Chapter 3: The Name on the Secret Document

The medical team arrived within minutes.

A nurse examined Danielle's cheek while another checked Lily's breathing and temperature.

Richard stood beside them, refusing to move more than a few feet away.

“Is she all right?”” he asked.

The nurse smiled gently.

“Your granddaughter appears to be fine, sir. She's upset, but her breathing and vital signs are normal.””

Richard exhaled.

“And my daughter?””

“We recommend that she be evaluated for any injury from the fall. The swelling on her cheek should also be documented.””

“Do whatever you need to do.””

Danielle touched his arm.

“Dad, I'm okay.””

Richard looked at her.

“You don't have to convince me you're okay.””

She looked down.

“I just didn't want you to get upset.””

He gave a quiet, sad smile.

“Sweetheart, someone hurt my family. I think I'm allowed to be upset.””

Across the lobby, Victoria was speaking urgently into her phone.

“Yes, I understand,” she whispered.

“But you need to come here. Right now.””

Brian stood beside her, rubbing his forehead.

“What are you doing?”” he muttered.

Victoria covered the microphone.

“Fixing this.””

“How?””

“By making sure the right people understand what happened.””

Brian glanced toward Richard.

“I'm not lying for you.””

Victoria's eyes sharpened.

“You're not lying. You're remembering things correctly.””

“I saw you slap her.””

Victoria stared at him.

Then she leaned closer.

“Do you remember who approved your promotion last year?””

Brian looked away.

“Victoria—”

“You were making sixty thousand dollars before I recommended you for this position. You have a mortgage, two children, and a wife who doesn't work.””

Brian's jaw tightened.

“Don't bring my family into this.””

“Then don't bring my name into trouble.””

Richard had heard enough to know something was wrong.

But he didn't interrupt.

He wanted the evidence.

A few minutes later, a broad-shouldered man in a navy suit hurried through the revolving doors.

His name was Thomas Reed, the director of human resources.

He walked directly toward Victoria.

“What's going on?””

Victoria immediately stepped in front of him.

“Thomas, thank goodness. We have a visitor who became physically disruptive, and Mr. Whitmore has misunderstood the situation.””

Thomas glanced at Danielle.

Then at Richard.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Richard nodded.

“Thomas.””

Thomas straightened his jacket.

“Sir. I wasn't expecting you downstairs.””

“Neither was I.””

Richard pointed toward Danielle.

“My daughter was assaulted in this lobby.””

Thomas blinked.

“Assaulted?””

Victoria immediately interrupted.

“That's an exaggeration.””

Richard didn't turn.

“Thomas, I want you to listen carefully. A building manager struck a woman holding a newborn. A security employee then attempted to remove her. I want an independent investigation, and I want the evidence preserved.””

Thomas looked at Victoria.

“Did you strike her?””

Victoria's lips tightened.

“I was trying to prevent a disruption.””

“That's not an answer.””

She glanced at Richard.

“I made physical contact because she was refusing to cooperate.””

Danielle slowly stood, with the nurse helping her.

“Physical contact?”” she repeated.

Victoria turned.

“Please don't start again.””

Danielle looked directly at her.

“You slapped me.””

Victoria rolled her eyes.

“I already explained—”

“You slapped me while I was holding my daughter.””

The nurse stepped between them.

“Please give her some space.””

Thomas looked increasingly uncomfortable.

“Victoria, I need you to come with me to the conference room.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

Thomas stopped.

“Sir?””

“This happened in the lobby. The investigation starts here. I don't want anyone separated from the witnesses before their statements are taken.””

Thomas nodded.

“Understood.””

Emily quietly approached with a tablet.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Richard turned.

“Yes, Emily?””

“I have the incident recording.””

Victoria's face drained.

“Emily, I told you—”

Richard raised his hand.

“Let her speak.””

Emily swallowed.

“The recording includes the moment Ms. Hale approached Danielle. It also includes the slap, Mr. Keller's instructions, and what happened afterward.””

“Is the audio clear?””

“Yes, sir.””

“Has it been backed up?””

“Twice.””

Victoria took a step toward her.

“You have no idea what you've done.””

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“I was just following the rules.””

Richard looked at her.

“Then you did the right thing.””

He turned to Michael.

“Have the recording copied for the investigation. Make sure the original remains untouched.””

Michael nodded.

“Already arranged.””

Victoria's phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

Her expression changed.

She answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice came through loudly enough for Brian to hear.

“Victoria, what is happening? Why is Richard Whitmore downstairs?””

Victoria lowered her voice.

“I'm handling it.””

“You'd better be. The board meeting is in twenty minutes.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“Have you spoken to the trust administrator?””

“Not yet.””

“Then do it now.””

Victoria ended the call.

Danielle noticed the name displayed briefly on the screen.

*EVELYN SHAW — BOARD SECRETARY.*

She frowned.

“Dad?””

Richard looked at her.

“What is it?””

“Why would the board secretary be calling Victoria?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

He was still staring at the document on his phone.

“Because there may be a connection between this incident and something I've been investigating.””

He showed Danielle the photograph.

It was a legal document containing several pages of signatures, company seals, and financial authorizations.

Danielle recognized her own name.

*DANIELLE MARIE BROOKS.*

She read the line beneath it.

*AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY AND SIGNATORY — WHITMORE FAMILY TRUST.*

Her stomach tightened.

“Dad, what is this?””

Richard took a breath.

“Three months ago, I created a private family trust for you and Lily.””

Danielle looked up.

“You did what?””

“I wanted to make sure you and your daughter would always have financial security, regardless of what happened to me.””

“Dad, I told you I didn't want special treatment.””

“This wasn't about special treatment. It was about protecting my family.””

She looked at the document again.

“Why is my name on this?””

“Because you're the primary beneficiary.””

Danielle turned another page.

There were transaction records.

A series of large transfers.

One transfer was dated six weeks earlier.

Another had occurred just four days ago.

The amounts were enormous.

Danielle's voice became quiet.

“Dad, I don't understand.””

Richard's expression darkened.

“Neither do I.””

He pointed to the bottom of the page.

There was a signature.

It appeared to be Danielle's.

But she had never signed it.

“That's not my signature,” she whispered.

Richard nodded.

“I know.””

Victoria had stopped talking.

She was watching them.

Brian noticed her expression.

“What?”” he whispered.

She didn't answer.

Danielle examined the document again.

“Someone used my name?””

“Apparently.””

“Who?””

Richard looked toward Michael.

“Have you identified the transactions?””

Michael nodded.

“We have preliminary information. The authorizations were processed through the family office, but the requests came from an internal corporate account.””

Richard's face hardened.

“Which account?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he looked toward Victoria.

“The account belongs to the building management division.””

Danielle turned slowly.

Victoria's face was almost colorless.

Richard stared at her.

“Ms. Hale.””

Victoria lifted her chin.

“Yes, sir?””

“Do you know anything about these transactions?””

She shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“Are you certain?””

“Absolutely.””

Michael opened another page on his tablet.

“Sir, there's one more issue.””

Richard looked at him.

“What?””

“The authorization requests were submitted using a digital identity connected to a senior employee. We haven't completed the verification, but the account was accessed from this building.””

Victoria stepped backward.

Brian stared at her.

Danielle clutched her daughter closer.

“Dad, why would anyone steal my identity?””

Richard looked at the document again.

“That's what we're going to find out.””

Then Michael spoke.

“Sir, there's something else.””

“What?””

“The person who approved the first transfer wasn't Ms. Hale.””

Richard frowned.

“Then who?””

Michael turned the tablet around.

A name appeared on the screen.

*EVELYN SHAW.*

The same woman who had just called Victoria.

The board secretary.

Richard's expression became unreadable.

He looked toward the elevators.

“Get me Evelyn.””

Michael nodded and started walking.

But before he could reach the doors, Brian suddenly spoke.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Richard turned.

Brian's hands were shaking.

“There's something you should know.””

Victoria spun toward him.

“Brian, don't.””

He swallowed.

“I think the person who ordered us to remove Danielle today knew exactly who she was.””

Danielle's heart began pounding.

“What do you mean?””

Brian looked at Victoria.

Then he looked at Richard.

“Ms. Hale received a message this morning. She was told that a woman named Danielle Brooks might arrive with a baby.””

Richard's face went completely still.

“Who sent that message?””

Brian opened his mouth.

Victoria grabbed his sleeve.

“Don't you dare.””

Richard's voice was dangerously calm.

“Mr. Keller. Who sent the message?””

Brian pulled a folded sheet of paper from his uniform pocket.

He placed it on the reception desk.

At the top was a printed instruction.

And beneath the instruction was a handwritten note.

*IF RICHARD WHITMORE'S DAUGHTER ARRIVES, DO NOT LET HER REACH THE EXECUTIVE FLOOR.*

Danielle stared at the words.

Her father slowly lifted his eyes.

Then Brian pointed to the signature at the bottom.

May you like

“Sir,” he whispered, “the instruction came directly from someone on your board.””

And when Richard read the name, he realized the attack on his daughter might have been planned long before she ever entered the building.
