Chapter 7: The Accident Nobody Knew About
Mr. Robinson opened his eyes slowly.
The first person he saw was Andre.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then his father whispered:
"You read it.""
Andre held the letter.
"Yeah.""
His father looked away.
"I wasn't ready for you to know.""
Andre almost smiled.
"That's your favorite sentence, isn't it?""
His father's eyes closed.
Because he knew Andre was right.
"I'm sorry.""
Two words.
Simple.
But coming from his father, they felt impossible.
Andre pulled a chair closer.
"Tell me about the accident.""
Mr. Robinson became still.
Across the room, Marcus and Mrs. Robinson listened.
His father stared at the ceiling.
"Her name was Evelyn.""
Andre waited.
"She was Marcus' mother.""
"I know.""
Mr. Robinson nodded.
"I met her when I was young. I was reckless. I thought I had all the time in the world.""
His voice was weak.
"One night, I made a terrible decision.""
Andre leaned forward.
"What decision?""
His father swallowed.
"I drove when I shouldn't have.""
The room went quiet.
Andre felt his stomach drop.
"You were drinking?""
His father looked down.
"Yes.""
Marcus stood up immediately.
"You never told me that.""
Mr. Robinson looked at him.
"I was ashamed.""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Funny. You were ashamed after you left. After you disappeared. After she had to raise me alone.""
His father accepted the anger.
Because he deserved it.
"I hit another car.""
Andre felt a chill.
"What happened?""
Mr. Robinson's voice cracked.
"Evelyn was in the other car.""
Nobody moved.
"I thought she was going to die.""
Marcus looked at his father.
"But she didn't.""
"No.""
"Then what happened?""
Mr. Robinson closed his eyes.
"She lost the use of her left arm.""
Marcus stared.
"And you walked away?""
The question cut through the room.
Mr. Robinson shook his head.
"No.""
Marcus looked confused.
"What?""
"I didn't walk away.""
Andre looked at his father.
"Then what happened?""
His father took a shaky breath.
"I stayed.""
Everyone froze.
"You stayed?"" Marcus asked.
"I stayed at the hospital. I paid every bill. I helped her recover.""
Marcus' face changed.
"Then why did she say you abandoned us?""
Mr. Robinson looked broken.
"Because eventually, I did.""
The honesty hurt more.
"I was afraid. I was afraid of being known as the man who ruined her life. I was afraid my mistake would follow me forever.""
Andre stared.
"So you ran.""
His father nodded.
"I ran.""
The room was silent.
Then Marcus spoke.
"Do you know what my mother told me before she died?""
Mr. Robinson looked at him.
"She said the worst pain wasn't the accident.""
Marcus' voice shook.
"It was believing the person responsible cared enough to stay.""
Mr. Robinson looked away.
Andre watched his father absorb those words.
For once, he had nowhere to hide.
Later that evening, after the doctors allowed visitors to leave, Andre sat alone in the hospital hallway.
Marcus joined him.
"You okay?""
Andre shrugged.
"No.""
Marcus nodded.
"Me neither.""
They sat quietly.
Two brothers who had been strangers days earlier.
Now connected by the same complicated man.
"I spent years hating him," Marcus said.
Andre looked at him.
"And now?""
Marcus looked through the hospital window.
"Now I understand him.""
Andre frowned.
"That doesn't mean he should be forgiven.""
"I know.""
Marcus sighed.
"But understanding someone doesn't erase what they did.""
Andre thought about that.
It was the first time since everything began that he felt like he could separate two things.
His father could be human.
And still be wrong.
The next morning, Mr. Robinson was discharged.
But before they left, Daniel Carter arrived.
He carried another folder.
Andre immediately knew something was wrong.
"What now?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"There is one more thing your father needs to explain.""
Mr. Robinson's face changed.
"Daniel.""
Daniel looked at him.
"You can't keep doing this.""
Andre looked between them.
"What?""
Daniel handed Andre the folder.
"I found this years ago.""
Andre opened it.
Inside was a newspaper article.
The headline made his blood run cold.
*LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER SAVES FAMILY AFTER FATAL CRASH*
Andre stared.
"What is this?""
Daniel said quietly:
"Your father wasn't just involved in the accident.""
Andre looked up.
"Then what?""
May you like
Daniel took a breath.
"He was also the reason the accident happened.""
