test results.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Nia asked me not to.””
Marcus stood abruptly.
“Everyone keeps saying she asked them not to!””
Darius flinched.
“She was investigating Dad.””
“What did she find?””
“A medication.””
“What medication?””
“A heart medication.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Nia didn't have a heart condition.””
“I know.””
“Then why was she taking it?””
“She wasn't.””
Darius looked toward Vanessa.
“Someone was putting it in her drinks.””
Vanessa whispered, “No.””
Darius continued.
“Nia realized it after she collapsed.””
Marcus looked at the photograph.
“Who had access to her?””
Darius didn't answer.
Marcus asked again.
“Who?””
Darius looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa shook her head.
“It wasn't me.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You were with her.””
“I know.””
“You visited her.””
“I know.””
“You handled her things.””
“I know.””
“You had motive.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I also had a reason not to kill her.””
“What?””
“Nia knew where my brother was.””
Marcus froze.
Vanessa continued.
“She threatened to expose him.””
“Why?””
“Because she believed he was dangerous.””
Marcus looked at Calvin's photograph.
“Was she right?””
“Yes.””
A sudden sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard creaked.
Everyone froze.
Detective Ellis reached for his weapon.
Marcus moved toward Aaliyah.
“Stay behind me.””
The officers searched the upper floor.
They returned a few minutes later.
Nobody was there.
But the study window was open.
The blue envelope was gone.
Marcus ran upstairs.
The laptop remained on the desk.
The documents were scattered.
The photograph of Nia was missing.
So was the flash drive.
And on the desk was a handwritten note.
Marcus picked it up.
Four words.
*You trusted the wrong brother.*
Darius stood in the doorway.
“I didn't take it.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Then who did?””
Darius didn't answer.
Detective Ellis came into the room.
“There was a second person in the house.””
Marcus looked at him.
“How do you know?””
Ellis held up a small piece of fabric.
“Found this on the window latch.””
Black silk.
Marcus looked at Vanessa's wedding gown.
Then Darius's suit.
Then his own tuxedo jacket.
The fabric didn't match any of them.
Ellis's radio crackled.
A dispatcher spoke.
“Detective, we've got a hit on the vehicle registered to Calvin Reed.””
Ellis grabbed the radio.
“Location?””
A pause.
Then:
“St. Matthew's Cemetery.””
Marcus's heart stopped.
“Nia is buried there.””
Darius whispered:
“He knows.””
Marcus grabbed his keys.
Ellis blocked him.
“You're not going alone.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I wasn't planning to.””
He turned toward Darius.
“You're coming.””
Darius swallowed.
“Why?””
Marcus's voice was cold.
“Because if there's one thing my family has been hiding from me…”
May you like
He held up the remaining piece of the locket.
“…we're going to dig it up tonight.””
