Chapter 10: The Last Page

The car tore down the estate driveway.

Officer Miller shouted into his radio.

“Suspect vehicle leaving the east entrance! Block the road!””

Two police vehicles immediately moved.

Daniel barely noticed.

He was still staring at Evelyn.

“You adopted me?””

Evelyn nodded through tears.

“Your birth mother was my closest friend.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“And you knew?””

Richard nodded.

“From the beginning.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Why didn't you tell him?””

Richard looked exhausted.

“Because we promised his mother we would protect him.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Protect me from what?””

Evelyn took his hands.

“Your birth mother was the original owner of the fortune. She created the trust before she died. She wanted you to inherit it.””

Daniel looked toward Noah.

“Then why was Noah listed as the beneficiary?””

“Because I changed the arrangement.””

Evelyn swallowed.

“When your birth mother died, I believed the money would become a target. I divided the trust between you and Noah. Noah's mother was my friend's daughter. She wanted her son to have security.””

Daniel stared.

“And Vanessa knew?””

“She discovered the original documents after marrying Richard.””

Richard lowered his head.

“She found the old trust agreement in my office.””

Daniel looked at him.

“So that's why she wanted Noah dead?””

Richard nodded.

“If Noah was legally declared dead, the money would have transferred according to the original beneficiary clause.””

Daniel frowned.

“To me?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No. To the person named as the successor trustee.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Who?””

Evelyn took the missing-page envelope from the evidence bag.

It had been hidden inside Lily's teddy bear.

She carefully unfolded it.

At the bottom was a name.

*DANIEL BENNETT — SOLE BENEFICIARY AND TRUSTEE.*

Daniel stared.

He had been the intended beneficiary all along.

Vanessa had manipulated the entire family to gain control of money that would eventually belong to him.

Michael stepped forward.

“She didn't just want the money.””

Daniel looked at him.

“She wanted the family to destroy itself.””

Michael nodded.

“She knew that if Noah disappeared and the trust transferred to you, she could use Richard's signature to control the estate.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I gave her everything she needed.””

Daniel looked toward his father.

“Why?””

Richard's voice cracked.

“Because I believed she loved me.””

Nobody spoke.

For a long moment, the only sound was the wind moving through the branches of the old oak tree.

Then Officer Miller returned.

“We have a vehicle stopped at the east entrance.””

Daniel turned.

“Vanessa?””

The officer shook his head.

“Not Vanessa. Her attorney.””

He paused.

“And we found something else.””

He held up a small black device.

“A second camera.””

Daniel frowned.

“Where?””

“Inside the vehicle.””

Officer Miller looked toward the children.

“Someone was recording this entire conversation.””

Evelyn immediately pulled Amara and Lily closer.

Daniel looked at the device.

“Can you tell who installed it?””

“We're checking.””

Then Michael stepped forward.

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

Michael pointed toward Marcus.

“He was standing near the vehicle before we arrived.””

Marcus raised his hands.

“I didn't install anything.””

Michael stared at him.

“You knew about the recording.””

Marcus looked away.

Daniel's voice became cold.

“Tell the truth.””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He removed a small remote control.

“I was supposed to activate it when Vanessa called.””

Officer Miller immediately approached.

“Put that down.””

Marcus complied.

Daniel looked at him.

“You helped her monitor us?””

Marcus nodded.

“I'm sorry.””

Noah stepped forward.

“Are you going to take us back?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No, buddy.””

“Promise?””

Marcus looked at the child.

Then he nodded.

“I promise.””

Officer Miller placed Marcus under arrest for his involvement in the conspiracy.

The little girl, Lily, began crying.

“Is Uncle Marcus bad?””

Daniel crouched beside her.

“He made some bad choices, sweetheart. But you're safe now.””

Lily looked toward the house.

“Can we go home?””

Daniel glanced at Michael.

Michael nodded.

“Yes, baby. We're going home.””

But before they could leave, Officer Miller's phone rang.

He listened.

Then his expression changed.

“Understood.””

He ended the call.

“Mrs. Whitmore has been located.””

Daniel straightened.

“Where?””

“At the hotel. She was attempting to access a private storage unit.””

Michael frowned.

“What was inside?””

The officer looked at Daniel.

“Documents. Passports. And a second ledger.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“What's in it?””

“Names of everyone who received money from the trust.””

Richard looked up.

“How many?””

The officer answered.

“Twenty-three.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Twenty-three people.

Twenty-three people had apparently been paid to keep a child hidden.

And Vanessa had been paying them for years.

Daniel looked toward Noah.

“Do you recognize any of the names?””

Noah nodded slowly.

“One.””

“Who?””

The boy pointed at the evidence sheet.

“Mr. Harris.””

Richard frowned.

“Which Mr. Harris?””

“The man who brought me food.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Who is Mr. Harris?””

She answered quietly.

“The caretaker at the estate.””

Michael's expression changed.

“He was supposed to be retired.””

Daniel looked toward the driveway.

“Where is he now?””

Officer Miller checked his radio.

A response came almost immediately.

“Caretaker is missing. His vehicle was found abandoned near the north gate.””

The officer looked at Daniel.

“We'll need to search the property again.””

Daniel nodded.

Then Noah spoke.

“There's another room.””

Everyone turned.

“What room?”” Daniel asked.

Noah looked toward the mansion.

“Under the stairs.””

Michael's face changed.

“Are you sure?””

Noah nodded.

“Mr. Harris told me never to go inside.””

Daniel looked toward the house.

The old estate had been his home for most of his childhood.

He knew every staircase.

Every corridor.

Every hidden storage room.

But he had never heard of a room beneath the main staircase.

Officer Miller signaled for additional officers.

They entered the mansion together.

The hallway smelled of old wood and furniture polish.

Daniel walked ahead.

At the bottom of the main staircase, he noticed a decorative wooden panel.

It looked ordinary.

But Noah pointed toward a small brass handle hidden beneath the railing.

“That's it.””

Daniel pulled.

The panel opened.

Behind it was a narrow door.

Officer Miller knocked.

“Police. Open the door.””

No answer.

The officers carefully forced it open.

Inside was a small room containing a desk, several filing cabinets, and a wall covered with photographs.

Daniel stepped inside.

His breath caught.

There were photographs of Noah.

Photographs of Amara.

Photographs of Lily.

And photographs of Daniel.

Some had been taken at family gatherings.

Others showed him entering his office, leaving his apartment, and driving home.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“Oh, my God.””

Daniel approached the desk.

A laptop sat open.

Beside it was a stack of envelopes.

One had his name written across the front.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph of himself as a newborn.

His birth mother was holding him.

On the back, someone had written:

*He must never learn what happened the night his mother died.*

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Mom?””

She began crying.

“Your birth mother didn't die naturally.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“What?””

Evelyn took a trembling breath.

“She was murdered.””

Daniel stared.

“By whom?””

Evelyn looked toward Richard.

Richard shook his head.

“I didn't know.””

But Evelyn wasn't looking at him.

She was looking at the photographs.

Then she pointed toward one showing Vanessa standing beside a man in a police uniform.

Daniel examined it.

The officer was much younger, but his face was familiar.

Officer Miller stepped closer.

He looked at the photograph.

Then his expression changed.

“That's impossible.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Miller stared at the picture.

The man standing beside Vanessa was his own father.

A police detective who had investigated the original accident.

And who had signed the report declaring Daniel's birth mother dead.

Miller stepped backward.

“My father retired fifteen years ago.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“He didn't retire.””

She pointed toward the photograph.

“He was paid to make sure nobody discovered the truth.””

The room fell silent.

Daniel looked at Officer Miller.

“Did you know?””

Miller shook his head.

“No.””

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

A voice came through.

An older man's voice.

“James, get away from that family.””

Miller froze.

“Dad?””

The voice continued.

“Whatever they told you, don't believe it.””

Miller looked at Daniel.

Then at the photograph.

His father spoke again.

“Your father didn't kill that woman.””

A pause.

Then came the sentence that made Daniel's blood run cold.

*“I did.””*

May you like

The call ended.

And from somewhere outside the mansion, a gunshot echoed through the night.
