Chapter 10: The Money Behind the Silence

The hardest part about betrayal is not discovering the truth.

It is discovering that the truth was standing beside you the entire time.

I stared at the photograph on my phone until the screen went dark.

Warren.

Derrick.

Monica.

All three connected by a secret I didn’t understand.

All three connected by money.

The word from the message kept repeating in my head.

*Ask Warren about the money.*

Not Derrick.

Not Monica.

Warren.

My dad.

The person I had trusted with my entire life.

“Tell me,” I whispered.

Warren looked at me.

His face had changed.

Not because he was angry.

Because he knew this moment had finally arrived.

“Tiana…”

“No.””

I held up my hand.

“I’m done with people deciding when I’m ready for the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

“I want the whole story.””

Warren sat down slowly.

Derrick remained standing near the window.

For once, he wasn’t the center of attention.

Neither was I.

The truth was.

“Years ago,” Warren began, “when Derrick was struggling, I helped him.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You know part of it.””

My stomach tightened.

He continued.

“I didn’t just help him find treatment.””

I waited.

“I helped him financially.””

“How?””

“I paid off some of his debts.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he was your father.””

The answer was immediate.

Simple.

Almost painful.

“He was trying to get his life together,” Warren said.

“And I believed if he had a chance to rebuild, you might one day have the father you deserved.””

I looked at Derrick.

He looked ashamed.

“How much?””

Warren hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“How much, Dad?””

“Thirty-five thousand dollars.””

The room went silent.

Thirty-five thousand.

The same amount that felt impossible yesterday suddenly felt familiar.

“Where did the money come from?””

Warren looked down.

“From my savings.””

I swallowed.

“Your retirement?””

He nodded.

My chest tightened.

“You used your retirement money to help him?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because it wasn’t your burden.””

I stared at him.

“But now my wedding is your burden?””

His face fell.

The words hurt both of us.

I immediately regretted saying them.

But they came from somewhere real.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

Warren shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You’re angry. You have every right.””

Derrick finally spoke.

“I paid him back.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Derrick stepped forward.

“I paid him back.””

Warren’s expression changed.

“No, you didn’t.””

“Yes, I did.””

“When?””

“Last year.””

I looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Derrick pulled out his phone.

He opened his banking app.

“I sent the money.””

Warren stared.

Then shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Look.””

Derrick handed him the phone.

Warren read the screen.

His expression slowly changed.

Not relief.

Confusion.

Because something didn’t add up.

“What?””

He looked at Derrick.

“This account isn’t mine.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

Derrick looked confused.

“I sent it to the account you gave me.””

Warren looked at him.

“I never gave you an account.””

The silence that followed was terrifying.

I looked at the photograph again.

Monica.

The contracts.

The money.

The fake signatures.

Everything connected.

“Who gave you the account?””

Derrick went pale.

“Monica.””

Nobody moved.

“Monica told me Warren changed accounts.””

Warren looked at the photo.

“So she was moving money between us.””

Derrick nodded slowly.

“She said she was helping.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“So she manipulated both of you.””

Nobody answered.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Monica.

The first time I saw her name on my screen.

I opened it.

*I know you found out. We need to talk before you make a mistake.*

My hands went cold.

“She texted me.””

Warren looked up.

“What did she say?””

I showed him.

Derrick’s face changed.

“She knows.””

“Of course she knows.””

Warren stood.

“We need to find her.””

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I shook my head.

“I’m done chasing people who lie.””

“Tiana—”

“No.””

I looked at Derrick.

Then Warren.

“I want answers.””

I typed a response.

*Come to the venue. Now.*

Derrick frowned.

“Why there?””

“Because that’s where all of this started.””

The wedding.

The money.

The performance.

The lies.

Two hours later, I stood inside Evergreen Ridge Events.

The place was beautiful.

White flowers.

Glass windows.

Soft lighting.

A perfect place for promises.

A terrible place for secrets.

Melissa greeted us at the entrance.

“I’m glad you came.””

She looked nervous.

“I found something else.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She handed me a folder.

“This was attached to the original contract.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Not from Derrick.

Not from Monica.

From Warren.

I looked up.

“Why is your name on this?””

Warren went still.

“I don’t know.””

I read the first line.

My hands started shaking.

*If anything happens to me, Tiana should know the truth about who paid for her wedding.*

I looked at Warren.

“What is this?””

He looked terrified.

May you like

Because he knew exactly what it was.

And he knew I was about to discover the final secret he had been protecting.
