Chapter 5: The Final Page

I couldn’t speak.

My mother stood beside Ryan.

Her face was pale.

Broken.

But she was there.

With him.

Ryan looked at me.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

I backed away.

“You lied to me.””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Emma, please listen.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No more secrets.””

Ryan sighed.

“Your father made everyone believe he was the victim. But Daniel Whitmore was not an innocent man.””

I stared at him.

“You’re blaming my father?””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“You stole from him.””

Ryan smiled sadly.

“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””

He placed a folder on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Old documents.

Letters.

My father’s handwriting.

I picked up the first letter.

And my hands started shaking.

Because it was addressed to Ryan.

*“If you are reading this, then Emma has discovered the truth.””*

I looked at Ryan.

“What is this?””

He didn’t answer.

I read more.

The letter explained everything.

My father knew Ryan was investigating Lucas.

He knew Ryan suspected the trust.

But there was one thing I didn’t understand.

Why would Dad leave clues leading to Ryan if Ryan wasn’t the real enemy?

I looked at my mother.

“Tell me the truth.””

She whispered:

“Your father asked me to help him.””

“Help him do what?””

Her voice broke.

“Expose the person who was controlling Ryan.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Ryan.

He looked exhausted.

Not victorious.

Defeated.

Then he said:

“Your father knew I was being threatened.””

I froze.

“What?””

Ryan sat down.

“I didn’t betray Daniel because I wanted power.””

“Then why?””

His eyes moved to the floor.

“Because they had my daughter.””

I stared.

“What daughter?””

Ryan looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.

“Emma… you need to understand something.””

He opened the final document.

The last page.

The one my father had hidden from everyone.

My eyes moved across the paper.

And every piece finally connected.

The company.

The trust.

The fake betrayal.

The hidden heir.

All of it.

Because at the bottom of the page was a name.

A name that changed everything.

My father’s final note was only one sentence.

*“The person who destroyed this family has been sitting at this table from the beginning.””*

Ryan looked at me.

My mother looked at me.

And then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

*“Ask your mother what happened the night Lucas was born.””*
