Chapter 2: The Call That Changed the Entire Resort

Victoria Hayes had spent eleven years building her reputation in the luxury hospitality industry.

She knew how to recognize wealthy guests.

She knew how to make investors feel important.

She knew how to turn an ordinary complaint into a public-relations emergency.

But she had never learned how to recognize a powerful man who had no interest in impressing her.

That morning, she was about to find out.

Inside the lobby, Naomi sat on a velvet bench near the reception desk.

Emily had quietly brought her a glass of water and a clean towel.

“I'm so sorry,” the receptionist whispered.

Naomi looked at her.

“Why are you apologizing?””

Emily glanced toward Victoria.

“Because nobody should have treated you like that.””

Naomi gently rocked Elijah.

“Thank you.””

“Do you want me to call security?””

Naomi almost laughed.

“Security?””

Emily nodded.

“Maybe they can help.””

Naomi looked at the two security guards standing near the entrance.

Neither had moved when Victoria slapped her.

One had actually looked away.

“No,” Naomi said softly.

“I think we have enough people here who have already decided not to help.””

Emily swallowed.

“I understand.””

“No, sweetheart. You don't have to be afraid to speak up.””

Emily looked down.

“You don't know Ms. Hayes.””

Naomi studied her face.

“Maybe that's the problem. Everybody knows her, so nobody challenges her.””

Across the lobby, Victoria was speaking into her phone.

“Get the front entrance cleared,” she ordered.

“I don't care if they have reservations. We cannot have this kind of disturbance in the lobby.””

Daniel approached.

“Ms. Hayes, the security supervisor wants to know whether we should contact the police.””

Victoria waved him away.

“For what?””

“She says you struck her.””

Victoria laughed.

“She fell.””

“Several guests saw—”

“Daniel.””

Victoria lowered her voice.

“Do you want to keep your job?””

He immediately stopped speaking.

“Understood.””

“Good. Now find out who this woman actually is.””

Daniel glanced toward Naomi.

“She said her name is Naomi Carter.””

Victoria checked her phone.

“Search her reservation profile. There must be something.””

Daniel returned to the computer.

A few moments later, his expression changed.

“Ms. Hayes?””

“What?””

“There's something unusual.””

Victoria walked over.

Daniel turned the monitor.

The reservation showed a prepaid executive booking.

But beneath the guest details was a second line.

<escape>VIP EXECUTIVE RELATIONSHIP — OWNER'S OFFICE APPROVAL.</escape>

Victoria stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel clicked the details.

A note appeared.

<escape>Guest: Naomi Carter. Personal guest of ownership. No additional identification required. All hospitality requests to be handled directly by executive guest services.</escape>

Victoria felt an uncomfortable sensation in her stomach.

“Why didn't anybody tell me?””

Daniel looked at the screen.

“It was in the reservation.””

“That's not what I asked.””

He said nothing.

Victoria glanced toward Naomi.

The young woman was still seated with her baby.

Her beige dress was wrinkled from the fall.

Her twists rested against her shoulders.

Her diaper bag sat beside her feet.

Victoria shook her head.

“Someone made a mistake.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Maybe we should wait for the owner.””

Victoria snapped the computer monitor shut.

“The owner is overseas.””

“He could be returning today.””

“He isn't.””

Then she walked toward Naomi.

“Ms. Carter?””

Naomi looked up.

Victoria forced a smile.

“There's been a misunderstanding.””

Naomi stared at her.

“A misunderstanding?””

“Yes. Perhaps we can discuss this privately.””

Naomi glanced at the guests.

“You had no problem discussing my reservation in front of everyone.””

Victoria's smile tightened.

“There's no need to make this more dramatic than it already is.””

“You slapped me.””

“I did not slap you.””

Naomi blinked.

“You're denying it?””

Victoria lowered her voice.

“You lost your balance.””

Naomi slowly touched her cheek.

“Interesting. So my face hit your hand?””

Daniel looked away.

A guest standing nearby quietly lowered his phone.

Victoria noticed.

“Sir, recording is prohibited in private guest areas.””

The guest raised an eyebrow.

“I'm standing in the public lobby.””

“I'm the manager. I decide what's permitted.””

He gave a small laugh.

“That's not how the law works.””

Victoria turned away.

Naomi watched her carefully.

“Why don't you just apologize?””

Victoria's jaw tightened.

“I'm trying to resolve this.””

“An apology would be a good start.””

“I am not going to apologize for enforcing resort standards.””

Naomi looked at her for several seconds.

Then she said something that made Daniel shift uncomfortably.

“You're going to wish you had.””

Victoria laughed.

“Is that a threat?””

“No. It's a warning.””

Outside, the convoy had stopped beneath the resort's covered entrance.

A uniformed driver opened the rear door of the first black SUV.

A tall Black man in his late fifties stepped out.

He wore a dark navy suit, a white shirt, and a simple silver watch.

His hair was closely cropped, with gray at the temples.

He didn't rush.

He didn't shout.

He simply looked toward the resort.

His name was Marcus Carter.

To the general public, Marcus was the founder of Carter Meridian Holdings, a private investment group with interests in luxury hospitality, commercial property, and international development.

To the business world, he was a billionaire investor known for buying struggling companies and rebuilding them.

But to Naomi, he was simply Dad.

A second man stepped out of the SUV.

His name was Richard Lawson, Marcus's personal attorney.

A third vehicle carried two members of the company's executive security team.

Marcus looked at his driver.

“Is my daughter inside?””

“Yes, sir.””

“Is the baby with her?””

“Yes, sir.””

Marcus nodded.

“Get the medical team ready.””

Richard opened a leather folder.

“I've already contacted the regional operations director.””

Marcus glanced at him.

“Did you tell him what happened?””

“I told him there was an alleged physical assault involving the owner's daughter and an infant.””

Marcus stopped walking.

“Alleged?””

Richard met his eyes.

“We need to establish the facts.””

Marcus looked through the glass.

He could see Naomi sitting near the reception desk.

He could also see the red mark on her cheek.

“Richard, I raised that girl. I know what her face looks like when she's been crying.””

Richard closed the folder.

“Understood.””

“Get the footage preserved. Every camera. Every angle. Nobody deletes anything.””

“I'll handle it.””

“And nobody touches that manager until I hear what happened.””

Richard nodded.

Marcus started toward the entrance.

Inside, Daniel's phone vibrated.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed immediately.

“Ms. Hayes.””

Victoria was typing something on her tablet.

“What now?””

“The regional operations director is calling.””

“Then answer.””

Daniel picked up.

“Good morning, Mr. Collins.””

A man's voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel, where is Ms. Carter?””

Daniel looked at Naomi.

“She is currently in the lobby.””

“Is she safe?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Has anyone touched her?””

Victoria snatched the phone.

“Mr. Collins, this is Victoria Hayes. We had a minor disagreement with a guest who refused to cooperate.””

The director's voice hardened.

“Victoria, I asked whether anyone touched her.””

Victoria glanced at Daniel.

“No physical altercation occurred.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

The director was silent.

Then he said:

“I'm going to ask you one more time. Did you put your hands on Naomi Carter?””

Victoria swallowed.

“Sir, I believe there has been a misunderstanding.””

“Have you checked the ownership reservation notes?””

Victoria didn't answer.

“Have you?””

“Yes.””

“Then you know exactly who she is.””

Victoria's face began to pale.

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

The glass doors were opening.

Marcus Carter walked into the lobby.

And the regional director was still speaking through the phone.

“Victoria, whatever you do, do not make this worse. The owner is—”

The line crackled.

Then Marcus's voice came from behind her.

“Victoria.””

She turned.

He stood only a few feet away.

His eyes moved from her face to Naomi's red cheek.

Then to the crying infant.

“Which one of you hit my daughter?””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then at Victoria.

“I'm waiting.””

Victoria opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Richard Lawson stepped forward and placed a document on the reception desk.

The first page carried the Carter Meridian Holdings logo.
