Chapter 3: The Name Nobody Expected
For thirty years, everyone believed Whitmore Holdings had one future.
Me.
Daniel Whitmore’s only daughter.
The person who would inherit his legacy.
But my father’s hidden document suggested something else.
Something impossible.
I sat in my apartment that night surrounded by papers.
Financial records.
Old contracts.
Family documents.
Anything that could explain the sentence.
The heir is not who everyone thinks.
At 2:13 a.m., I found a document hidden among my father’s personal records.
A birth certificate.
Not mine.
Someone else’s.
I stared at the name.
*Lucas Bennett.*
I had never heard of him.
The next morning, I confronted my mother.
She was sitting in her garden when I arrived.
She immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
I placed the document on the table.
Her face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“Where did you get this?””
My stomach dropped.
“You know who Lucas is.””
She looked away.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“No, you don’t get to do that. Everyone keeps telling me they’re protecting me. Everyone keeps hiding things from me.””
She closed her eyes.
“Your father wanted to tell you.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
My mother’s hands trembled.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of what would happen when Lucas came back.””
The words made no sense.
“Came back?””
She nodded slowly.
“Lucas is your father’s son.””
The world became quiet.
I couldn’t hear the birds.
The wind.
Anything.
“My father had a son?””
“Yes.””
“And I never knew?””
My mother looked devastated.
“Because Daniel made a mistake before you were born. A mistake he spent his entire life trying to fix.””
I stood up.
“So Ryan knew?””
Her silence answered.
I walked outside.
Everything I believed about my family had been rewritten in seconds.
Later that day, I found Lucas.
He lived two hours outside the city.
A simple house.
No security.
No luxury.
Nothing like the Whitmore world.
When he opened the door, he looked surprised.
But not confused.
“You’re Emma.””
I froze.
“You know me?””
He smiled sadly.
“I’ve known about you my whole life.””
That hurt more than I expected.
“Then why didn’t I know about you?””
His expression hardened.
“Because your father chose you.””
I stepped back.
“That’s not what he told me.””
Lucas looked away.
“My entire life, I was the secret.””
I wanted to hate him.
But I couldn’t.
Because he looked just as hurt as I felt.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Ryan didn’t steal from your father.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Lucas walked inside and returned with a folder.
“He stole from me.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you talking about?””
Lucas opened the folder.
Inside were documents proving he was the original beneficiary of a trust created by my father.
A trust worth hundreds of millions.
Ryan had controlled it.
My father’s warning suddenly made sense.
Ryan wasn’t trying to take the company.
He was trying to erase the person who could stop him.
Lucas looked at me.
“Your father found out.””
“And then?””
“He was planning to expose Ryan.””
I whispered:
“Before he died.””
Lucas nodded.
Then he handed me one final document.
“The problem is… Ryan wasn’t acting alone.””
I looked at the signature.
My hands went cold.
Because the second name on the document belonged to someone I trusted.
Someone who had cried at my father’s funeral.
May you like
Someone who had hugged me and told me everything would be okay.
My mother.
