Chapter 6: The Office That Had Been Locked for Four Years

Richard didn't speak for nearly a minute.

His wife's office was on the twenty-sixth floor.

It had been locked since the day she died.

Not because he wanted to preserve the furniture or the photographs.

But because he couldn't bring himself to change anything.

Margaret Whitmore had been his partner long before Sterling Crown became a corporate empire.

She had helped him build the company from a small investment firm into a multinational business.

She had also been the first person to believe Danielle could succeed without depending on her father's money.

When Margaret died, Richard closed the office.

He kept the key.

Nobody entered.

Nobody worked there.

At least, that was what he believed.

“Michael,” he said quietly.

“Yes, sir?””

“Who has access to Margaret's office?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“According to the security register, only you.””

Richard stared at him.

“Then how was a device used from inside that room?””

“We don't know yet.””

Richard turned toward the board.

“The investigation is moving upstairs.””

He looked at Danielle.

“Sweetheart, I want you to stay with the medical team.””

She shook her head.

“Dad, I'm coming.””

“Danielle—”

“Someone has been using my name. Someone tried to keep me away from you. And now they're using Mom's old office.””

Her voice trembled.

“I'm not sitting here while everyone else decides what happened.””

Richard looked at his daughter.

He saw Margaret in her expression.

The same stubbornness.

The same courage.

He nodded.

“All right.””

Then he looked at Michael.

“Prepare the private elevator.””

Within minutes, the group was moving upstairs.

Richard walked at the front.

Danielle followed with Lily.

Emily was allowed to accompany them as a witness.

Brian remained with corporate security to provide a formal statement.

Victoria was placed on administrative leave.

As the elevator climbed, Danielle looked at the floor numbers.

Twenty-two.

Twenty-three.

Twenty-four.

She turned toward her father.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Did Mom ever mention anything about the trust?””

Richard nodded.

“She helped design the original arrangement.””

“Did she know Evelyn?””

“Very well.””

Danielle looked down at Lily.

“Could Mom have known something was wrong?””

Richard didn't answer.

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened onto a quiet corridor lined with dark wooden panels.

At the end stood a large double door.

A brass plaque read:

*MARGARET WHITMORE — FOUNDER'S OFFICE*

Richard took a small key from his pocket.

He inserted it into the lock.

It turned.

But the door didn't open.

Something was blocking it from the other side.

Michael stepped forward.

“Sir, let me.””

He pushed carefully.

The door moved several inches.

Then stopped.

Richard leaned closer.

A faint electronic beep came from inside.

He frowned.

“That's not right.””

Emily looked toward the door.

“Sir, is there supposed to be an alarm?””

“No.””

Michael examined the keypad.

“Someone installed an additional security lock.””

Richard stared at it.

“Who authorized that?””

Michael shook his head.

“I've never seen this system before.””

Danielle moved closer.

“Dad, look.””

She pointed to a tiny black camera mounted above the doorframe.

A red light blinked.

Someone was monitoring the entrance.

Richard looked at Michael.

“Find out where that camera connects.””

Michael checked the wiring.

“It's connected to a private internal network.””

“Can you identify the user?””

“I'm trying.””

A soft sound came from inside the office.

A chair moving.

Everyone froze.

Danielle looked at her father.

“Did you hear that?””

Richard nodded.

He knocked.

“Who's inside?””

No answer.

He knocked again.

“This is Richard Whitmore. Open the door.””

A voice finally came through.

It was a woman's voice.

“Richard?””

He recognized it immediately.

His face changed.

“Evelyn?””

There was silence.

Then the voice spoke again.

“Please don't come in.””

Michael looked at Richard.

Danielle's eyes widened.

Evelyn had supposedly been escorted downstairs.

But she was here.

Inside Margaret's locked office.

Richard's voice became cold.

“Open the door.””

“I can't explain this in front of everyone.””

“You have thirty seconds.””

A metallic sound came from inside.

Then the electronic lock clicked.

Michael pushed the door open.

The office was dark except for a desk lamp.

The curtains were closed.

A laptop sat open on Margaret's old desk.

Beside it were several folders, a portable hard drive, and a stack of printed bank documents.

Evelyn stood near the window.

Her navy jacket was gone.

Her sleeves were rolled up.

She looked nothing like the polished executive who had walked into the lobby earlier.

Richard stared at her.

“How did you get in here?””

Evelyn looked toward Danielle.

“Not now.””

Richard stepped into the room.

“This office has been locked for four years.””

“I know.””

“Then explain how you have been using it.””

Evelyn looked at the laptop.

“I was trying to protect something.””

Richard laughed once.

“Protect what?””

She pointed toward the screen.

“Your wife's files.””

Danielle moved closer.

“Mom's files?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Margaret discovered something before she died.””

Richard's expression changed.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“She discovered that someone was manipulating the company's accounts.””

Richard stared.

“When?””

“About five years ago.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“She tried.””

Richard's face hardened.

“No. She would have told me.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“She was afraid.””

Richard looked genuinely shaken.

“Afraid of whom?””

Evelyn glanced at the laptop.

Then she spoke.

“Your brother.””

Richard went completely still.

His younger brother, James Whitmore, had been dead for six years.

He had died in a car accident outside Boston.

Richard had never suspected anything.

“That's impossible.””

Evelyn opened a folder.

“James created several shell companies before his death. Margaret discovered that money was being moved through them.””

Richard stared at the documents.

“Why would my brother steal from the company?””

“Because he believed the company belonged to him as much as it belonged to you.””

Richard shook his head.

“He was my brother.””

“And he was angry.””

Evelyn placed another document on the desk.

“Margaret found evidence that James had been planning to transfer control of several corporate assets. She intended to expose him.””

Danielle looked at the laptop.

“Is that why Mom's office was locked?””

Evelyn nodded.

“After she died, I found the files. I kept them hidden because I believed someone else was involved.””

Richard's voice dropped.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked toward the open doorway.

“I don't know.””

Then Michael spoke.

“Sir, there's a problem.””

Richard turned.

“What?””

Michael was staring at his phone.

“The building's security system just registered an unauthorized access to the family archive.””

“Where?””

Michael looked up.

“From this office.””

Richard frowned.

“But we're standing here.””

Michael shook his head.

“Not this computer. Another device.””

Danielle looked at the laptop.

A new notification appeared.

*REMOTE SESSION ACTIVE.*

Someone was connected to the computer.

Evelyn rushed toward the keyboard.

“Don't touch it!””

Richard stopped her.

“Why?””

“Because if they know we're here, they'll erase everything.””

The screen suddenly went black.

A second later, a video file opened automatically.

The image was grainy.

It showed Margaret Whitmore sitting at the same desk.

She looked tired.

Her hair was tied back.

She stared directly into the camera.

Richard stopped breathing.

“Margaret…”

Danielle covered her mouth.

It was her mother.

Alive in a recording.

Margaret leaned toward the camera.

“If you're watching this, then someone has finally opened the office.””

She paused.

Then she looked directly into the lens.

“Richard, I'm sorry I didn't tell you everything.””

Richard stepped closer.

The recording continued.

“There's something you need to know about Danielle's trust. It was never supposed to be a financial inheritance alone. It was created to protect the one person who knows where the original evidence is hidden.””

Danielle stared at the screen.

“What evidence?””

Margaret took a breath.

“Danielle, sweetheart, if you're watching this, I need you to remember something I told you when you were little.””

The room became silent.

“Your grandmother gave you a small silver music box. You loved it so much that you carried it everywhere.””

Danielle's eyes widened.

She looked at her father.

“Mom's music box?””

Richard nodded slowly.

Margaret continued.

“There's something inside it that must never fall into the wrong hands.””

The video flickered.

Then Margaret said the words that made Richard's blood run cold.

“Because the person who betrayed our family is not the person you think. And if he discovers that Danielle still has the music box, he will come for her and Lily.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Danielle stared at her father.

“Dad?””

Richard looked at her.

“Where is the music box?””

Danielle's lips trembled.

She remembered it.

She had kept it for years.

After her mother died, she had placed it in a small wooden box with her childhood photographs.

But when she moved apartments six months earlier, she had given several boxes to a storage company.

She reached for her phone.

“Dad, I know where it is.””

Richard exhaled.

“Where?””

“It's in my storage unit.””

Michael immediately stepped forward.

“Sir, we should secure it.””

Richard nodded.

“Call the security team. Nobody goes near that unit without authorization.””

But before Michael could make the call, Evelyn spoke.

“It's too late.””

Richard turned.

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn pointed to the laptop.

A final message had appeared on the black screen.

*THANK YOU FOR OPENING THE ARCHIVE. WE NOW KNOW WHERE THE MUSIC BOX IS.*

Danielle's phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

She looked down.

One message.

*Beautiful baby. It would be a shame if something happened to her.*

Danielle's face drained of color.

Richard took the phone from her.

He read the message.

Then he looked toward the corridor.

“Lock down this floor.””

Michael hurried out.

Richard turned to his daughter.

“Danielle, listen to me. You're not going anywhere alone.””

She clutched Lily tightly.

“Dad, who is doing this?””

Richard looked at the message again.

His eyes moved toward Evelyn.

But Evelyn was no longer watching him.

She was staring at the laptop.

Her lips moved silently.

Then she whispered something that made Richard turn pale.

“James is alive.””

And somewhere inside Sterling Crown Tower, a private elevator began descending toward the lobby.

*The man everyone believed had died six years earlier was coming back.*
