Chapter 5: The Price of Silence
Marcus didn't open the door.
“Vanessa,” he said, “step away from it.””
Silence.
Then her voice came again.
“Please.””
Darius moved toward the window.
Marcus caught his arm.
“No.””
Darius looked at him.
“If she came alone, she's not the danger.””
“You're not going anywhere.””
The doorknob stopped moving.
Vanessa spoke through the wood.
“I came because someone followed me.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“Then how do you know you were followed?””
“I saw the same car twice.””
Marcus opened the door.
Vanessa stood in the hallway.
Her wedding gown was wrinkled and stained at the hem from walking through the garden.
Her makeup had begun to run.
For the first time since Marcus had known her, she looked genuinely frightened.
Marcus stepped into the hall.
“You shouldn't be here.””
“I know.””
“How did you get inside?””
“I still have the spare key.””
Marcus held out his hand.
“Give it to me.””
She did.
He pocketed it.
Vanessa looked past him.
Her eyes landed on Darius.
“You found it.””
Darius's expression changed.
“What?””
“The letter.””
Marcus immediately noticed.
“You knew about the letter?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I knew Nia wrote something.””
“What did she say?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“I don't know everything.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You've been lying to me all day.””
“I know.””
“You broke my daughter's locket.””
“I know.””
“You took her mother's letters.””
“I know.””
“You knew Nia before she died.””
“Yes.””
“You were at the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“You searched her records.””
“Yes.””
Marcus's voice became quieter.
“And you still expected me to marry you.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
She raised her eyes.
“My mistake.””
Darius scoffed.
“You're still calling it a mistake?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You weren't there.””
“I was.””
“You were in the hallway.””
“I heard everything.””
Marcus turned toward Darius.
“What happened in that hospital room?””
Darius looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“Don't.””
Marcus said, “Tell me.””
Darius finally exhaled.
“Nia called me.””
“When?””
“The night before she died.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“She said she'd found something.””
“What?””
“Bank transfers.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Whose?””
Darius looked at Vanessa.
“Hers.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus stared.
“You were taking money from someone?””
“No.””
“Then what did Nia find?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Payments made to me.””
“From whom?””
“I don't know.””
Marcus looked at Darius.
“You said you knew who was paying her.””
“I said Nia thought I knew.””
“That's not the same thing.””
“No.””
Darius rubbed his face.
“Nia showed me copies of the transfers. The money was coming through three companies.””
“Names?””
“Blackstone Holdings. Meridian Logistics. And a nonprofit.””
Daniel stiffened.
“Which nonprofit?””
Darius looked at him.
“The Reed Family Foundation.””
Marcus stared.
His family's foundation.
His father's name was on it.
His own name was on the board.
And Darius was the executive director.
Marcus slowly turned toward his brother.
“You?””
Darius shook his head.
“I didn't authorize anything.””
“You ran the foundation.””
“Yes.””
“So someone used your organization to pay Vanessa.””
“I didn't know.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“I never asked for the money.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then why did you take it?””
She struggled to answer.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Again?””
“Yes.””
“Afraid of what?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Nia had something that could destroy me.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What?””
She whispered, “A video.””
Darius looked at her sharply.
“You said it was gone.””
“It wasn't.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“What video?””
Vanessa wiped her cheek.
“The night Nia confronted me.””
“When?””
“Three days before she died.””
Marcus's breathing slowed.
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked at Aaliyah.
“I don't want her hearing this.””
Marcus moved Aaliyah behind him.
“Then talk.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I went to Nia's house.””
“Why?””
“She told me she knew about the money.””
“And?””
“She threatened to tell you.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“What did you do?””
“I begged her.””
“You begged her?””
“Yes.””
“And she refused?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She said she had evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“A recording.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked at Darius.
He stared back.
“She recorded someone admitting they had arranged the payments.””
Marcus's eyes moved between them.
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Your father.””
Marcus stopped.
“My father is dead.””
“I know.””
“You're saying my father arranged payments to you?””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head violently.
“Not directly.””
“Then explain.””
“He left instructions before he died.””
Marcus's mind raced.
His father had died four years earlier.
Nia had died three years ago.
Vanessa had entered Marcus's life less than a year after.
The timeline suddenly looked different.
“What instructions?””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
“Your father knew about the insurance.””
Marcus frowned.
“He didn't know about Nia's policy.””
“He did.””
“How?””
“He helped her set it up.””
Marcus stared.
Daniel quietly said, “That would explain the trust structure.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Nia told me not to.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Nia believed your father was protecting Aaliyah.””
“From what?””
“From someone inside your family.””
Marcus looked at Darius.
Darius's eyes filled with something close to shame.
“Nia thought it was me.””
Marcus froze.
“You?””
“She thought I had been moving money.””
“Had you?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
“Because my name was on the accounts.””
Marcus stared.
Darius continued.
“I discovered the accounts after our father's death. I thought they were dormant. Then money started moving.””
“Who had access?””
Darius looked at Vanessa.
“She did.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I only received transfers.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You expect me to believe you?””
“No.””
That answer surprised him.
Vanessa continued.
“I'm not asking you to believe me.””
She reached into her purse.
Marcus tensed.
“Slowly.””
She pulled out a small flash drive.
Silver.
Tiny.
She held it between two fingers.
“This is what Nia left behind.””
Darius's face changed.
“You said it was destroyed.””
“I lied.””
Marcus held out his hand.
Vanessa gave him the drive.
“What is on it?””
“A video.””
“Of?””
“Nia.””
Marcus stared at the device.
“Why didn't you give this to me before?””
Vanessa's voice became a whisper.
“Because Nia told me not to.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
“She made me promise.””
“Why would she trust you?””
“She didn't.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She was blackmailing me.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“With what?””
“My brother.””
Silence.
Darius looked confused.
“You never told me you had a brother.””
Vanessa's face went pale.
“I don't.””
Marcus stared.
“Then who?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“My mother's son.””
Marcus didn't understand.
“What does that mean?””
“My mother gave him up when he was a baby.””
Darius stepped forward.
“And?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He found me years later.””
Marcus's voice dropped.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa looked toward the bedroom.
Then at Aaliyah.
“He was the person Nia was afraid of.””
Aaliyah whispered, “The man in the car?””
Vanessa stared at her.
“You saw him?””
Aaliyah nodded.
“Outside the hospital.””
Marcus crouched.
“What did he look like?””
Aaliyah closed her eyes.
“Tall.””
“How tall?””
“About Uncle Darius.””
Darius went pale.
“What else?””
“He had a scar.””
“Where?””
“Here.””
She touched the left side of her neck.
Marcus stood.
Vanessa whispered, “Oh God.””
Daniel asked, “What?””
Vanessa's eyes were fixed on Darius.
“He has that scar.””
Darius's face went blank.
Marcus looked at him.
“You know him?””
“No.””
“Darius.””
“I said no.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“That's not true.””
Darius suddenly turned toward her.
“Stop.””
Marcus caught his brother's shoulder.
“Don't move.””
Darius pulled free.
“You don't understand.””
Marcus's voice hardened.
“Then make me understand.””
Darius looked at him.
For a moment, he seemed ready to speak.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Darius looked at the screen.
No caller ID.
Marcus watched him answer.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through.
Low.
Calm.
Close enough that everyone in the room could hear it.
“Darius.””
Darius's face went white.
The caller continued.
“You were supposed to burn the blue envelope.””
Marcus's blood ran cold.
The voice laughed softly.
“You never were very good at following orders.””
The line went dead.
Marcus stared at his brother.
Darius slowly lowered the phone.
Marcus said, “Put that call on speaker next time.””
Darius whispered:
“He's here.””
Aaliyah looked toward the window.
“Daddy…”
Marcus turned.
Across the street, a black SUV was parked beneath a tree.
The driver's window was down.
A man sat behind the wheel.
Even from that distance, Marcus could see the pale scar running along the left side of his neck.
May you like
The man lifted one hand.
And waved directly at Aaliyah.
