Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew the Truth

The first knock shook the entire house.

Naomi pulled Elijah close.

Grace rushed toward the curtains.

“Don't open that door!””

Marcus raised one hand, signaling everyone to stay back.

Richard quietly moved toward the hallway.

Outside, a man's voice called out.

“Grace! I know you're in there!””

Grace's face turned pale.

“It's him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Who?””

“Darius.””

Naomi stared at the door.

“He followed us?””

Grace nodded.

“He knows where Denise is hiding.””

Marcus's phone was still connected to Peter Wallace.

“Peter, stay on the line. Don't hang up.””

A frightened voice came through the speaker.

“Mr. Carter, please listen. Darius isn't working alone.””

Marcus glanced at Richard.

“Keep talking.””

Peter swallowed.

“Evelyn Reed has been using the old family legal office to manage payments. But the person coordinating everything is someone else.””

“Who?””

“Thomas's former attorney. Harold Whitmore.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Harold died last year.””

“No, sir. He didn't.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What are you saying?””

“He faked his death.””

Outside, Darius knocked again.

“Grace! Open the door!””

Naomi looked at Marcus.

“Dad, what do we do?””

Marcus kept his voice calm.

“We stay together.””

Richard called local law enforcement and reported the situation.

He explained that an individual was attempting to enter a private residence while a family member was being threatened.

Then Marcus moved toward the door.

Richard grabbed his arm.

“Don't.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I'm not going to fight him.””

He stepped closer to the entrance.

“Darius, I know you're outside.””

The knocking stopped.

“Uncle Marcus, open the door.””

“No.””

“Please. We need to talk.””

“You had plenty of opportunities to talk.””

Darius sighed.

“I came to warn you.””

Marcus looked through the peephole.

“About what?””

“Harold knows you're here.””

Marcus glanced toward Richard.

“Who is Harold?””

Darius hesitated.

“Thomas's attorney.””

“I know who Harold is. I also know he supposedly died last year.””

A long silence followed.

Then Darius said:

“He didn't.””

Five minutes later, local police arrived.

Darius stepped away from the door as two officers approached.

He immediately raised his hands.

“I'm not trying to hurt anyone.””

One officer asked for identification.

Darius handed over his driver's license.

The second officer spoke with Richard.

After verifying that no one had entered the property unlawfully, they allowed Marcus to speak with Darius outside under their supervision.

Naomi remained inside with Grace.

She could see them through the front window.

Marcus stood beneath the porch light.

Darius looked exhausted.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His hair was disheveled.

He no longer looked like the confident executive who had entered the resort earlier that afternoon.

“Why did you come here?”” Marcus asked.

Darius lowered his voice.

“Because Evelyn contacted me.””

“What did she want?””

“She said you had found the trust records. She told me to make sure Naomi didn't speak to Grace.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“Why?””

Darius looked toward the house.

“Because Grace knows where the original documents are.””

“What documents?””

“The ones Thomas kept.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Thomas's files?””

Darius nodded.

“There's a storage facility outside Savannah. Evelyn believes the original trust ledger is inside.””

“Why didn't you tell me earlier?””

Darius looked down.

“Because I helped them.””

Marcus waited.

Darius continued.

“I knew the reservation restriction was connected to the family dispute. I knew Evelyn wanted Naomi kept away from the resort. But I didn't know about your wife's survival.””

Marcus's voice became cold.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I swear.””

“You used my signature.””

“I was told it was a temporary administrative measure.””

“You allowed a woman to slap my daughter.””

Darius looked away.

“I didn't know she would do that.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“But you knew Naomi was being targeted.””

Darius had no answer.

Inside the house, Grace led Naomi to a small bedroom.

The walls were covered with photographs.

Some showed Denise standing beside the ocean.

Others showed her sitting in a garden.

There were photographs of her holding a small dog, baking cakes, and smiling beside Grace.

Naomi stopped in front of one photograph.

It showed Denise holding a tiny blue sweater.

The same sweater Naomi had worn as a baby.

A handwritten note was attached to the frame.

For my little girl, whenever I get to hold her again.

Naomi touched the glass.

“Mom.””

Grace stood beside her.

“She never stopped loving you.””

Naomi wiped her face.

“Did she ever try to contact me?””

“Several times.””

“Why didn't she?””

Grace took a breath.

“Because every time she tried, someone reminded her that you were being watched.””

Naomi turned.

“Who?””

Grace hesitated.

“Thomas.””

Naomi shook her head.

“My uncle?””

Grace nodded.

“He came here twice. The first time, he told Denise that your father had agreed to keep you away from the financial dispute.””

Naomi frowned.

“My father never agreed to that.””

“I know. Denise eventually realized Thomas was lying.””

“What happened the second time?””

Grace's expression changed.

“He brought a document for her to sign. It said she was voluntarily giving up her rights to the family trust.””

Naomi stared.

“She refused?””

“Yes.””

Grace walked toward a small cabinet.

“He became angry. He told her that if she didn't cooperate, you would lose everything.””

Naomi looked down.

“What did she do?””

“She signed nothing.””

Grace opened the cabinet and removed a small wooden box.

Inside were several letters, a photograph, and a USB drive.

“Denise gave these to me before she left yesterday.””

Naomi looked at the drive.

“What is it?””

“The original recordings.””

Grace handed it to her.

“Your mother recorded a conversation with Thomas. She wanted someone to hear what he said.””

Naomi felt her hands trembling.

“Can we listen?””

Grace nodded.

In the living room, Richard connected the USB drive to a laptop.

Marcus returned from the porch.

Darius remained outside with the officers.

Everyone gathered around the screen.

A file appeared.

*DENISE_THOMAS_FINAL_MEETING.wav*

Marcus looked at the name.

“Play it.””

Richard pressed the button.

A woman's voice filled the room.

It was older, softer, but unmistakably Denise.

“Thomas, I know what you did with the trust.””

A man's voice answered.

“Denise, you're making a mistake.””

“You moved twelve million dollars out of accounts intended for the children.””

“I moved money to protect the company.””

“You moved it into Evelyn's private firm.””

There was a pause.

Then Thomas spoke.

“Marcus doesn't need to know.””

Denise sounded furious.

“Naomi deserves to know.””

“Naomi is a child.””

“She is the beneficiary.””

“She's not ready.””

“She has a right to her inheritance.””

Thomas laughed.

“You really think money is going to make her safe?””

Denise's voice changed.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas replied quietly.

“It means you should stop asking questions.””

The recording continued.

Then came a sentence that made Marcus freeze.

“Your husband will never find you if I have anything to do with it.””

A chair scraped.

Denise shouted.

“Don't you dare threaten my daughter!””

The recording ended abruptly.

Naomi looked at her father.

“Did you know?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Richard replayed the final section.

Then he noticed another file.

*THOMAS_ADMISSION.wav*

Marcus looked at Grace.

“What's this?””

Grace swallowed.

“Denise said it was the most important recording.””

Richard opened it.

Thomas's voice emerged.

“I didn't arrange her death. I arranged for everyone to believe she was dead.””

The room became completely silent.

Then Thomas continued.

“Marcus was too busy grieving to question anything. By the time he realized the truth, I had already moved the money.””

Naomi covered her mouth.

Marcus gripped the edge of the table.

The recording continued.

“But Harold made one mistake. He kept the original medical documents.””

Richard stopped playback.

“Harold Whitmore.””

Marcus nodded.

“His former attorney.””

Grace looked toward the door.

“Then we have to find him.””

Richard opened the remaining files.

One document contained a storage facility address.

Another contained a handwritten note from Denise.

If anything happens to me, the truth is in the blue ledger.

Naomi stared at the words.

“The blue ledger?””

Grace nodded.

“Thomas kept it in a private storage unit.””

Richard checked the address.

“It's twenty minutes from here.””

Marcus looked at his watch.

“We go tonight.””

Outside, Darius was speaking to one of the officers.

Marcus approached him.

“You're coming with us.””

Darius looked startled.

“Why?””

“Because you know where the storage unit is.””

Darius swallowed.

“Uncle, I don't think that's a good idea.””

Marcus stared at him.

“You've spent years making decisions on behalf of this family. Now you're going to help us find out what you were part of.””

Darius lowered his head.

“Okay.””

Naomi stepped outside holding Elijah.

She looked at her cousin.

“Darius?””

He turned.

“I'm sorry, Naomi.””

She looked at him for a long moment.

“Help us find my mother.””

He nodded.

“I will.””

Just then, Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice spoke rapidly.

Richard's expression changed.

He turned toward Marcus.

“It's the hospital.””

Marcus frowned.

“What hospital?””

“The private medical facility where Denise was treated thirteen years ago.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“What about it?””

Richard listened for another moment.

Then he lowered the phone.

“They found the original admission record.””

Marcus's voice became tense.

“And?””

Richard looked at Naomi.

“Your mother wasn't admitted under her own name.””

Naomi's eyes widened.

“What name did she use?””

Richard read from the report.

“Denise Whitmore.””

Marcus went completely still.

“Whitmore?””

Richard nodded.

“The same surname as Harold Whitmore.””

Then he added:

“The hospital also recorded a second patient admitted on the same night.””

Naomi felt a chill.

“Who?””

Richard looked at the report again.

“A newborn baby girl.””

Marcus stared.

Naomi's voice barely came out.

“Mom had another child?””

Richard shook his head.

“No. The birth record lists the baby's mother as Denise Carter.””

Naomi looked down at Elijah.

Then back at Richard.

“Who is the baby?””

Richard swallowed.

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

At the storage facility, the night security lights flickered across rows of metal doors.

Darius led them to unit 418.

He entered a six-digit code.

The lock clicked.

Marcus pulled the door upward.

Inside were several cardboard boxes, an old filing cabinet, and a large blue metal safe.

Richard examined the cabinet.

“There's a ledger here.””

He removed a thick blue book.

The cover was worn.

A small label read:

*CARTER FAMILY TRUST — ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY RECORDS.*

Marcus opened it.

Names.

Dates.

Transfers.

Account numbers.

Then a folded document slipped from the back cover.

Naomi picked it up.

It was a birth certificate.

The mother's name was Denise Carter.

The father's name was Marcus Carter.

And the child's name was not Naomi.

It was another name.

*Amelia Carter.*

Naomi looked at her father.

“Dad?””

Marcus stared at the certificate.

His face had gone white.

Then Darius whispered:

“Uncle Marcus, I know that name.””

Marcus slowly turned toward him.

“Where have you heard it?””

Darius pointed at the final page of the ledger.

A handwritten note had been added beneath the birth record.

Amelia is alive. Do not let Marcus find her until the trust is transferred.

And beside the note was a date.

Three weeks earlier.
