Chapter 4: The Boy Behind the Blue Door

The door opened three inches.

Then stopped.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stood directly in front of it, his hand gripping the brass handle so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

“Uncle Daniel?””

The voice came again.

Small. Fragile. Familiar.

Daniel swallowed.

“It's me, buddy. It's Daniel.””

A shadow appeared beneath the narrow opening.

Then a little hand slipped through.

Evelyn made a sound that was half sob, half gasp.

“Noah…”

The door suddenly opened wider.

A thin boy stood on the other side.

He was wearing an oversized blue sweater, gray sweatpants, and mismatched socks. His dark hair hung over his forehead, and his cheeks looked hollow beneath his eyes.

But there was no mistaking him.

It was Noah Bennett.

The boy who had supposedly drowned two years earlier.

The boy whose funeral the family had attended without a body.

The boy Evelyn had cried herself to sleep over for hundreds of nights.

He stared at Daniel.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Noah whispered, “You came.””

Daniel dropped to his knees.

“Oh, buddy.””

Noah hesitated before stepping forward.

Daniel opened his arms.

The boy ran into them.

Daniel wrapped both arms around him, burying his face in the child's shoulder.

“I thought I lost you,” he whispered.

“I thought I lost you.””

Noah began crying.

“I tried to come home.””

Evelyn pressed one hand against the wall.

Her legs were trembling.

“Let me see him,” she whispered.

Daniel gently turned.

Noah looked up.

“Grandma Evelyn?””

Evelyn approached slowly, as though she were afraid the boy might disappear if she moved too quickly.

“Oh, my baby.””

She touched his cheek.

Then his hair.

Then his small shoulders.

“It's really you.””

Noah nodded.

Evelyn pulled him into her arms.

For a moment, the corridor filled with the sounds of a family reunion nobody had believed was possible.

But the moment didn't last.

Officer Miller stepped forward.

“Let's get this child somewhere safe. We need medical assistance immediately.””

Noah grabbed Daniel's sleeve.

“Don't let her come near me.””

Daniel looked down.

“Who, buddy?””

Noah pointed toward Vanessa.

She was still standing at the end of the corridor, holding the silver key.

“I told you,” Noah whispered.

“She always comes back.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is insane.””

Officer Miller turned toward her.

“Put the key on the floor, ma'am.””

Vanessa didn't move.

“I'm not holding anyone hostage.””

“Then cooperate.””

She looked at Daniel.

“You have no idea what this child is capable of.””

Daniel stood.

“Stop talking about him like he's the problem.””

“He lies!””

Noah flinched.

Daniel immediately moved in front of him.

“Don't you dare.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“You don't know what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

“I was protecting this family!””

Evelyn stared at her.

“By pretending a little boy was dead?””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“He was supposed to stay out of things that didn't concern him.””

Daniel looked toward the officers.

“Did you hear that?””

Officer Miller nodded.

“Ma'am, I need you to put the key down.””

Vanessa finally released it.

The key struck the carpet.

An officer moved toward her while another secured the corridor.

The hotel manager was standing near the staircase, looking as though he might faint.

Daniel turned back to Noah.

“Buddy, can you tell me why you were locked in here?””

Noah looked at the floor.

“She said I had to stay until everyone forgot.””

“Forgot what?””

The boy hesitated.

Then he looked at Amara.

“She saw me.””

Amara stepped closer.

“I told you I wouldn't forget.””

Noah's eyes filled with tears.

“You weren't supposed to come back.””

“I brought Buttons.””

She lifted the teddy bear.

Noah stared at the camera.

For the first time, he seemed to understand what had happened.

“You recorded it?””

Amara nodded.

“Everything.””

Noah looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa suddenly raised her voice.

“That's enough!””

Officer Miller stepped between her and the children.

“Ma'am, you're finished speaking to them.””

But Noah wasn't finished.

He reached into the pocket of his oversized sweater and pulled out a folded photograph.

It was old, with a crease running through the middle.

He handed it to Daniel.

The picture showed Noah standing beside a staircase.

Beside him was Richard Bennett, Daniel's father.

And behind them stood Vanessa.

On the back, someone had written a date.

October 14.

The day Noah disappeared.

Daniel stared at it.

“Where did you get this?””

“Daddy gave it to me.””

Daniel's heart seemed to stop.

“Your father?””

Noah nodded.

“He told me to keep it safe.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Mom, Richard said he never saw Noah after the accident.””

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“Richard told us he was in Boston that week.””

Noah shook his head.

“Grandpa was here.””

Daniel looked back at him.

“Here? At this hotel?””

Noah nodded.

“He came to the blue room.””

“Was he with Vanessa?””

Noah looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer changed everything.

Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“You told us Richard was out of town.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“You told us Noah wandered away from the lake.””

Still nothing.

“You told my family he was dead.””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Then she said something nobody expected.

“Richard knew exactly where he was.””

Evelyn stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa looked toward the police.

“You should ask Richard what happened that night.””

Daniel felt a chill move through him.

“Where is my father?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

It wasn't a happy smile.

It was the smile of someone who believed she had finally found a way out.

“He's on his way here.””

Daniel looked at his phone.

There were three missed calls from his father.

The last message had arrived only moments earlier.

*Daniel, don't let anyone show you the original recording.*

He looked up.

Vanessa was watching him.

May you like

And for the first time that evening, she looked almost relieved.

Because whatever had happened to Noah two years earlier, Vanessa wasn't the only adult who had been hiding the truth.
