Chapter 5: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to See

The emergency board meeting began at 1:15 p.m.

But nobody went upstairs.

Richard ordered the conference room on the ground floor opened and instructed corporate security to secure the entrance.

Danielle sat near the back with Lily asleep in her arms.

A nurse had given her an ice pack for her cheek.

She still looked shaken.

Richard had wanted to send her home.

She refused.

“Dad, someone used my name to steal money,” she had told him.

“I'm not leaving until I understand what happened.””

He hadn't argued.

Now the board members were arriving one by one.

Some looked confused.

Others looked nervous.

And a few seemed to know exactly why they had been summoned.

Evelyn entered last.

She carried the same leather folder.

Victoria followed her.

Brian was escorted in by corporate security, while Emily was asked to provide her recorded statement.

Richard stood at the head of the table.

“Thank you for coming.””

A man with silver-rimmed glasses leaned back.

“Richard, this had better be important. We were told there was an incident involving building security.””

“There was.””

Richard placed a printed photograph on the table.

It showed Danielle sitting on the lobby floor, protecting Lily.

The room went silent.

“This is my daughter,” Richard said.

“And this is my granddaughter.””

Several board members exchanged glances.

Richard continued.

“Earlier today, my daughter was slapped by our building manager while holding her newborn. She was then ordered to leave the property.””

One board member frowned.

“That's unacceptable.””

Another looked toward Evelyn.

“Has security confirmed the incident?””

“Yes,” Richard replied.

“We have video evidence.””

Victoria shifted in her chair.

Evelyn remained still.

Richard pressed a button on the conference room screen.

The footage appeared.

The lobby came into view.

Danielle entered carrying her baby.

She approached the reception desk.

Victoria appeared from the side.

Then the argument began.

The board members watched as Victoria raised her hand.

The slap was unmistakable.

Danielle stumbled and fell.

Lily cried.

Nobody spoke.

The recording continued.

Brian approached.

“You need to leave the building.””

Victoria added:

“This lobby isn't for walk-ins.””

Then came Danielle's phone call.

“Dad, they hit me and they're forcing us out.””

A man's voice answered.

“I'm coming downstairs. Stay there.””

The footage showed Danielle wiping her tears.

Then the final moments.

Richard entered.

Victoria froze.

The video stopped.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the ventilation system.

Finally, the silver-haired board member spoke.

“Victoria, do you have an explanation?””

Victoria folded her hands.

“I made a mistake in judgment.””

Richard looked at her.

“A mistake?””

“I was attempting to enforce visitor policies.””

“You slapped a woman.””

“I understand how it looks.””

Richard leaned forward.

“How it looks?””

Victoria's face reddened.

“I was under considerable pressure. We had received instructions concerning unauthorized visitors.””

Richard turned toward Evelyn.

“From whom?””

Evelyn remained composed.

“The building management department receives security advisories regularly.””

Richard nodded.

“Then let's discuss the advisory.””

Michael connected his laptop to the screen.

A document appeared.

It contained Danielle's photograph, her full name, and a description of her expected arrival.

Beneath it was a warning.

*DO NOT PERMIT DANIELLE BROOKS TO ACCESS THE EXECUTIVE FLOOR OR CONTACT RICHARD WHITMORE.*

The room erupted in whispers.

A board member leaned forward.

“Who authorized this?””

Michael enlarged the document.

At the bottom was an electronic approval code.

Richard looked toward Evelyn.

“Your credentials.””

Evelyn didn't blink.

“Someone could have accessed my account.””

“Then we'll investigate that possibility.””

Richard turned toward Victoria.

“Who gave you the instruction?””

Victoria swallowed.

“I received it from corporate administration.””

“Who specifically?””

She looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn stared back.

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then Brian spoke.

“Ms. Hale received a call from Evelyn's office yesterday.””

Evelyn turned sharply.

“That's a lie.””

Brian shook his head.

“I heard it.””

“You weren't part of that conversation.””

“I was outside the office.””

Evelyn's voice rose.

“You're a security assistant. You don't understand executive communications.””

Brian looked down at the table.

“I understand what I heard.””

Richard motioned for him to continue.

Brian took a breath.

“She said the woman must not reach Mr. Whitmore. She said there would be consequences if we allowed her upstairs.””

Victoria's face tightened.

Richard looked at her.

“Is that true?””

Victoria didn't answer.

“Ms. Hale?””

She finally spoke.

“Yes.””

The room fell silent.

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Victoria looked toward Evelyn.

“Because I was told Danielle was attempting to interfere with a sensitive financial arrangement.””

Danielle leaned forward.

“What arrangement?””

Victoria glanced at her.

“The trust.””

Richard placed both hands on the table.

“Explain.””

Victoria swallowed.

“I was told that your daughter might attempt to access confidential trust records. I was instructed to prevent that from happening.””

Danielle stared at her.

“I came here to introduce you to my daughter.””

Victoria looked away.

Richard turned toward Evelyn.

“Did you tell her my daughter was a security threat?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Victoria suddenly laughed bitterly.

“Really?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Be careful.””

Victoria reached into her handbag.

“I've been careful for eighteen months.””

She removed her phone and placed it on the table.

Richard watched.

“What is that?””

“Messages.””

Evelyn's expression changed.

“Victoria, don't.””

Victoria unlocked her phone.

“I have emails, voice notes, and payment instructions.””

Evelyn stood.

“Those communications are confidential.””

Victoria looked up.

“Not anymore.””

She connected the phone to the room's display.

A series of messages appeared.

The first was dated eighteen months earlier.

*Evelyn:* Keep the Whitmore family office away from the building accounts. We don't want unnecessary questions.

The next message was more recent.

*Evelyn:* If Danielle arrives, make sure she doesn't reach Richard. We need the trust documents finalized first.

Danielle covered her mouth.

Richard stared at the screen.

“Finalized?””

Victoria scrolled.

Another message appeared.

*Evelyn:* The second authorization must be completed before the end of the month. Once the transfer is complete, the beneficiary will have no practical way to reverse it.

A board member stood.

“What transfer?””

Victoria looked at Richard.

“That's what I was trying to tell you.””

Richard's voice was low.

“How much?””

Victoria hesitated.

Then she enlarged the transaction summary.

The amount appeared.

<badge color="danger">CONFIDENTIAL FINANCIAL RECORD</badge>

*$18,750,000.*

Danielle's breath caught.

“Eighteen million?””

Richard stared at the number.

The trust had been established to protect Danielle and Lily.

Someone had moved nearly nineteen million dollars out of it.

And according to the messages, another transfer was planned.

The silver-haired board member looked at Evelyn.

“Are these messages authentic?””

Evelyn closed her folder.

“I will not comment on documents obtained through unauthorized access.””

Richard nodded.

“That's fine. The independent investigators can verify them.””

Evelyn turned toward the board.

“This is becoming absurd. Richard has a personal conflict, and now we're allowing an employee facing disciplinary action to dictate corporate policy.””

Victoria's face twisted.

“I'm not the one who stole eighteen million dollars.””

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“Then explain the second transfer!””

Evelyn said nothing.

Richard looked at Michael.

“Have the banks been notified?””

“Yes, sir. The family office has requested an immediate freeze on the remaining trust accounts.””

“Good.””

A board member raised his hand.

“Richard, we need to discuss temporary measures. If senior personnel are implicated, we cannot simply continue operations as usual.””

Richard nodded.

“Agreed.””

He turned toward Evelyn.

“Effective immediately, you are suspended from all trust-related administrative access pending an independent investigation.””

Evelyn laughed.

“You cannot suspend me.””

“I'm the controlling shareholder.””

“The board has authority over corporate governance.””

“And the board will vote.””

Richard looked around the room.

“Those in favor of suspending Evelyn Shaw from her executive duties pending investigation?””

One hand rose.

Then another.

Then three more.

Evelyn looked around in disbelief.

Victoria stared at the table.

Brian finally exhaled.

The vote passed.

Richard turned to security.

“Please escort Ms. Shaw to the administrative office. She may contact her legal counsel.””

Evelyn gathered her folder.

She looked at Danielle.

“You have no idea what you've started.””

Danielle met her eyes.

“Neither do you.””

Evelyn stopped.

For the first time, she looked directly at Lily.

Then she walked out.

But the meeting wasn't over.

Michael approached Richard with a fresh printout.

“Sir, the bank has confirmed that the first transfer went to an account registered under a holding company.””

Richard examined the page.

“What holding company?””

Michael hesitated.

“It's called Whitmore Legacy Partners.””

Richard frowned.

“That company was dissolved years ago.””

“That's the problem, sir.””

Michael pointed to the account's beneficial owner.

The name appeared in bold.

*DANIELLE MARIE BROOKS.*

Danielle shook her head.

“I've never heard of that company.””

Richard looked at her.

“I believe you.””

Michael continued.

“There's another issue. The account was established using identity documents submitted in your daughter's name.””

Richard's expression darkened.

“Who submitted them?””

Michael lowered his voice.

“We traced the upload to a device registered to the family office.””

Richard stared at him.

“Whose device?””

Michael looked toward the conference room door.

“Your wife's old office.””

Richard went completely still.

His wife had been dead for four years.

May you like

And nobody had used that office since her funeral.

Until now.
