Chapter 12: The Groom’s Hidden Conversation
There are moments when your entire life changes without making a sound.
No explosion.
No warning.
No dramatic music.
Just a small image on a phone screen.
A photograph.
A person you love.
Standing somewhere they shouldn’t be.
Talking to someone they shouldn’t know.
I picked up my phone again.
The picture was still there.
My fiancé, Marcus.
Standing outside Evergreen Ridge Events.
Talking to Derrick.
Two weeks earlier.
I zoomed in.
It wasn’t a misunderstanding.
It wasn’t a coincidence.
They knew each other.
“How long?””
My voice barely came out.
Everyone looked at me.
Warren frowned.
“Tiana?””
I turned to Derrick.
“How long have you known Marcus?””
His face changed.
That was enough.
“Answer me.””
“Since before the engagement.””
The room went silent.
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Derrick looked ashamed.
“I met him before.””
“When?””
I laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“Before he proposed?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Derrick looked down.
“He found me.””
“Why would my fiancé find you?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Warren.
Then Derrick.
Then the photograph.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone.
Except me.
“Tell me.””
Derrick sighed.
“Marcus wanted to understand your family.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“He knew you had questions about your father.””
“So he contacted you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Derrick swallowed.
“Because he wanted to make sure I wouldn’t hurt you.””
For a moment, I almost believed that.
Almost.
Then I remembered everything.
The secrets.
The contracts.
The lies.
“Then why hide it?””
Derrick didn’t answer.
Warren did.
“Because Marcus asked us not to tell you.””
My stomach turned.
“Us?””
Warren looked down.
“Yes.””
I stared.
“You knew too?””
He nodded.
“I thought he was trying to protect you.””
I felt tears burn my eyes.
“Everyone keeps using that word.””
Protect.
“You all keep saying you’re protecting me.””
My voice shook.
“But every single time, I’m the last person to know.””
Nobody spoke.
I grabbed my phone.
I called Marcus.
He answered quickly.
“Hey, love.””
The normal sound of his voice almost broke me.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“At home.””
“Don’t lie.””
Silence.
That silence was enough.
“Tiana…”
“Were you at Evergreen Ridge two weeks ago?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
“With Derrick?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
He exhaled.
“I wanted answers.””
“About what?””
“About your past.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You wanted answers about my past without telling me?””
“I was trying to understand.””
“You were investigating me.””
“No.””
“Then what was it?””
He went quiet.
Finally:
“I was scared.””
The answer surprised me.
“Of what?””
“That you would always wonder about him.””
I looked at Derrick.
The man who had left.
The man who returned.
The man who wanted redemption.
“I wanted to know if he was real.””
“And?””
“He was.””
I swallowed.
“So why did you hide it?””
Marcus sighed.
“Because after meeting him, I found out something.””
“What?””
“He wasn’t the only person who had secrets.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Tiana, I think you need to ask your mother about the day your father left.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I’m sorry.””
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody moved.
My mother looked terrified.
And I knew.
Before anyone said a word.
She knew.
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
“No.””
“Tell me.””
“Tiana…”
“Tell me what happened the day he left.””
Her hands started shaking.
Warren looked at her.
“Denise…”
She looked at me.
And tears filled her eyes.
“The story you were told…”
She swallowed.
“Wasn’t the whole story.””
The room went silent.
“Then what happened?””
My mother looked at Derrick.
Then Warren.
Then me.
And whispered:
“Your father didn’t leave you.””
I stopped breathing.
“He was made to believe you didn’t want him.””
I stared.
“What?””
My mother covered her face.
“Someone sent him a letter.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then my mother looked directly at Warren.
May you like
And said the words I never expected to hear.
“Warren.””
