Chapter 9: The Daughter Hidden From Her Own Family

Marcus read the note three times.

He wanted to believe it was a forgery.

He wanted to believe someone had copied Thomas's handwriting and created another cruel lie.

But he recognized the distinctive way the letters leaned forward.

It was Thomas's handwriting.

His dead brother had known about another daughter.

And someone had been hiding her.

“Who is Amelia?”” Naomi whispered.

Marcus looked at the birth certificate.

“I don't know.””

“You're her father.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

Naomi sat down on a nearby storage box.

She looked at the date.

Then at the ledger.

“Dad, Mom had another baby while I was growing up?””

Marcus shook his head.

“The dates don't make sense.””

Richard examined the document.

“The certificate appears to have been issued thirteen years ago. That's the same period when Denise disappeared.””

Naomi looked up.

“So she had another child before she disappeared?””

“Possibly.””

Darius stepped closer.

“There's something I need to tell you.””

Marcus turned.

“Speak.””

Darius looked at the blue ledger.

“Thomas told me about Amelia.””

Naomi's head snapped toward him.

“You knew?””

“Not everything.””

“When?””

“About two years ago.””

Naomi stood.

“You knew I might have a sister, and you said nothing?””

Darius raised both hands.

“I didn't know she was your sister at first. Thomas told me there was a child connected to an old family trust.””

“What did he tell you?””

“That the child had been adopted.””

Naomi stared.

“Adopted by whom?””

Darius hesitated.

“Evelyn.””

The silence was immediate.

Marcus's expression turned dangerous.

“Evelyn Reed adopted my daughter?””

Darius nodded.

“That's what Thomas told me.””

Richard looked at the ledger again.

“Wait.””

He turned several pages.

There was an entry describing an emergency guardianship arrangement.

The document listed Evelyn Reed as the temporary guardian of Amelia Carter.

But beneath it was another name.

*Harold Whitmore.*

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“This is not an ordinary adoption record.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“What is it?””

“An emergency placement agreement. It appears to have been signed using the authority of the private medical facility.””

Naomi felt sick.

“Why would my mother give her baby to Evelyn?””

Richard looked at her.

“We don't know that she did.””

Marcus picked up the document.

There was a signature at the bottom.

Denise Carter.

He stared at it.

“This doesn't look like her handwriting.””

Darius looked away.

“Thomas said she was too sick to make decisions.””

Naomi turned toward him.

“Did you believe him?””

Darius swallowed.

“I did.””

She shook her head.

“You believed every lie that made things easier for you.””

Darius didn't respond.

Richard continued examining the safe.

Inside were several envelopes.

One contained old bank statements.

Another held a list of addresses.

The final envelope had been sealed with red wax.

Marcus broke the seal.

Inside was a letter written by Thomas.

It began:

Marcus, if you're reading this, something has gone wrong.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

He continued reading.

You always believed I was protecting the family. I told myself the same thing. But the truth is that I made decisions that should never have been mine to make.

The letter described the financial crisis that had occurred after Thomas's company suffered heavy losses.

According to the letter, Thomas had secretly used money from the children's trust to cover private debts.

He had intended to replace the money before anyone discovered the withdrawals.

But the losses grew.

Evelyn helped him create false financial records.

Harold Whitmore arranged the legal paperwork.

When Denise discovered the theft, she threatened to expose them.

Thomas wrote that he had arranged for Denise to be moved to a private facility under a false name.

He claimed it was temporary.

But once she realized what had happened, she refused to cooperate.

The letter ended with a sentence that made Marcus stop reading.

I never intended to keep her away from you forever. But once Evelyn took control of Amelia's guardianship, I realized I had lost control of everything.

Marcus lowered the paper.

“Amelia.””

Naomi looked at him.

“Dad, we have to find her.””

Richard checked the address list.

“There's a location connected to the guardianship records.””

He pointed to a property outside Charleston, South Carolina.

A residential estate registered to Reed Family Advisory Group.

Naomi stared.

“Evelyn's house?””

“Possibly.””

Marcus shook his head.

“We're not going there without knowing what we're walking into.””

Darius spoke quietly.

“There's another place.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“What place?”” Marcus asked.

Darius pointed to a handwritten address.

“Thomas used to visit a private residence near Charleston. He told me Amelia lived there.””

Naomi's eyes filled.

“Then let's go.””

At 11:40 p.m., the group arrived at the address.

The property was a large two-story house surrounded by tall trees and a white wooden fence.

A security camera stood above the entrance.

Richard called local counsel and confirmed that they could request a welfare check if they had credible reason to believe a child was being unlawfully concealed.

Marcus refused to force entry.

He wanted answers.

He also wanted to avoid frightening another child.

A light appeared upstairs.

Then a woman stepped onto the porch.

She wore a gray sweater and black trousers.

Her hair was tied back.

When she saw Marcus, she froze.

It was Evelyn.

She looked from him to Naomi.

Then to Richard.

Finally, her eyes landed on Darius.

“You brought them here?””

Darius looked down.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Where is Amelia?””

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Marcus held up the birth certificate.

“Don't lie to me.””

Evelyn's expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“From Thomas's storage unit.””

She looked toward Richard.

“You had no right to access those documents.””

Richard replied calmly.

“We have preserved the records. Their authenticity will be investigated.””

Evelyn turned toward Marcus.

“You need to leave.””

“No.””

“This is private property.””

“Where is my daughter?””

Evelyn's face tightened.

“Your daughter is Naomi.””

Naomi stepped forward.

“I'm asking about Amelia.””

Evelyn looked at her.

For a brief moment, something resembling pity crossed her face.

Then she said:

“You don't understand what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

Evelyn glanced toward the upstairs window.

A shadow moved behind the curtain.

Naomi noticed.

“Who's up there?””

Evelyn stepped in front of the door.

“Nobody.””

Naomi stared.

“There's someone in that room.””

“Go home, Naomi.””

“Is it my sister?””

Evelyn's face changed.

That was enough.

Naomi began crying.

“She's here.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Evelyn, open the door.””

She shook her head.

“Not tonight.””

Richard spoke quietly.

“Ms. Reed, given the documents we've discovered, I strongly advise you to cooperate. We can request a welfare check and have the guardianship records reviewed.””

Evelyn looked furious.

“You think you can frighten me with legal threats?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. I think you're frightened because the truth is finally catching up with you.””

A few minutes later, a woman emerged from the house.

She was younger than Evelyn, perhaps in her early thirties.

She carried a small blanket.

Her eyes moved between the people on the porch.

“Evelyn?””

Evelyn turned.

“Go back inside, Amelia.””

Naomi stopped breathing.

The woman looked at her.

“Who are you?””

Naomi stepped forward.

“My name is Naomi.””

The woman's expression changed.

She stared at Naomi's face.

Then at Marcus.

“Are you...?””

Marcus nodded.

“I'm Marcus Carter.””

The woman took a step backward.

“No.””

Naomi's voice trembled.

“Are you Amelia?””

The woman began crying.

“Yes.””

Naomi covered her mouth.

For thirteen years, she had believed she was an only child.

Now she was standing in front of a sister she had never known.

Amelia looked at Marcus.

“Why are you here?””

He struggled to find the words.

“Because I've been looking for you.””

Amelia shook her head.

“No, you haven't.””

Marcus flinched.

“I didn't know you existed.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“Is that what she told you?””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Amelia, please.””

Amelia moved away from her.

“You told me my father abandoned me.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Naomi felt tears running down her cheeks.

Amelia continued.

“You told me he chose his business over me. You said my mother had died and nobody wanted to take responsibility for me.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I never knew.””

Amelia looked at him.

“Then why didn't you find me?””

He had no answer.

Because he had never known where to look.

And because he had trusted the wrong people.

Naomi stepped closer.

“Amelia, I don't know what to say.””

Amelia looked at her.

“You're Naomi?””

“Yes.””

“The little girl in the photographs?””

Naomi nodded.

Amelia started crying harder.

“I thought you were gone.””

Naomi frowned.

“What?””

“Evelyn told me you died when you were young.””

Naomi stared at Evelyn.

The older woman looked away.

Amelia continued.

“She told me there was no point trying to find you.””

Naomi stepped forward.

“I'm right here.””

For several seconds, neither sister moved.

Then Amelia slowly reached out.

Naomi took her hand.

They stood together on the porch, crying.

Marcus watched them.

His entire world had changed in a single day.

Evelyn finally spoke.

“You don't understand what I did for her.””

Marcus turned.

“You told her I abandoned her.””

“I raised her!””

“You stole her identity.””

“I gave her a home!””

Naomi stepped between them.

“You kept us apart.””

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“I protected Amelia from the scandal.””

“What scandal?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Richard opened the ledger.

“The twelve-million-dollar trust?””

Evelyn looked at him.

He continued.

“The money was supposed to support both children. Instead, it was transferred through your private advisory company.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I didn't steal it.””

“Then where is it?””

She said nothing.

Marcus looked at her.

“You had thirteen years to tell the truth.””

Evelyn's voice cracked.

“Thomas said he would restore the money.””

“Thomas is dead.””

“He made me promise to protect Amelia.””

Marcus looked at the young woman.

“From what?””

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“From you.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

“Thomas told me that you knew about the money. He said you were going to take everything from the children and use it to save your company.””

Marcus stared.

“I never knew the trust had been touched.””

“I believed him.””

“And you never checked?””

Evelyn looked down.

“I was afraid.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Ms. Reed, you need to understand that the financial records indicate substantial misconduct. We will be referring everything to the appropriate authorities.””

Evelyn began crying.

But Marcus was no longer interested in her explanations.

He looked at Amelia.

“Would you like to come with us?””

Amelia glanced toward the house.

Then at Evelyn.

“I need time.””

Marcus nodded.

“You can have all the time you need.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“We don't have to become family overnight.””

Amelia gave a small, tearful smile.

“I'd like to meet Elijah.””

Naomi looked down at the baby.

“He's your nephew.””

Amelia touched his tiny hand.

“Hello, little man.””

Elijah opened his eyes.

And for the first time that night, Amelia smiled.

Just before midnight, Richard received another call.

He listened carefully.

Then he walked toward Marcus.

“There's a problem.””

Marcus sighed.

“What now?””

“The forensic team found another transaction in the trust records.””

“Another transfer?””

“Yes. A payment made three weeks ago.””

Marcus frowned.

“To whom?””

Richard turned the phone toward him.

The recipient's name appeared.

*HAROLD WHITMORE.*

Marcus looked at the date.

Three weeks earlier.

The same week the photograph of Denise had been taken.

Naomi stepped closer.

“Why would Evelyn pay Harold?””

Richard scrolled through the transaction details.

“The payment reference says: FINAL RELEASE — DENISE CARTER.””

Marcus's face changed.

“Denise?””

Richard nodded.

“There's a second notation.””

He enlarged the screen.

*SUBJECT TO CONFIRMATION OF DEATH.*

Naomi felt the world tilt.

“Confirmation of whose death?””

Richard looked at her.

“Your mother's.””

Amelia suddenly covered her mouth.

Evelyn stepped backward.

Marcus turned toward her.

“You told us Denise was alive yesterday.””

Evelyn's face went white.

Then she whispered:

“She was.””

Marcus stared.

“Was?””

Evelyn looked toward the dark road.

“Harold came to see her this morning.””

Naomi clutched Elijah.

“What did he do?””

Evelyn began shaking.

“He said he was going to finish what Thomas started.””

Richard immediately called the police.

But before anyone could speak again, Naomi's phone rang.

The unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice came through.

“Naomi Carter?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Harold Whitmore.””

Marcus reached for the phone.

But Harold spoke first.

“Tell your father that if he wants to see Denise alive again, he needs to bring me the blue ledger.””

Then the call ended.

And a message arrived seconds later.

It contained a photograph of Denise sitting in the passenger seat of a car.

Her eyes were closed.

Her head rested against the window.

May you like

Across the bottom of the image were five words:

*YOU HAVE UNTIL TOMORROW MORNING.*
