Chapter 11: The Father Who Paid The Price

I read the letter three times.

Not because I didn’t understand the words.

Because I didn’t want to.

Sometimes your mind fights the truth before your heart can accept it.

The letter was written six months earlier.

Before the wedding plans.

Before Derrick returned.

Before everything fell apart.

My name was at the top.

*Tiana.*

Not “my daughter.””

Not “to whom it may concern.””

Just my name.

Like Warren had been preparing for a moment he hoped would never come.

“Did you write this?””

I asked.

Warren didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“What does it mean?””

He took a breath.

“It means I knew there was a chance you would need to know.””

“Know what?””

He looked at the floor.

“The wedding was already paid for.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Melissa looked uncomfortable.

“I’m sorry. I thought she knew.””

I turned to her.

“Knew what?””

She opened the folder.

“The venue received full payment six weeks ago.””

I stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“But there’s still a balance.””

Melissa shook her head.

“There shouldn’t be.””

I looked at Warren.

He said nothing.

And slowly, painfully, I understood.

“You paid it.””

He nodded.

The room went quiet.

“You paid the $40,000?””

“Yes.””

My eyes filled.

“Then why did you show me the invoice?””

“Because I didn’t.””

I froze.

“What?””

Warren looked at Derrick.

“I paid the original amount.””

Derrick’s face changed.

“The invoice was altered.””

I looked at the paperwork.

The numbers.

The documents.

The fake responsibility forms.

Monica.

Someone had created a crisis that didn’t exist.

But why?

Melissa continued.

“We discovered the account changes after the cancellation request.””

She pointed at the paperwork.

“Someone was attempting to redirect the refund process.””

I felt sick.

“The refund?””

“Yes.””

The room became colder.

“They weren’t trying to cancel the wedding.””

Warren finished.

“They were trying to cancel it, receive the refund, and disappear.””

I looked at Derrick.

He looked destroyed.

“I didn’t know.””

I believed him.

That was the strange part.

After everything.

I believed him.

Because for the first time, he looked like a man who had been used.

Not a man controlling the situation.

“Where is Monica now?””

Melissa shook her head.

“We don’t know.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice.

“Tiana.””

My body went still.

Monica.

“You wanted answers.””

I walked away from the group.

“Yes.””

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“You should be angry at Warren.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he lied to you.””

I looked back.

Warren was standing there.

The man who raised me.

The man who paid for my wedding.

The man who hid things.

“What did he lie about?””

Monica laughed softly.

“You really don’t know.””

“Tell me.””

“He didn’t just pay for your wedding.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“He paid me.””

My stomach dropped.

“For what?””

Silence.

Then:

“To keep Derrick away.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Monica continued.

“You think Derrick just disappeared all those years?””

I looked at Warren.

He looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Monica’s voice became softer.

“Ask him why Derrick didn’t come back sooner.””

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

The room blurred.

Warren approached.

“What did she say?””

I looked at him.

“Did you pay Monica?””

His face changed.

Not fear.

Shock.

“No.””

“Did you pay her to keep Derrick away?””

The silence was immediate.

Too immediate.

My heart sank.

“Dad?””

Warren closed his eyes.

And that was when I knew.

There was another truth.

Another piece.

Another wound.

“I need you to understand.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Tiana.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You promised me.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

“You promised no more secrets.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

The man who had always protected me looked completely broken.

Finally, he whispered:

“I didn’t pay Monica to keep Derrick away.””

I waited.

“Then what?””

He looked at me.

“I paid her because Derrick asked me to.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

Derrick stepped forward.

“I never asked him to do that.””

Warren looked at him.

“You did.””

“No.””

“You don’t remember.””

The two men stared at each other.

And suddenly I realized something.

This story wasn’t about one person lying.

It was about years of people making choices they thought were justified.

Choices that hurt everyone.

Warren took a shaky breath.

“Derrick came to me.””

“When?””

“Seven years ago.””

I stared.

“Seven years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Warren looked at Derrick.

“Because he was afraid.””

Derrick’s face went pale.

“Don’t.””

But Warren continued.

“He was afraid he would fail her again.””

My eyes moved to Derrick.

“What did you ask him?””

Derrick looked away.

Nothing.

Warren answered.

“He asked me to keep him away until he could become someone worthy of you.””

I felt my anger shift.

Not disappear.

Shift.

Because suddenly the story was different.

Derrick didn’t simply abandon me.

Warren didn’t simply steal him away.

They had both made decisions about my life without asking me.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Monica.

One final line.

*You deserve to know why Derrick really came back.*

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

Derrick standing outside my wedding venue.

Talking to someone.

Someone I recognized.

My fiancé.

I dropped the phone.

May you like

Because the biggest secret wasn’t about my fathers.

It was about the man I was supposed to marry.
