Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Door
Andre stared at the photograph until his eyes started hurting.
The kitchen around him felt unfamiliar.
The same wooden cabinets.
The same coffee mug his mother used every morning.
The same clock above the refrigerator that had been there since he was a child.
But suddenly, none of it felt real.
Because his father had a secret.
And somehow, his mother had known.
Andre flipped the picture over again.
Marcus.
A name.
A stranger.
A brother.
He heard footsteps behind him.
His mother stopped when she saw what he was holding.
The color drained from her face.
"Andre...""
He turned around slowly.
"Who is Marcus?""
She didn't answer.
That was the answer.
Andre put the photo on the counter.
"Mom.""
She sat down.
Her hands started trembling.
"I didn't want you to find that.""
"Clearly.""
"Andre—"
"No. I need you to tell me the truth.""
She closed her eyes.
For several seconds, the only sound was the refrigerator humming.
Then she whispered:
"Your father had another life before us.""
Andre felt his chest tighten.
"What does that mean?""
"It means before he married me, he was with someone else.""
"And Marcus?""
She nodded.
"Marcus is his son.""
Andre laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
"So Dad cheated?""
"Not exactly.""
"What does that even mean?""
His mother looked toward the window.
"Your father and I were already married when I found out about Marcus.""
Andre went silent.
The words landed slowly.
"Wait.""
His voice lowered.
"You knew?""
She nodded.
"For twenty years?""
Tears filled her eyes.
"I didn't know what to do.""
Andre stood up.
"What do you mean you didn't know what to do? You could've told me.""
"And then what?""
Her voice cracked.
"Then you would have hated him.""
Andre stared at her.
"Maybe I should.""
She looked down.
"I was afraid of losing my family.""
Andre shook his head.
"You weren't protecting the family. You were protecting him.""
His mother's face changed.
A hurt expression crossed her eyes.
"Don't say that.""
"Why not? It's true.""
She looked away.
"Your father made mistakes.""
"Mistakes?""
Andre pointed at the photograph.
"Mom, this isn't forgetting someone's birthday. This is a whole person.""
His mother didn't argue.
Because she knew he was right.
That evening, Andre waited until his father came home.
He heard the truck pull into the driveway.
The garage door opened.
A few minutes later, Mr. Robinson walked inside.
He looked tired.
But when he saw Andre sitting at the kitchen table, his expression changed.
"You waiting for me?""
Andre placed the photograph down.
His father's face went completely blank.
For the first time in Andre's life, he saw his father look afraid.
"Where did you get that?""
"Answer my question.""
His father picked up the picture.
"Your mother showed you?""
"No. I found it.""
Mr. Robinson sighed.
"Andre...""
"Who is Marcus?""
Silence.
Then his father sat down.
"He's my son.""
The honesty shocked Andre more than a lie would have.
"How long have you known about him?""
His father looked away.
"Since he was born.""
"And you never told me?""
"I was trying to protect you.""
Andre almost couldn't believe it.
"Everybody keeps saying that.""
His father looked at him.
"What?""
"Protect you. Protect the family. Protect me.""
Andre leaned forward.
"Nobody protected me. You all just decided I couldn't handle the truth.""
Mr. Robinson rubbed his forehead.
"You don't understand the situation.""
"Then explain it.""
His father didn't speak.
That silence made Andre angry.
"Where is he?""
His father looked up.
"Who?""
"Marcus.""
A long pause.
Then his father said:
"He's been trying to find me.""
Andre froze.
"What?""
His father's phone buzzed on the table.
Both of them looked down.
A message appeared.
*Unknown Number: I know Andre knows now. We need to talk.*
Andre looked at his father.
His father looked at the phone.
And in that moment, Andre realized something.
May you like
Marcus wasn't a secret from the past.
He was still part of his father's life.
