Chapter 7: The Man Wearing Michael's Face

“That's not my father. That's the man who took him.””

Noah's words stopped everyone in the corridor.

Daniel turned toward his nephew.

“Buddy, look at me. Are you sure?””

Noah nodded frantically.

“That's him. He came to the blue room. He wore Daddy's jacket, but he wasn't Daddy.””

Richard grabbed the wall.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

And Officer Miller immediately reached for his radio.

“Unit at the main entrance, do not approach the individual. Keep him in sight. We have a possible impersonation and an unidentified child.””

Daniel stared at the elevator doors.

A man who looked like his dead brother was standing downstairs.

A little girl who looked like Amara was standing beside him.

And Noah was terrified.

None of it made sense.

“Mom,” Daniel said, “take the children into the suite.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Come on, babies.””

But Noah refused to move.

“I want to see him.””

Daniel crouched.

“Are you sure?””

Noah wiped his cheeks.

“I need to tell you something.””

“What is it?””

“The man downstairs knows where Daddy is.””

Daniel looked at Officer Miller.

The officer nodded toward the elevator.

“I'm going down. You stay with the children.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I'm coming with you.””

“Mr. Bennett, I need you to understand that we don't know who we're dealing with.””

“That's my family.””

“And that's exactly why you need to let us handle this.””

Before Daniel could respond, the elevator doors opened.

Two officers stepped out.

Between them stood a man in a dark baseball cap.

He was tall, with a narrow face and a small scar near his left eyebrow.

He looked almost exactly like Michael.

Beside him stood a little girl wearing a rainbow princess dress.

Her hair was braided with white beads.

She was holding a brown teddy bear.

Daniel felt his breath catch.

The child looked so much like Amara that, for one disorienting second, he thought he was looking at a reflection.

But Amara was standing behind Evelyn.

The stranger girl looked at her.

Then she whispered something.

“She's wearing my dress.””

Amara stepped forward.

“No, I'm wearing my dress.””

The little girl hugged her teddy bear.

“Mommy said you stole it.””

Daniel looked toward the man.

“Who are you?””

The man removed his cap.

“My name is Michael Bennett.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You're not Michael.””

The stranger smiled sadly.

“Hello, Richard.””

“Don't you dare.””

The man looked at Noah.

“Hello, buddy.””

Noah immediately hid behind Daniel.

“That's not my dad!””

The stranger's expression hardened.

“Enough of this.””

Officer Miller stepped between them.

“Sir, I need identification.””

The man reached into his jacket.

Both officers raised their hands.

“Slowly.””

He removed a wallet and handed it over.

The identification showed the name Michael Bennett.

The photograph was identical to the face standing before them.

Officer Miller examined it.

“This doesn't establish that you're the person you claim to be.””

The man sighed.

“I expected this.””

He reached into his jacket again.

This time, he removed a photograph.

It showed Michael and Daniel as teenagers, standing beside the old oak tree at the Bennett estate.

Daniel recognized the picture immediately.

He had never seen another copy.

“Where did you get that?””

The man looked at him.

“Because I was there.””

Richard shook his head.

“Michael would know something only he and I knew.””

The stranger nodded.

“Ask me.””

Richard stepped closer.

“What did your mother say the night she found us stealing apples from Mr. Harris's orchard?””

The man smiled.

“She said, ‘If you're going to steal, at least bring enough for your brother.’”

Richard's eyes filled.

It was true.

Only Michael could have known that.

Daniel looked between them.

“Then why does Noah say you're not his father?””

The man turned toward the boy.

“Because he hasn't seen me in a long time.””

Noah shook his head.

“You're lying.””

Michael's face tightened.

“I'm not.””

“You had a scar on your hand!””

The man glanced down.

No scar.

Noah continued.

“My daddy had a little white scar on his thumb from the kitchen knife. You don't have it.””

Daniel looked at the man's hands.

The boy was right.

The stranger's thumbs were smooth.

Richard stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at Noah.

Then he gave a small sigh.

“My name is Marcus Whitmore.””

Vanessa's name echoed through the corridor as Officer Miller called for an update.

Daniel froze.

“Whitmore?””

Marcus nodded.

“Vanessa's younger brother.””

Evelyn took a step backward.

“Then why do you look like Michael?””

Marcus slowly removed his jacket.

Beneath it, he wore a dark shirt with a small medical identification bracelet.

“I had reconstructive surgery after an accident. Vanessa paid for it. She wanted me to become someone else.””

Daniel stared.

“Become Michael?””

Marcus nodded.

“She needed someone to convince the family that Michael had returned and was taking Noah away voluntarily.””

Richard's face twisted with anger.

“You were supposed to be my son?””

“I was supposed to be a distraction.””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

“She told me that once the family believed Michael had returned, nobody would question why Noah disappeared again.””

Officer Miller immediately turned.

“Where is the real Michael Bennett?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he reached into his pocket and removed a small key.

“Under the old oak tree.””

Daniel stared at it.

“The estate?””

Marcus nodded.

“He's been there.””

Richard grabbed his arm.

“Alive?””

Marcus looked directly at him.

“Yes.””

Evelyn began crying.

Daniel felt his knees weaken.

“Why didn't he come home?””

Marcus looked at Noah.

“Because he knew Vanessa had someone inside the family helping her.””

Silence.

Richard slowly released Marcus's arm.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward Evelyn.

Then toward Daniel.

Finally, he pointed at the envelope in Daniel's hand.

“Read the letter.””

Daniel unfolded it again.

The first lines were written in Evelyn's familiar handwriting.

Daniel, if you're reading this, it means Vanessa has finally lost control.

He continued.

I discovered that the trust money was being transferred through accounts connected to the Whitmore family. I confronted Richard. He told me he was handling it.

Daniel looked at his father.

Richard lowered his eyes.

The letter continued.

But I found something worse. Someone in our family gave Vanessa access to Michael's private records. Someone knew about the accident before the police arrived.

Daniel's fingers trembled.

He turned the page.

There was another paragraph.

I was threatened. They told me that if I spoke, Noah would never come home. I agreed to keep quiet because I believed it was the only way to protect him.

Daniel stopped reading.

“Mom, who threatened you?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

Marcus answered before she could.

“Richard.””

Richard's head snapped up.

“That's a lie!””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You signed the papers. You handed Vanessa the account information. You helped arrange the disappearance.””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Son, listen to me.””

Daniel took a step back.

“Did you know Noah was alive?””

Richard didn't answer.

“Did you know where he was?””

Richard's eyes filled.

“Yes.””

Daniel stared at him.

“How long?””

“Two years.””

A terrible silence followed.

Daniel felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

“You knew.””

Richard nodded.

“And you let me bury my brother.””

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You let Mom cry over an empty coffin.””

“I was trying to protect—”

“You let a child grow up thinking his entire family had abandoned him!””

Richard began crying.

“I know.””

Daniel turned away.

Then Noah stepped forward.

He looked at Richard with an expression no child should ever have to wear.

“Grandpa?””

Richard dropped to his knees.

“Yes, buddy?””

“Did you know I was in that room?””

Richard nodded.

Noah's lower lip trembled.

“Why didn't you come get me?””

Richard couldn't answer.

Noah slowly backed away.

Evelyn pulled him close.

Officer Miller signaled to the other officers.

“Mr. Bennett, I need you to come with us.””

Richard didn't resist.

As they escorted him away, Marcus looked toward Daniel.

“There is one more thing.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“The man under the oak tree isn't alone.””

He looked at the little girl.

“She knows where the original ledger is.””

The girl finally spoke.

“My mommy told me to give this to Uncle Daniel.””

She opened her teddy bear's little pocket.

Inside was a folded photograph.

Daniel unfolded it.

The picture showed Michael standing beside a woman in a hospital room.

A newborn baby lay in her arms.

On the back, someone had written:

*MICHAEL'S SECOND CHILD. BORN AFTER HE DISAPPEARED.*

Daniel looked at the little girl.

Then at Amara.

And suddenly understood why Vanessa had gone to such extraordinary lengths to keep the children apart.

There were two children.

May you like

Two heirs.

And one missing ledger that could destroy everything.
