Chapter 4: The Betrayal Within

I didn’t sleep.

I couldn’t.

The document sat on my kitchen table all night.

My mother’s signature stared back at me.

A signature I recognized.

A signature I had seen thousands of times.

But there was something I refused to believe.

My mother betrayed my father?

Impossible.

The next morning, I went back to her house.

She opened the door and immediately knew.

“You found out.””

I hated that she wasn’t surprised.

“Tell me it isn’t true.””

She looked at the paper in my hand.

Then she closed her eyes.

“Emma…”

“Tell me.””

She sat down.

“I didn’t betray him.””

“Your signature is right there.””

“I signed it because Daniel asked me to.””

I stopped.

“What?””

My mother looked up.

“Your father created that document as a trap.””

I stared at her.

“A trap?””

She nodded.

“Ryan was looking for proof that Lucas existed. Daniel knew Ryan would try to steal the trust. So he created fake paperwork.””

My head spun.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he didn’t know who was loyal.””

That sentence hurt.

Even my own family had become a mystery.

My mother reached for my hand.

“Your father loved you more than anything.””

“Then why leave me with all this?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because he knew someone had to finish what he started.””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Lucas.

I picked up.

“Emma, you need to get out.””

My body went still.

“What?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

His voice lowered.

“Ryan knows you have the documents.””

I looked toward the window.

A black car was parked outside.

“Emma?””

I whispered:

“He’s here.””

The line went silent.

Then Lucas said:

“Don’t open the door.””

A knock came.

Three slow knocks.

My heart pounded.

“Emma,” Ryan called from outside.

His voice was calm.

Friendly.

“I know you’re there.””

I didn’t move.

Another knock.

“I don’t want this to get ugly.””

I almost laughed.

Because everything about Ryan had always been ugly.

Just hidden beneath expensive suits and polite smiles.

“Emma,” he said.

“You need to understand something.””

I stayed silent.

Then he spoke again.

“The person your father trusted most was never me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“It was someone you would never suspect.””

The door handle moved.

Someone had unlocked it.

My blood turned cold.

Because Ryan wasn’t trying to break in.

He already had access.

And then I remembered.

My father’s old security system.

Only three people had access.

Me.

My mother.

And Ryan.

The door opened slowly.

Ryan stepped inside.

But he wasn’t alone.

Standing behind him was someone I never expected to see.

May you like

Someone who should have been on my side.

My mother.
