Chapter 6: The Twelve-Million-Dollar Betrayal

Marcus Carter had spent years believing that the worst thing his brother ever did was die before they could repair their relationship.

Thomas had been brilliant, stubborn, and sometimes impossible.

But he had been family.

Marcus had never imagined that someone might have used his brother's death to steal money intended for the next generation.

He looked at the laptop.

Then at Evelyn.

“Tell me why twelve million dollars went into your family's company.””

Evelyn remained standing.

“Marcus, the transaction was part of a legitimate advisory arrangement.””

Richard opened another document.

“Then you won't mind explaining why the receiving company was registered four months before the transfer.””

Evelyn's face tightened.

“I'm not discussing confidential company records without counsel.””

Marcus nodded.

“That's your right.””

He turned toward Richard.

“Preserve everything. Suspend her system access. Notify the board's audit committee.””

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“You can't suspend me based on an allegation.””

“I'm not firing you based on an allegation. I'm preserving company records while we investigate a transaction involving twelve million dollars.””

“Marcus, I have served this family for eight years.””

“And today I learned you used a dead man's name to restrict my daughter's access to a hotel room.””

Evelyn's lips parted.

“You don't understand the circumstances.””

“Then explain them.””

She glanced at Naomi.

“Not in front of her.””

Naomi stood.

“Why not?””

Evelyn looked uncomfortable.

“Because this involves private financial matters.””

Naomi's voice was calm.

“My name is on the document. My identity was used to justify a twelve-million-dollar claim. I think I deserve to hear it.””

Evelyn looked toward Marcus.

He nodded.

“Go ahead.””

Richard placed the trust agreement on the table.

“The Carter Family Children's Trust was created fifteen years ago. It was designed to provide educational, housing, and emergency financial support to the grandchildren.””

Naomi nodded slowly.

“I remember Grandpa talking about it.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Your grandfather wanted every grandchild to have a secure start in life.””

Richard continued.

“The original trust held approximately twelve million dollars. Three years ago, the entire amount was transferred into a private advisory account.””

Naomi looked at Evelyn.

“Your company?””

Evelyn didn't answer.

Richard opened another file.

“The transfer authorization lists Thomas Carter as the approving officer. However, the electronic signature metadata suggests the authorization was created after his death.””

Marcus stared.

“After his death?””

Richard nodded.

“The file was uploaded eleven days after Thomas passed away.””

Naomi covered her mouth.

Darius, who had been standing near the door, finally spoke.

“That's impossible.””

Richard looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Evelyn told me Thomas signed the directive before he died.””

Richard slid the document toward him.

“Then explain why the document was created eleven days afterward.””

Darius looked at Evelyn.

“You told me it was legitimate.””

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“I told you what the legal department had approved.””

Richard shook his head.

“The legal department has no record of approving this transaction.””

Evelyn grabbed her handbag.

“This conversation is over.””

Marcus didn't move.

“You're free to leave, Evelyn. But your company access has been suspended, and the board will be notified.””

She looked at him.

“You're making a serious mistake.””

Marcus replied quietly.

“No. I made a serious mistake when I trusted you without oversight.””

Evelyn walked toward the door.

Before leaving, she turned toward Naomi.

“You should be careful about who you believe. Your father doesn't know everything about his own family.””

Naomi stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn gave a thin smile.

“Ask him what happened the week your mother disappeared.””

Then she walked out.

The door closed.

Naomi turned slowly toward Marcus.

“Dad?””

He didn't answer immediately.

“What's she talking about?””

Marcus sat down.

For the first time that day, he looked exhausted.

Naomi's mother, Denise Carter, had died when Naomi was sixteen.

At least, that was what Naomi had always believed.

She remembered the hospital.

She remembered her father's tears.

She remembered a funeral attended by hundreds of people.

She remembered being told that a sudden medical complication had taken her mother away.

But she also remembered something else.

A week before her mother's death, Denise had packed a small suitcase.

She had told Naomi they might be going somewhere for a little while.

Marcus had said it was only a short family trip.

Then everything had changed.

Naomi had never asked too many questions.

The memories were painful.

Now Evelyn's words had opened a door she had spent thirteen years trying to keep closed.

“Dad, what happened the week Mom disappeared?””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Your mother was involved in a financial dispute with Thomas.””

Naomi frowned.

“What kind of dispute?””

“She discovered irregularities in the family trust.””

Richard looked up.

Marcus continued.

“She believed someone was using the children's trust to finance private investments.””

Naomi's eyes widened.

“Did she know about the twelve million dollars?””

“She suspected something was wrong.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because you were sixteen. Your mother had just died, and I wanted you to have a normal life.””

Naomi's voice trembled.

“Did Mom die because of that dispute?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don't believe so.””

“You don't believe so?””

He looked down.

“I was told she died from complications after an emergency medical procedure.””

Naomi felt her chest tighten.

“Who told you?””

“Thomas.””

The room became silent.

Richard closed his laptop.

Marcus looked toward the ocean.

“I was overseas when it happened. Thomas handled the arrangements. He said your mother had been taken to a private medical facility and that there was nothing anyone could do.””

Naomi stared at him.

“Did you see her?””

Marcus's eyes filled.

“No.””

She stepped backward.

“Dad?””

“I was told the funeral arrangements had already been completed.””

“You didn't see her?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I was grieving. I was trying to protect you. I trusted my brother.””

Naomi's face crumpled.

For thirteen years, she had believed her mother had died.

Now someone was suggesting that the story she had been given might not be true.

Marcus reached for her.

“Naomi, sweetheart—”

She stepped into his arms.

“Why would Uncle Thomas lie?””

Marcus held her tightly.

“I don't know.””

Richard stood quietly nearby.

Then he looked at his phone.

A new email had arrived from the independent forensic accounting team.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

“Marcus.””

Marcus looked up.

“What now?””

Richard turned the laptop toward him.

“We found the original trust beneficiary records.””

Marcus approached.

The report showed that the twelve-million-dollar trust had not been intended for all the grandchildren equally.

One beneficiary had been listed as the primary recipient.

*Naomi Denise Carter.*

Marcus stared.

“That can't be right.””

Richard scrolled farther.

“There's more.””

The document showed a second account created in Naomi's name.

It had received regular transfers for several years.

But the account had been emptied on the same day the trust money disappeared.

Naomi looked at the screen.

“Who took it?””

Richard opened the final page.

The withdrawal authorization carried two signatures.

One belonged to Thomas Carter.

The other belonged to someone who was still alive.

Someone who had been standing in that suite only minutes earlier.

*Evelyn Reed.*

Marcus looked at the closed door.

“Get the board on the phone.””

Richard nodded.

But before he could make the call, Naomi's phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Then a text appeared.

<escape>Naomi, I know what happened to your mother. Your father doesn't know the whole truth. If you want answers, meet me tonight at the old marina. Come alone.</escape>

Naomi stared at the message.

Another text arrived.

This time, it included a photograph.

A grainy image of a woman standing outside a small white house.

The woman had shoulder-length dark hair.

She wore a blue coat.

And around her neck was a silver necklace Naomi recognized immediately.

It was the necklace her mother had been wearing the last time Naomi remembered seeing her alive.

Naomi's fingers began to tremble.

“Dad?””

Marcus turned.

“What is it?””

She handed him the phone.

He looked at the photograph.

His face went completely pale.

May you like

Because the woman in the picture looked exactly like Denise Carter.

And the photograph had been taken three weeks earlier.
