Chapter 4: The Name That Made Her Father Tremble

Richard Whitmore read the signature three times.

He had spent forty years building Sterling Crown Holdings. He had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions, survived hostile takeovers, and watched powerful men lie directly to his face without blinking.

But the name on that sheet of paper made his stomach turn.

*Evelyn Shaw.*

The company's board secretary.

His closest professional adviser for nearly eighteen years.

The woman who had attended his wife's funeral.

The woman who had helped him establish the family trust for Danielle and Lily.

And apparently, the woman who had ordered his daughter to be kept away from him.

Richard lowered the paper.

“Michael.””

His executive assistant stepped forward.

“Yes, sir?””

“Call Evelyn. Tell her I want her downstairs.””

Michael hesitated.

“She's already in the building. She's in the boardroom.””

“Then tell her to come here.””

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“Mr. Whitmore, I really think we should handle this carefully.””

Richard looked at her.

“You've said that several times.””

“Because there are serious corporate implications.””

“I'm aware.””

Victoria clasped her hands.

“Perhaps the document Brian produced was misunderstood. We don't know whether it's authentic.””

Brian shook his head.

“I received it directly from your office.””

Victoria spun around.

“Be quiet!””

Richard raised his eyebrows.

“Interesting. You're ordering an employee to remain silent while I'm investigating an instruction that may have originated from your office.””

Victoria's cheeks flushed.

“I'm trying to protect the company.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“So am I.””

Danielle sat in a chair beside the reception desk. Her daughter was finally asleep against her chest.

She looked at her father.

“Dad, why would Evelyn want to keep me away from you?””

Richard pulled a chair closer.

“I don't know yet.””

“But she knows me.””

“Yes.””

“She sent me flowers when Lily was born.””

Richard's expression softened.

“I remember.””

“She even called to congratulate me.””

He nodded.

Danielle looked at the paper again.

“Then why?””

Richard didn't have an answer.

He remembered the day he had created the family trust.

Three months earlier, he had sat in his private office with Evelyn and his attorney, discussing how to protect his daughter and granddaughter.

Evelyn had suggested additional security measures.

She had recommended that Danielle's name be entered into the company's internal beneficiary system.

She had even insisted that the documents be handled personally.

Richard had trusted her.

Now he wondered whether that trust had been his greatest mistake.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Emily approached the group.

Richard looked up.

“Yes?””

“I found something else in the reception system.””

Victoria immediately stiffened.

“What now?””

Emily ignored her.

“When Ms. Hale came downstairs this morning, she asked me to flag a visitor named Danielle Brooks.””

Danielle's eyes widened.

“When?””

“About forty minutes before you arrived.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Did she say why?””

Emily shook her head.

“She said the visitor was not authorized to enter the executive floors. She also told me to notify her immediately if anyone matching your daughter's description arrived.””

Victoria interrupted.

“That's standard building security procedure.””

Emily looked at her.

“Then why did you tell me to watch for a woman carrying a newborn?””

Victoria said nothing.

Emily continued.

“You also said she might be wearing a beige blouse and carrying a diaper bag.””

Danielle slowly looked at her father.

“They knew what I was wearing.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

He turned to Michael.

“Find out who provided my daughter's arrival information.””

Michael nodded.

“I'm on it.””

At that moment, the elevator doors opened.

A woman in a navy designer suit emerged.

She was in her late fifties, with carefully styled blond hair and a leather folder tucked beneath one arm.

Evelyn Shaw.

She walked toward Richard with a practiced smile.

“Richard. I heard there was an incident.””

He didn't return the smile.

“Good. Then you know why I called you.””

Evelyn glanced at Danielle.

“Oh, sweetheart. Are you all right?””

Danielle stared at her.

“You knew I was coming.””

Evelyn paused.

“What?””

“You knew I was coming here today.””

Evelyn looked at Richard.

“I don't understand.””

Richard held up the paper.

“Did you authorize this instruction?””

Evelyn glanced at the document.

Her expression barely changed.

“No.””

Brian stepped forward.

“I received it from Ms. Hale's office.””

Evelyn turned toward him.

“And who are you?””

“Brian Keller. Security assistant.””

“I don't know you.””

Brian looked stunned.

“You've been in our office several times.””

Evelyn gave a small, dismissive smile.

“I'm afraid I meet hundreds of employees.””

Richard placed the document on the desk.

“Evelyn, the instruction contains your signature.””

She examined it.

Then she shook her head.

“It's a forgery.””

Victoria exhaled.

“That's what I said.””

Richard watched both women carefully.

“Convenient.””

Evelyn opened her leather folder.

“Richard, this is precisely why we need to be careful. There are sensitive financial matters involving the family trust. We shouldn't discuss them in a public lobby.””

Danielle looked up.

“What financial matters?””

Evelyn gave her a sympathetic expression.

“Nothing you need to worry about, dear.””

Danielle's fingers tightened around Lily's blanket.

“I'm the beneficiary. I think I need to worry about anything involving my name.””

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

Richard slowly stood.

“My daughter is right.””

He pointed toward the document.

“Tell me about the transfers.””

Evelyn sighed.

“Richard, those transactions were authorized through the proper channels.””

“By whom?””

“Your family office.””

“My family office reports directly to me.””

“Not exclusively.””

Richard narrowed his eyes.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn opened her folder and removed another document.

“The trust agreement contains an emergency administrative clause. Under certain circumstances, the board secretary can temporarily authorize transactions to protect the company's interests.””

Richard took the document.

He scanned the paragraph.

His expression changed.

“This isn't the version I signed.””

Evelyn looked surprised.

“Excuse me?””

Richard turned the page.

“My original agreement did not contain this clause.””

Evelyn folded her arms.

“Perhaps you're remembering the preliminary draft.””

“No.””

“Richard, you were reviewing dozens of documents that week.””

“I remember exactly what I signed.””

He looked toward Michael.

“Get our external legal counsel on the phone.””

Evelyn's voice sharpened.

“There's no need to involve outside counsel.””

Richard looked directly at her.

“That's not your decision.””

For the first time, Evelyn appeared genuinely irritated.

“You're letting an emotional family situation interfere with corporate governance.””

Richard stepped closer.

“My daughter was assaulted in my building. Someone forged her signature. Money was moved out of her trust. And you expect me to remain calm because you have a board meeting?””

Evelyn's eyes flicked toward Danielle.

“Perhaps we should consider whether Danielle understands the responsibilities attached to this trust.””

Danielle slowly rose.

“I'm sorry?””

Evelyn gave a thin smile.

“You have a young child. You're dealing with a difficult personal situation. Perhaps the trust was never appropriate for you to manage.””

Richard's voice cut through the lobby.

“Don't speak about my daughter that way.””

Evelyn closed her folder.

“I'm simply being practical.””

“No. You're attempting to make my daughter sound incapable of protecting her own interests.””

Richard turned toward Michael.

“Call the emergency board meeting.””

Michael nodded.

“Now?””

“Now.””

Evelyn's face changed.

“Richard, you cannot convene an emergency meeting without proper notice.””

“I can when the company's governing documents allow it.””

He looked toward the elevators.

“And I intend to use every authority available to me.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You'll regret this.””

Richard stared at her.

“That's the first honest thing you've said today.””

A phone began ringing.

It was Victoria's.

She glanced at the screen.

Her fingers trembled.

Brian noticed.

“Who is it?””

Victoria turned away.

“None of your business.””

But Danielle had already seen the message appearing on the screen.

*DON'T LET HIM SEE THE SECOND FILE.*

Danielle looked at her father.

“Dad?””

Richard followed her gaze.

Victoria quickly locked her phone.

“What second file?”” Danielle asked.

Victoria said nothing.

Richard held out his hand.

“Ms. Hale. Give me your phone.””

“You have no right to take my personal property.””

“I haven't asked to take it. I'm asking you to preserve any communication relating to this incident.””

Victoria shook her head.

“This is harassment.””

Then Evelyn stepped between them.

“Richard, perhaps you should remember that you don't control every person in this company.””

Richard looked at her.

“No. But I do control who has access to my daughter's trust.””

Evelyn's expression finally cracked.

And Danielle realized something.

The woman in the navy suit wasn't afraid of the investigation.

May you like

She was afraid of what might be inside the second file.

Because whatever it contained, it was powerful enough to make two senior employees risk everything to keep it hidden.
