Chapter 9: Three Sons

Nobody moved.

The photograph sat in the middle of the table.

Another son.

Another secret.

Andre felt like he couldn't breathe.

"No.""

His father looked at him.

"Andre—"

"No.""

He pushed the picture away.

"You're telling me there is another brother?""

Mr. Robinson nodded.

Andre stood.

"How many people were living a different life while I was growing up?""

His mother looked devastated.

"I didn't know.""

Andre looked at her.

"Are you sure?""

She nodded quickly.

"I swear.""

That mattered.

Because through all the betrayal, his mother had never lied to him directly.

Marcus picked up the photograph.

"Who is he?""

Mr. Robinson answered quietly.

"His name is Caleb.""

"Where is he?""

His father looked down.

"I don't know.""

The words shocked everyone.

"What do you mean you don't know?""

Mr. Robinson took a breath.

"I met his mother after Marcus was born.""

Andre stared.

"You had another relationship?""

"Yes.""

The room felt smaller.

"I ended it before I met your mother.""

Marcus looked angry.

"So why does another son exist?""

Mr. Robinson's eyes filled with regret.

"Because I didn't know about Caleb until years later.""

Andre frowned.

"What?""

"His mother never told me she was pregnant.""

Silence.

"She found me twenty years later.""

Andre looked at the picture.

"And?""

His father swallowed.

"By then, she was gone.""

"What happened to Caleb?""

"I tried to find him.""

"But?""

His father looked at the key.

"I failed.""

Nobody spoke.

Andre felt exhausted.

Not angry.

Not even surprised anymore.

Just exhausted.

How many missing pieces could one family have?

That night, Andre couldn't sleep.

He sat in the living room staring at the ceiling.

Then Marcus walked in.

"You okay?""

Andre shook his head.

"No.""

Marcus sat beside him.

"Me neither.""

Andre laughed softly.

"We really got unlucky with this family.""

Marcus smiled.

"Maybe.""

A moment passed.

Then Marcus said:

"But maybe we got lucky too.""

Andre looked at him.

"How?""

"Because we found each other.""

The words stayed with Andre.

The next day, Andre and Marcus decided to look for Caleb.

Not because their father deserved forgiveness.

But because Caleb deserved the truth.

They used old records.

Old addresses.

Old contacts.

For weeks, they searched.

Until finally, Marcus found something.

A name.

A location.

A phone number.

Andre stared at the screen.

"Do we call?""

Marcus nodded.

"We have to.""

The call rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then someone answered.

A man's voice.

"Hello?""

Andre looked at Marcus.

"Hi. My name is Andre Robinson.""

Silence.

Then:

"Robinson?""

Andre swallowed.

"Yes.""

The man's voice changed.

"How do you know that name?""

Andre looked at the photograph.

"Because I think you're my brother.""

Long silence.

Then the man whispered:

"My father told me I didn't have a family.""

Andre closed his eyes.

"That's not true.""

The man breathed heavily.

"Who are you?""

Andre answered:

"Someone who spent his whole life not knowing you existed.""

The man didn't speak.

Then he said:

"I need to meet you.""

Three days later, Caleb walked into their house.

And when Mr. Robinson saw him, he started crying.

Not because he was afraid.

Because for the first time in decades, every secret he buried was standing in front of him.

Three sons.

One father.

One lifetime of mistakes.

Caleb looked at him.

"I wondered if you would recognize me.""

Mr. Robinson couldn't speak.

Finally, he whispered:

"I always knew I had failed you.""

Caleb nodded.

"Then why didn't you look harder?""

The question destroyed him.

But this time, he didn't run.

"I should have.""

And for the first time, all three sons heard their father say the words they needed.

"I'm sorry.""

But forgiveness wasn't the end.

Because the next morning, Caleb brought something with him.

May you like

A document.

A document that revealed the biggest secret of all.
