Chapter 4: The Truth Everyone Buried

The letter changed everything.

Andre read it three times.

Then a fourth.

Because each time, he hoped the words would somehow rearrange themselves into something less painful.

They didn't.

His father hadn't simply made a mistake.

He had made a choice.

According to Marcus' mother, Mr. Robinson had planned to leave her and Marcus.

But when he met Mrs. Robinson, he chose a new life.

A clean start.

A family that didn't know his past.

Andre sat at the kitchen table holding the letter.

His father walked in.

"You talked to Marcus.""

Andre didn't look up.

"Yeah.""

"Did he show you something?""

Andre placed the letter down.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Mr. Robinson went quiet.

"Andre...""

"Why?""

His father sat across from him.

"I was ashamed.""

Andre looked at him.

"That's the first honest thing you've said.""

His father looked hurt.

But Andre didn't stop.

"You spent my whole life teaching me that family means everything.""

Mr. Robinson lowered his eyes.

"And I failed.""

The admission surprised him.

Because his father rarely admitted anything.

But it wasn't enough.

"You hurt three people.""

His father looked up.

"Three?""

"Mom. Marcus. Me.""

Mr. Robinson rubbed his hands together.

"I thought if I buried the past, it would stay buried.""

Andre shook his head.

"Secrets don't disappear. They wait.""

Behind them, Mrs. Robinson stood in the doorway.

She had heard everything.

"I should have left.""

Both men looked at her.

She walked into the kitchen.

"I should have left the day I found out.""

Mr. Robinson stood.

"Please.""

"No.""

Her voice was stronger than Andre had ever heard.

"I spent years telling myself I was staying for Andre.""

She looked at her son.

"But maybe I was just afraid.""

Andre watched his mother carefully.

For the first time, she wasn't crying.

She looked free.

Mr. Robinson sat back down.

"What do you want me to do?""

Mrs. Robinson answered immediately.

"The truth.""

That night, the family finally had the conversation they avoided for decades.

No yelling.

No threats.

Just pain.

Marcus explained what he lost.

His father listened.

Really listened.

And Andre saw something he never thought he would see.

His father crying.

"I can't fix what I did," Mr. Robinson said.

Marcus nodded.

"No. You can't.""

The words hurt.

But they were honest.

A week later, Andre thought things might finally begin healing.

Then he received a phone call from an unknown number.

"Is this Andre Robinson?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Daniel Carter. I need to speak with you about your father.""

Andre frowned.

"Who are you?""

There was silence.

Then the man said:

"I was your father's business partner.""

Andre looked toward the window.

"Okay. Why are you calling me?""

The man's voice lowered.

"Because Marcus isn't the only thing your father hid from your family.""

Andre felt his stomach drop.

"What are you talking about?""

"I think you deserve to know where your father's money came from.""

Andre stood up.

"What does that mean?""

The man paused.

May you like

Then said:

"Your father has been preparing for this moment for years.""
