Chapter 4: The Announcement He Never Told Me About

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was worried about the wedding.

Not because of the $40,000 bill.

Not even because of the possibility that everything I planned for a year could disappear before sunrise.

I couldn’t sleep because one sentence kept replaying in my head.

There’s something important I’m going to announce during the ceremony.

Derrick’s message sat on my phone screen like a threat disguised as affection.

I had spent my entire life imagining what it would feel like to have my biological father back.

I imagined him apologizing.

I imagined him admitting he was wrong.

I imagined him saying the words I had secretly wanted to hear since I was a little girl.

“I should have been there.””

But I never imagined this.

I never imagined finding out he had been preparing a moment at my wedding without telling me.

The next morning, my apartment looked nothing like the beginning of a dream.

My wedding dress hung near the bedroom window, covered in plastic.

My shoes sat perfectly aligned beside the closet.

My bouquet was supposed to arrive in three hours.

Everything was ready.

Except me.

I sat on the edge of my bed holding my phone.

Seven missed calls.

Four from my mother.

Three from Derrick.

None from Warren.

That hurt more than I expected.

Because Warren was always the person who called.

When I got my first apartment.

When I graduated.

When I got engaged.

When I cried after my first serious breakup.

He was the person who showed up before I even asked.

But now he was silent.

A knock came at my door.

I knew who it was before opening it.

“Dad?””

Warren stood outside.

He wore a simple gray button-down shirt and dark jeans.

No suit.

No smile.

Just tired eyes.

“I didn’t know if you wanted to see me.””

The fact that he said that broke something inside me.

I stepped aside.

“Come in.””

He walked slowly into the apartment.

His eyes immediately went to the wedding dress.

For a moment, he smiled.

A real smile.

“You look beautiful in that.””

I looked away.

“You haven’t even seen me wearing it.””

“I don’t need to.””

That was such a Warren thing to say.

Simple.

Certain.

The kind of thing that used to make me feel safe.

I crossed my arms.

“Why didn’t you call me?””

He looked down.

“Because I thought you needed space.””

“I needed the truth.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer was too easy.

It made me angry.

“How long were you going to wait?””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“After the wedding?””

His silence answered.

I laughed quietly.

“Wow.””

“Tiana—”

“No, seriously. You both were going to let me stand there tomorrow and smile while everyone watched me marry someone knowing my own father was lying to me?””

Warren’s expression tightened.

“I wasn’t going to let that happen.””

“But you almost did.””

He had no response.

And that was worse.

I walked to the kitchen and poured myself water.

My hands were still shaking.

“I need to know everything.””

Warren nodded.

“Okay.””

“No more protecting me.””

“Okay.””

“No more deciding what I can handle.””

His eyes softened.

“Okay.””

I turned around.

“What was Derrick planning to announce?””

Warren stayed quiet for several seconds.

Then he reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

“I found this yesterday.””

He opened an email.

The screen faced me.

I read it.

The sender was Derrick.

The recipient was a local wedding photographer.

My stomach tightened.

“What is this?””

Warren swallowed.

“Read the second paragraph.””

I did.

The words blurred.

During the ceremony, I’d like to capture the moment when I surprise Tiana by announcing that I’m establishing a scholarship fund in her name…

I looked up.

“A scholarship?””

Warren nodded.

I continued.

The next sentence made my face go cold.

I want everyone there to know I’ve spent years preparing something meaningful for my daughter.

I stared at the phone.

“Preparing?””

Warren took it back.

“He hasn’t prepared anything.””

“How do you know?””

“Because the photographer called me.””

“Why?””

“Because Derrick asked him to film the announcement.””

I felt sick.

“So he wanted a video.””

“Yes.””

“A public moment.””

“Yes.””

“But he didn’t pay for the wedding.””

“No.””

I sat down.

The pieces started connecting.

Not quickly.

Not dramatically.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“He wanted everyone to think he was the father who came back.””

Warren didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The silence was enough.

My phone rang.

Derrick.

This time, I answered.

Warren looked at me.

I pressed speaker.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

His voice sounded warm.

Almost too warm.

“Hi.””

“You okay?””

I looked at Warren.

“I’m fine.””

A pause.

“You sound upset.””

“I have questions.””

Another pause.

“What kind of questions?””

“The kind you should have answered before today.””

The warmth disappeared.

“What did Warren tell you?””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Not concern.

Not confusion.

The first thing he wanted to know was what Warren had said.

“You knew about the unpaid balance.””

Silence.

“Derrick?””

“I was handling it.””

“No, you weren’t.””

“I was trying to.””

“You signed paperwork saying you would pay.””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

“Tiana, you don’t understand how complicated things are.””

I laughed.

Quietly.

“Complicated?””

“Yes.””

“My wedding is tomorrow.””

“I know.””

“And you were planning an announcement.””

Silence.

That was the answer.

“You were, weren’t you?””

“Tiana…”

“You were going to stand in front of everyone and tell them you were this amazing father.””

“That’s not fair.””

“No?””

“No. I wanted to do something special.””

“Something special?””

My voice cracked.

“You couldn’t even pay the bill.””

He sighed.

“I knew Warren would make this about money.””

I looked at Warren.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

“You still don’t get it,” I whispered.

“Get what?””

“This was never about money.””

Derrick said nothing.

“It was about showing up.””

The line stayed quiet.

Then he said:

“I love you.””

Those words would have destroyed me a week ago.

Today, they felt empty.

“I don’t know if you love me,” I said.

The silence afterward was painful.

Because for once, Derrick had no perfect answer.

Finally, he whispered:

“I’ll see you tomorrow.””

Then he hung up.

I stared at the phone.

Warren sat across from me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

“It’s the venue.””

My heart dropped.

He picked up.

“Hello?””

He listened.

His expression became serious.

Then confused.

Then angry.

“What do you mean he changed the agreement?””

I stood.

Changed the agreement?

Warren looked at me.

And whatever he heard next made him grip the phone tighter.

Because Derrick hadn’t just failed to pay the wedding.

May you like

He had made another decision.

One that involved me.
