Chapter 5: The Message From His Father

The ambulance arrived at 10:16 p.m.

Noah was examined by paramedics in a private hotel suite while officers photographed the blue room and collected its contents.

Daniel refused to leave his nephew's side.

Evelyn sat beside the boy, holding his hand.

Amara had climbed onto the sofa and placed Buttons in Noah's lap.

“Can he stay with us?”” she asked.

The paramedic smiled gently.

“We're going to make sure he's safe, sweetheart.””

Noah looked at Amara.

“You found me.””

Amara nodded.

“I knew you weren't a ghost.””

Noah almost smiled.

“I thought everybody had forgotten me.””

Evelyn leaned forward.

“Never, darling. Not for one day.””

The paramedic finished checking his vital signs.

“He's dehydrated and underweight. We need to take him to the hospital for a more thorough examination.””

Daniel nodded.

“I'll go with him.””

Noah grabbed his hand.

“Can Grandma come?””

“Of course.””

Evelyn kissed the boy's forehead.

“I'm not going anywhere.””

Before they could leave, Officer Miller approached Daniel.

“We recovered several items from that room.””

He handed Daniel a transparent evidence bag.

Inside was a small notebook, a collection of children's drawings, and a folded sheet of paper.

Daniel opened the notebook.

The first page contained Noah's name.

The following pages were filled with dates.

Some entries were written in a child's handwriting.

Others appeared to have been added by an adult.

Daniel read one entry.

November 3. I asked to call Grandma. She said no.

Another.

November 19. I told Mr. Whitmore I wanted to go home. He said I had to be patient.

Daniel stopped.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Officer Miller nodded.

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

Daniel turned another page.

A photograph had been taped inside.

It showed Noah standing beside a woman in a dark coat.

Her face was partially obscured, but Daniel recognized her immediately.

His mother.

Evelyn.

The photograph had been taken inside the blue room.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*She came looking for me. They told her I wasn't here.*

Daniel looked toward his mother.

“Mom?””

Evelyn took the photograph.

Her eyes widened.

“I've never seen this.””

Noah sat up slightly.

“You came once.””

Evelyn turned toward him.

“When, sweetheart?””

“Before Christmas.””

She shook her head.

“Noah, I would never have left you here.””

“I know.””

The boy's voice was quiet.

“But Vanessa told me you came and went home.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel looked at the officer.

“Did Vanessa know my mother had been here?””

“We'll investigate that.””

Noah reached for the notebook.

“There's something else.””

He opened it to the final page.

A small drawing showed a house, a car, and three stick figures.

One was labeled GRANDMA.

One was labeled NOAH.

The third was labeled DAD.

Beside them was a sentence.

*Daddy said he would come back when the papers were signed.*

Daniel stared at the words.

“What papers?””

Noah looked toward the hospital bag.

“I don't know.””

Officer Miller took a photograph of the page.

“Did your father tell you anything about those documents?””

Noah shook his head.

“He said Aunt Vanessa wanted something. He told me not to let her take the blue folder.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

The blue folder.

He knew exactly what Noah meant.

Richard Bennett kept important family documents in a blue leather folder inside his home office.

Property deeds.

Trust agreements.

Insurance papers.

And the documents connected to the family estate.

Daniel had seen it countless times.

“Where is the folder now?”” he asked.

Noah looked frightened.

“She has it.””

Daniel turned toward Officer Miller.

“Vanessa?””

The officer nodded.

“She had a handbag when we detained her. We'll inventory it.””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

He called his father.

The first call went unanswered.

The second went to voicemail.

Then his phone vibrated.

A text message appeared.

*I'm downstairs. Come alone.*

Daniel stared at it.

Evelyn noticed his expression.

“Who is it?””

“My father.””

She stood immediately.

“Richard is here?””

Daniel nodded.

“Apparently.””

Officer Miller looked at him.

“Don't go anywhere alone. If your father has information about a missing child, we need to speak with him.””

Daniel showed him the message.

The officer read it twice.

“I'm coming with you.””

They left Evelyn with Noah and Amara under the supervision of another officer.

The elevator doors closed.

Daniel stared at the numbers above them.

“Do you think my father knew?”” he asked.

Officer Miller answered carefully.

“I think we need to hear what he has to say.””

The elevator opened onto the hotel's ground floor.

Richard Bennett stood near the reception desk.

He was sixty-one, tall, silver-haired, and impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit.

His face looked tired.

He was holding a brown leather briefcase.

When he saw Daniel, he took a step forward.

“Son.””

Daniel didn't move.

“Where have you been?””

Richard glanced at the officer.

“I'd prefer to discuss this privately.””

“Not happening.””

Richard sighed.

“I understand you're upset.””

Daniel laughed once.

“Upset?””

His voice rose.

“You told us Noah was dead!””

Richard looked down.

“I had reasons.””

“You had reasons?””

“I was trying to protect him.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“From whom?””

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel pointed toward the elevator.

“Your grandson has been locked in a room for two years. He thought everyone had forgotten him.””

Richard's face crumpled.

“I know.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You know?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The silence that followed was enormous.

Officer Miller stepped forward.

“Mr. Bennett, I need you to explain your involvement.””

Richard placed the briefcase on the reception desk.

“I brought something.””

He opened it.

Inside was a blue leather folder.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

The missing folder.

Richard removed a document and handed it to the officer.

“This is the original guardianship agreement.””

Daniel looked at the paper.

His father's signature appeared at the bottom.

So did Vanessa's.

“What is this?””

Richard swallowed.

“Vanessa wanted control of Noah's inheritance.””

Daniel looked up.

“Noah has an inheritance?””

“His mother left him a trust. It became accessible when he turned eighteen, but the money was protected by a separate guardianship arrangement until then.””

“How much?””

Richard looked away.

“Approximately twelve million dollars.””

Daniel stared at him.

“And you knew she was trying to get it?””

Richard nodded.

“I found out she had been moving money through several accounts.””

“Then why didn't you go to the police?””

Richard's eyes filled.

“Because I signed the first document.””

Daniel took a step backward.

“What?””

Richard pulled another paper from the folder.

“I agreed to temporary guardianship because Vanessa convinced me Noah would be safer with her.””

Officer Miller examined the document.

Richard continued.

“She told me she had arranged a private educational program for him. I believed her.””

“And when did you realize what she'd done?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“The night Noah disappeared.””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“You knew he was alive?””

Richard nodded.

“I came here. I found him in that room.””

“Then why didn't you take him home?””

Richard's expression collapsed.

“Because Vanessa showed me a recording.””

“What recording?””

Richard reached into the folder and removed a small memory card.

“Something that could destroy this entire family.””

Daniel stared at it.

Officer Miller took the card.

“What's on this?””

Richard looked directly at his son.

“Your mother's voice.””

Daniel frowned.

“My mother?””

Richard nodded.

“She knew Noah was here. She knew what Vanessa was doing.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That's impossible.””

Richard's voice broke.

“I wish it were.””

He took a breath.

“Evelyn wasn't the only person Vanessa threatened. Your mother signed a document agreeing to keep Noah's location secret.””

Daniel felt the room tilt.

“My mother would never do that.””

Richard looked at him with exhausted eyes.

“Then you need to hear the recording.””

The officer placed the memory card inside an evidence envelope.

Before he could say anything, Daniel's phone rang.

The caller ID showed Evelyn.

He answered immediately.

“Mom?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Daniel, you need to come back upstairs.””

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Vanessa just told Noah something.””

Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“She told him his father is alive.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard had gone completely pale.

May you like

Because Noah's father, Michael Bennett, had died in a car accident six months before the boy disappeared.

Or at least, that was what the family had been told.
