Chapter 3: The Camera Inside Buttons
The first police officer arrived at the ballroom at 9:47 p.m.
The second arrived three minutes later.
By then, the music had stopped, the guests had been asked to remain inside, and Vanessa had abandoned her champagne glass on a nearby table.
She was furious.
“This is a private family celebration,” she told the officers.
“You cannot simply walk in here because a child has made an imaginary accusation.””
Officer James Miller remained calm.
“Ma'am, we received a report concerning a missing child and a possible assault.””
Vanessa laughed.
“An assault? Are you serious?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“My niece says she saw a woman push a child down the stairs.””
Vanessa spun around.
“You are encouraging this?””
“I'm telling the police what she said.””
“You're destroying this family over a child's fantasy!””
Evelyn placed a protective hand on Amara's shoulder.
“Then you shouldn't have anything to fear from an investigation.””
Vanessa stared at her.
For a moment, the two women stood facing each other beneath the enormous chandelier.
One wore a metallic silver gown.
The other wore a simple black dress with a pearl necklace.
Both had spent decades learning how to hide their emotions.
But Evelyn had something Vanessa didn't.
She had nothing left to protect except her family.
Officer Miller turned toward Amara.
“Sweetheart, can I ask you a few questions?””
Amara nodded.
“What's your name?””
“Amara Bennett.””
“Can you tell me what happened?””
The little girl looked down at Buttons.
Then she glanced at Vanessa.
Evelyn knelt beside her.
“You can tell him, baby. Nobody is going to punish you for telling the truth.””
Amara took a deep breath.
“I was looking for the bathroom upstairs.””
Officer Miller nodded.
“Okay.””
“I heard somebody crying.””
“Who was crying?””
“The little boy.””
“Did you know him?””
Amara nodded.
“His name is Noah.””
The officer exchanged a quick glance with Daniel.
“Where did you see him?””
“Near the big stairs. He was holding the railing.””
Amara's voice became quieter.
“Then Aunt Vanessa came out of a room.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“That never happened.””
Officer Miller raised one hand.
“Please allow her to finish.””
Amara continued.
“She told Noah he couldn't tell anybody what he saw. He said he wanted to go home.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“What happened next?”” the officer asked.
Amara hugged Buttons tighter.
“Vanessa grabbed his arm. He tried to get away.””
“Then?””
“She pushed him.””
A woman near the doorway began crying.
Vanessa shook her head.
“This is outrageous.””
Amara's eyes filled with tears.
“He fell down the stairs.””
Nobody spoke.
The little girl looked at the floor.
“I wanted to help him, but Aunt Vanessa saw me.””
Officer Miller crouched slightly.
“Did she say anything to you?””
Amara nodded.
“She told me that if I told Grandma, she would make sure Uncle Daniel went away forever.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“What?””
Amara looked at him.
“I'm sorry.””
He immediately knelt beside her.
“Don't apologize, sweetheart. You didn't do anything wrong.””
Officer Miller stood.
“Ma'am, I'd like you to remain here while we clarify a few things.””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“Absolutely not. My attorney will be hearing about this.””
“That's your right.””
She reached into her handbag.
Then she stopped.
Her eyes had returned to the teddy bear.
Buttons.
The tiny camera.
“What's that?”” she asked.
Amara instinctively pulled the bear closer.
“My teddy.””
“I can see that. What's attached to it?””
“A camera.””
Vanessa's face became unreadable.
“Who gave you that?””
“Uncle Daniel.””
Daniel looked at the camera.
He had bought Amara the teddy bear at a Christmas market. It had never contained recording equipment.
At least, he hadn't thought it did.
Officer Miller extended his hand.
“Amara, would you mind letting us examine it?””
The little girl looked at Evelyn.
Her grandmother nodded.
“Only if you're comfortable, baby.””
Amara carefully handed the bear to the officer.
He turned it over.
The camera was remarkably small, hidden beneath a decorative button. A tiny indicator light blinked once.
Officer Miller examined the attachment.
“This looks like a wireless recording device.””
Daniel frowned.
“Can you retrieve the footage?””
“We'll need to preserve it properly.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“That's enough. You're not taking a child's toy.””
Officer Miller looked at her.
“Ma'am, please step back.””
“It's private property!””
“Then you can discuss that with your attorney.””
Vanessa turned toward Evelyn.
“You are allowing strangers to frighten your granddaughter over something she doesn't understand?””
Evelyn didn't move.
“You frightened her long before tonight.””
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.””
“Then explain why you're so desperate to keep us from seeing what's on that camera.””
Vanessa looked toward the exit.
Daniel noticed.
“Officer, she was trying to leave before you arrived.””
“I wasn't leaving,” Vanessa snapped.
“I was getting some air.””
“Then you won't mind waiting.””
Officer Miller placed the teddy bear inside a protective evidence bag.
As he did, a faint electronic sound came from the device.
A recording notification.
He looked down.
“Interesting.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What?””
“This device appears to have stored several video files.””
Vanessa's fingers tightened around her clutch.
“How many?””
Officer Miller glanced at her.
“Why do you ask?””
“I don't.””
But she had asked.
And everyone had heard it.
A technician from the hotel security office arrived shortly afterward carrying a laptop.
He connected the device through a secure adapter.
The first file appeared.
Then another.
Then a third.
Daniel leaned over his shoulder.
“Can you open the latest one?””
The technician nodded.
The screen displayed a timestamp from earlier that evening.
The image was slightly tilted, showing the hotel corridor from the height of a child's chest.
A small figure entered the frame.
Noah.
He looked thinner than Daniel remembered, but unmistakably alive.
“That's him,” Daniel whispered.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“Oh, my God.””
On the recording, Noah looked over his shoulder.
Then Vanessa appeared.
She was wearing a cream-colored blouse and black trousers, not the silver gown she wore tonight.
The woman in the video grabbed Noah's wrist.
The little boy tried to pull away.
The recording caught Vanessa's voice.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Noah cried.
“I didn't tell anybody!””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You think your grandmother can protect you?””
The image shook as the camera moved.
Then Noah stumbled backward.
A loud thud echoed through the recording.
The screen went dark.
Amara began crying again.
Evelyn pulled her close.
“That's enough, sweetheart. You don't have to watch anymore.””
Daniel stared at the frozen screen.
His hands were shaking.
The technician paused the video.
Officer Miller leaned toward the laptop.
“Can we determine where this was recorded?””
The technician examined the file details.
“It's from inside this hotel, but the timestamp is from six months ago.””
Daniel turned.
“Six months?””
He looked at the teddy bear.
Then at Amara.
“Sweetheart, when did you first find this camera?””
Amara wiped her cheek.
“Yesterday.””
“Where?””
“In the little room upstairs.””
Daniel frowned.
“What little room?””
“The room with the blue door.””
Vanessa's face went completely white.
Officer Miller noticed.
“Mrs. Whitmore, do you know which room she's talking about?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Evelyn slowly stood.
“Daniel, where is that room?””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“I don't know.””
The hotel manager approached them, visibly nervous.
“Mr. Bennett, there is something you should know.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
The manager glanced at Vanessa.
Then at the police officers.
“There's no room with a blue door on the second floor.””
Amara shook her head.
“Yes, there is.””
The manager swallowed.
“Sweetheart, the second floor only has storage rooms and private offices.””
Amara's voice became barely audible.
“But I saw Noah go inside.””
Daniel crouched.
“Can you show me?””
She nodded.
Officer Miller motioned to his colleague.
“Let's check the second floor.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“You cannot go up there.””
The officer turned.
“Why not?””
“Because those rooms are restricted.””
“Then you can explain that to us upstairs.””
The group moved toward the staircase.
Amara held Evelyn's hand with one hand and Buttons with the other.
As they reached the second-floor landing, she stopped.
“It's there.””
She pointed toward a narrow corridor behind a decorative wooden screen.
The manager stared.
“That area isn't part of the hotel guest facilities.””
Daniel pushed the screen aside.
Behind it stood a blue door.
A small brass lock was attached to the handle.
Officer Miller knocked.
“Police. Open the door.””
Nothing.
He knocked again.
“Police. We need you to open this door.””
From inside came a faint sound.
Three slow knocks.
Then a child's voice.
“Please don't let her take me.””
Evelyn's knees nearly buckled.
Daniel grabbed the door handle.
“NOAH!””
A frightened voice answered.
“Uncle Daniel?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
For two years, he had imagined this moment in a thousand different ways.
He had imagined finding a grave.
He had imagined finding evidence.
He had imagined being told that his nephew was gone forever.
He had never imagined hearing the little boy answer him.
“I'm here, buddy,” Daniel said, his voice breaking.
“I'm right outside.””
Then another voice came from behind them.
Vanessa.
Cold.
Controlled.
And dangerously quiet.
“Don't open that door.””
Everyone turned.
She was standing at the end of the corridor.
Her face was pale, but her eyes were fixed on Amara.
And in her hand was a small silver key.
Evelyn stepped in front of her granddaughter.
“Vanessa,” she said slowly, “what have you done?””
Vanessa looked at the locked blue door.
Then she looked directly at Daniel.
May you like
“You have no idea what's waiting on the other side.””
*And before Officer Miller could reach her, the door began opening from the inside.*
