Chapter 9: My Father’s Last Move
I read the sentence again.
Destroy what I built.
Those words followed me all night.
After Victor’s arrest.
After Ryan’s daughter was found.
After the police finally explained what had happened.
Nothing felt like a victory.
Because I was still holding the question my father had left behind.
Why would he want me to destroy his company?
The next morning, I returned to Whitmore Holdings.
The building looked the same.
But I didn’t.
Employees stopped talking when I walked by.
Everyone knew something had happened.
Everyone knew the company was changing.
Inside the boardroom, the remaining directors waited.
Mr. Harris stood.
“Emma, before we begin—”
“No.””
I placed the final file on the table.
“Before we begin, everyone needs to hear the truth.””
Nobody moved.
I connected my father’s recordings to the screen.
A video appeared.
My father.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My breath caught.
I had never seen this.
“Emma,” his voice said.
“If you’re watching this, then I’m gone.””
The room went silent.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words almost broke me.
“I spent my life building this company. But somewhere along the way, I forgot the reason I built it.””
He paused.
“I thought power would protect my family.””
The video continued.
“But power attracts people who only want to control it.””
The directors watched carefully.
My father named them.
Not all.
Only three.
Three people connected to the old network.
People who had secretly controlled decisions for years.
Then he said something that shocked everyone.
“Whitmore Holdings cannot survive under my name.””
I looked around the room.
The directors were stunned.
My father continued:
“Emma, if you have reached this point, you have already proven something.””
He smiled sadly.
“You are not like me.””
A tear slipped down my face.
“You still know the difference between winning and doing what is right.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Mr. Harris quietly said:
“Your father planned to dissolve the company?””
I nodded.
“He wanted it rebuilt.””
“By who?””
I looked at the documents.
“The employees.””
The room erupted.
People argued.
Some called it impossible.
Others called it madness.
But I understood my father’s final move.
He wasn’t protecting his empire.
He was trying to end it.
Because an empire built on fear always collapses.
Ryan stood beside me.
“You’re going to do it.””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
He smiled slightly.
“Your father would be proud.””
I looked at him.
“I hope so.””
That evening, I visited Lucas.
He was standing outside his house.
Waiting.
“I heard.””
I nodded.
“I’m changing the company.””
Lucas smiled.
“Good.””
“You’re not angry?””
He shook his head.
“I spent my whole life wanting the Whitmore name.””
He looked toward the road.
“Now I realize I wanted something else.””
“What?””
“A family.””
The answer hurt.
Because he deserved one.
I stepped forward.
“I don’t know how to fix thirty years.””
Lucas looked at me.
“Neither do I.””
A small smile appeared.
“But we can start with one day.””
For the first time in weeks, I felt something close to peace.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice said:
“Emma Whitmore?””
“Yes.””
“You think Victor Hale was the end?””
My body went cold.
“Who is this?””
The man laughed.
“You’re still looking at the people who followed your grandfather.””
A pause.
Then:
“You never asked who created the network.””
The call ended.
I looked at Lucas.
Because I already knew.
The story wasn’t over.
My father had destroyed the old empire.
May you like
But someone had built it.
And they were still alive.
