Chapter 8: Beneath the Old Oak Tree

The Bennett estate looked different after midnight.

The mansion stood beneath a dark sky, its tall windows reflecting the headlights of the police vehicles parked along the driveway.

Daniel hadn't been back since the family funeral two years earlier.

He remembered the white flowers.

The black suits.

His mother's trembling hands.

And the empty coffin that had been lowered into the ground.

Now he was returning with a police escort to find the brother he had mourned.

Evelyn sat in the back seat with Amara and Noah.

The little girl who had arrived with Marcus was named Lily.

She sat beside Amara, holding her teddy bear.

For the first twenty minutes, neither child spoke.

Then Amara leaned toward her.

“Do you know Noah?””

Lily nodded.

“He's my brother.””

Noah looked up.

“You're Lily?””

She smiled.

“Daddy told me about you.””

Noah stared at her.

“I didn't know I had a sister.””

Lily lowered her eyes.

“Mommy said you went away.””

Noah looked toward the window.

“She lied.””

Lily nodded.

“I know.””

Evelyn reached across the seat and gently held both children's hands.

“None of this was your fault.””

Daniel watched them in the rearview mirror.

He couldn't stop thinking about the photograph.

Michael had another child.

A daughter.

A little girl who had apparently been raised under Vanessa's control while Noah was hidden away.

How many lies could one family contain?

When they arrived, Officer Miller ordered everyone to remain near the vehicles while officers secured the property.

Daniel stepped onto the driveway.

The old oak tree stood beyond the east garden.

Its branches stretched over the lawn like enormous arms.

He remembered climbing it with Michael when they were boys.

He remembered carving their initials into the trunk.

And he remembered the promise they had made.

No matter what happens, we never leave each other behind.

Daniel walked toward it.

An officer followed.

“Mr. Bennett, stay behind me.””

Daniel nodded.

The grass was wet beneath his shoes.

A faint light flickered near the roots.

Then someone stepped out from behind the tree.

A man.

Thin.

Unshaven.

Wearing an old brown coat.

Daniel stopped breathing.

The man looked up.

Their eyes met.

“Danny?””

The voice was unmistakable.

Daniel's knees nearly gave way.

“Michael?””

His brother stepped forward.

For a moment, they simply stared at each other.

Then Daniel ran.

The two men collided beneath the oak tree.

Daniel wrapped his arms around his brother.

“You're alive.””

Michael buried his face against Daniel's shoulder.

“I'm sorry.””

Daniel began crying.

“You're alive.””

“I know.””

“You're really alive.””

Michael nodded.

Daniel pulled away just enough to look at his face.

“You let us think you were dead.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“I had no choice.””

“You always had a choice!””

“I thought Vanessa would kill Noah.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“And what about the rest of us?””

Michael had no answer.

Then Evelyn approached.

She had been walking slowly, one hand holding Noah's.

When Michael saw her, his face crumpled.

“Mom.””

Evelyn stopped.

For two years, she had imagined hearing that word again.

She had imagined hugging her son.

She had imagined asking him why he had left.

But when the moment finally arrived, she couldn't move.

Michael took a step toward her.

“Mom, I'm sorry.””

Evelyn slapped a hand over her mouth.

Then she reached for him.

She held his face between her palms.

“My son.””

Michael began crying.

Evelyn pulled him into her arms.

“I buried you.””

“I know.””

“I stood beside an empty coffin.””

“I know.””

“I thought I'd lost both my boys.””

Michael bowed his head.

“I'm sorry.””

She held him tighter.

Then Noah approached.

“Daddy?””

Michael immediately turned.

His son stood several feet away.

For a moment, Michael couldn't speak.

He dropped to his knees.

“Hey, buddy.””

Noah didn't move.

Michael opened his arms.

“Come here.””

The boy stared at him.

“Are you really my daddy?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

Noah looked toward Daniel.

Then toward Evelyn.

Finally, he ran.

Michael caught him.

The two held each other beneath the old oak tree while Lily watched from behind Amara.

“Daddy,” Noah whispered, “I thought you forgot me.””

Michael pressed his forehead against his son's.

“Never. Not one day.””

“Then why didn't you come?””

Michael's eyes filled.

“I was trying to find a way to bring you home without putting you in danger.””

Noah pulled away.

“But I was already in danger.””

Michael had no answer.

Lily approached.

“Daddy?””

Michael looked up.

His face changed completely.

“Lily?””

The little girl nodded.

He opened one arm.

She ran into it.

For the first time in two years, both his children were in his arms.

Daniel watched silently.

Then Officer Miller interrupted.

“Mr. Bennett, we need to speak with you about the ledger.””

Michael nodded.

He gently released the children.

“It's beneath the tree.””

He pointed toward a section of soil near the roots.

“Vanessa told me she would never find it here.””

An officer brought a small shovel.

After several minutes, the metal struck something hard.

They uncovered a waterproof metal box.

Inside were several documents, a flash drive, and a thick black ledger.

Michael took the ledger.

“This is everything.””

Daniel opened it.

Pages of account numbers and transfers filled the book.

Names appeared beside dates and amounts.

Several companies were listed.

Some belonged to the Whitmore family.

Others were connected to businesses Richard had managed.

Daniel turned another page.

Then another.

His face grew pale.

“Michael…”

“What?””

Daniel pointed toward a series of entries.

“Look at the dates.””

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

“These transfers continued after you supposedly died.””

Michael looked toward Officer Miller.

“That's why I couldn't come back.””

Officer Miller examined the pages.

“Who was moving the money?””

Michael pointed toward a name.

*BENNETT FAMILY FOUNDATION.*

Daniel frowned.

“That was Dad's charity.””

Michael nodded.

“But look at the account holder.””

Daniel read the name.

Then he looked up.

“Evelyn Bennett?””

His mother stepped forward.

“What?””

Daniel showed her.

Her name appeared beside a signature authorizing several transfers.

Evelyn shook her head.

“I never signed this.””

Michael took the document.

“It's forged.””

He pointed to a small mark near the bottom.

“Mom signs her B differently. Whoever made this copied her signature from an old document.””

Officer Miller photographed the page.

Then he examined the flash drive.

“What's on this?””

Michael looked toward Daniel.

“Recordings.””

“Of what?””

“Meetings between Vanessa and Richard.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Can we hear them?””

Michael nodded.

“They're the reason I stayed hidden.””

An officer connected the drive to a secure laptop.

The first recording began.

Vanessa's voice filled the night air.

“Once Noah is gone, nobody will question the trust transfers.””

Then Richard's voice answered.

“And Evelyn?””

Vanessa laughed.

“She'll sign whatever we put in front of her. She trusts her own family.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

The recording continued.

Then Vanessa said something that made Michael close his eyes.

“There's one more problem. Daniel.””

Richard asked, “What about him?””

Vanessa answered calmly.

“He's asking too many questions. If he discovers the truth, we'll need to make sure he never gets the chance to tell anyone.””

The recording ended.

Daniel stood motionless.

Officer Miller looked at Michael.

“Is there another recording?””

Michael nodded.

“One more.””

The officer opened it.

This time, the audio began with the sound of a door closing.

Then Richard spoke.

“Vanessa, I can't keep doing this.””

She answered.

“You already did.””

“I want Noah home.””

“You want your reputation intact.””

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then Richard said something that made Daniel's blood run cold.

“Michael knows about the accident.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Michael doesn't know anything.””

“He knows you arranged it.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa replied:

“Richard, if Michael ever comes back, I'll tell Daniel who really caused his mother's death.””

The recording stopped.

Evelyn staggered.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Mom?””

She was staring at the laptop.

Her lips trembled.

“That's why I signed the papers.””

Daniel felt his heart pounding.

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn looked at Michael.

Then at her grandchildren.

“I knew Vanessa had arranged the accident.””

Michael shook his head.

“Mom, no.””

Evelyn began crying.

“But I didn't know who was driving the car.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Whose car?””

Evelyn looked directly at him.

Then she whispered:

“The car that killed your mother wasn't driven by a stranger.””

She paused.

“It was driven by your father.””

Nobody moved.

May you like

And suddenly, the old oak tree no longer felt like the place where the family had buried its secrets.

It felt like the place where those secrets had finally come back to life.
