Chapter 2: The Owner's Daughter

Richard Brooks had spent thirty-two years building his business.

He had started with a small catering company, one borrowed delivery van, and a kitchen that was barely large enough for three people.

He had worked holidays, missed birthdays, and slept in his office more nights than he cared to remember.

Eventually, he bought his first event property.

Then another.

Then another.

The Whitmore Grand Ballroom was his most prestigious investment.

It had imported Italian marble, crystal chandeliers, gold-trimmed doors, and a ballroom large enough to accommodate six hundred guests.

People traveled from different states to hold their weddings there.

Celebrities had attended private events inside its walls.

Politicians had hosted fundraisers in its banquet rooms.

But Richard had always maintained one rule.

No employee was permitted to humiliate another human being under his roof.

Apparently, Vanessa Whitmore had forgotten that rule.

"Mr. Brooks," Christopher stammered.

Richard didn't acknowledge him.

He walked directly toward Danielle.

"Baby.""

Danielle's lower lip trembled.

"Dad.""

Richard reached for her carefully, placing one hand against her shoulder while keeping his movements slow so he wouldn't disturb the newborn.

"Let me see you.""

"I'm okay.""

He examined her cheek.

A red mark was already forming along her jaw.

Richard's expression tightened.

"You're not okay.""

Danielle looked down.

"I didn't want to cause a scene.""

Richard stared at her.

"Someone hit you while you were holding my grandson. You're not the person who caused this scene.""

He gently touched the baby's blanket.

"Is he hurt?""

"No. I protected his head.""

Richard nodded, visibly fighting his anger.

"Good girl.""

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"Mr. Brooks, thank goodness you're here. We have a situation.""

Richard slowly turned.

"A situation?""

"Yes. This woman entered without authorization. She became aggressive when I asked for identification, and then she started making threats.""

Danielle looked up.

"That's not what happened.""

Vanessa ignored her.

"She was disturbing the wedding guests. Christopher witnessed everything.""

Christopher's eyes moved nervously between the two women.

Richard studied Vanessa.

"Did you just say this woman entered without authorization?""

"Yes.""

"What's her name?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Danielle, apparently.""

Richard looked at his daughter.

"Apparently?""

Danielle wiped her cheek.

"She never asked.""

Richard turned back.

"How long have you been managing this venue?""

"Six years.""

"And you've never seen my daughter?""

Vanessa forced a nervous smile.

"Mr. Brooks, with all due respect, I don't know every person who walks through these doors.""

Richard nodded slowly.

"That's understandable.""

Vanessa appeared relieved.

Then he continued.

"But you should know the people you put your hands on.""

The guests standing nearby exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Vanessa's face reddened.

"I did not assault anybody.""

Danielle stared at her.

"You slapped me.""

"Because you were refusing to cooperate.""

"While I was holding my baby?""

Vanessa threw her hands up.

"Oh, please. I barely touched you.""

Richard looked toward the security officers.

"Did anyone record what happened?""

One of the officers, a broad-shouldered man named Marcus, stepped forward.

"Mr. Brooks, the entrance cameras cover the entire foyer. We also have security footage from the reception desk.""

Richard nodded.

"Preserve everything.""

Vanessa quickly interrupted.

"There's no need to make this bigger than it is.""

Richard turned his head.

"You're right.""

Vanessa relaxed.

"It was a misunderstanding," she said quickly.

"I was simply enforcing the venue's security policy.""

Richard looked at the red mark on Danielle's face.

"Then let's understand it properly.""

He extended his hand toward the woman carrying the leather folder.

"Angela, please.""

Angela Price was the company's regional operations director. She had worked with Richard for eleven years and knew the difference between an ordinary complaint and a serious incident.

She opened the folder.

"Mr. Brooks, the original guest list is here, along with the event authorization documents.""

Vanessa frowned.

"Why would you bring those?""

Angela didn't answer.

Richard looked at his daughter.

"Danielle, why didn't you tell me you were coming?""

Danielle gave a small, embarrassed smile.

"I wanted to surprise you.""

"Surprise me?""

She nodded.

"I thought I'd arrive early, help with the family preparations, and introduce you to your grandson properly.""

Richard looked at the sleeping baby.

For a moment, the anger disappeared from his face.

"You brought my grandson here to meet me?""

"Yes.""

He leaned closer.

"What's his name again?""

Danielle smiled faintly.

"Elijah.""

Richard repeated it softly.

"Elijah.""

He touched the baby's tiny hand.

"Hello, little man. I'm your grandfather.""

The baby opened his eyes briefly.

Richard laughed under his breath.

Then he looked at Danielle.

"Why didn't you call me when you first arrived?""

"I thought the staff might recognize my name. When they didn't, I didn't want to make a fuss.""

Richard looked toward Vanessa.

"Well, they certainly made a fuss.""

A few guests lowered their phones.

One woman in a silver dress whispered to her husband.

"That's the owner's daughter?""

Her husband nodded.

"I think so.""

Vanessa heard them.

Her eyes widened.

She suddenly straightened her dress.

"Mr. Brooks, I sincerely apologize if there was some confusion about her identity.""

Richard stared at her.

"Her identity?""

"Yes. Had I known she was your daughter, I would never have—"

Richard raised one hand.

"Stop.""

Vanessa's mouth closed.

He stepped closer.

"Let me ask you something. If she had been the daughter of a janitor, would you have had the right to slap her?""

Vanessa looked away.

"That's not what I meant.""

"Would you have been allowed to humiliate her because she wasn't wearing a designer dress?""

"I was following procedure.""

"Would you have treated her differently if she had arrived wearing a thousand-dollar handbag?""

Vanessa said nothing.

Richard nodded.

"That's what I thought.""

Christopher stepped forward.

"Mr. Brooks, I would like to explain my role in this.""

Richard turned toward him.

"Go ahead.""

Christopher swallowed.

"Vanessa instructed me to remove the guest from the property. I was only trying to maintain order.""

Danielle looked at him.

"You watched her hit me.""

Christopher lowered his eyes.

"I didn't know what to do.""

"You knew enough to tell me to leave.""

He had no answer.

Richard glanced at the security officer.

"Marcus, please make sure no one deletes or alters the footage.""

"Understood, sir.""

Vanessa looked increasingly uncomfortable.

"Mr. Brooks, the wedding is scheduled to begin in twenty minutes. We have hundreds of guests. Surely we can discuss this privately.""

Richard glanced toward the ballroom.

He could hear the musicians rehearsing inside.

The wedding was a major event.

Vanessa had spent weeks preparing it.

And now she was beginning to understand that the most important person in the building was not the bride, the groom, or the wealthy guests.

It was the man standing in front of her.

Richard looked at Angela.

"Who booked tonight's wedding?""

Angela opened another document.

"The Whitmore family. The bride is Victoria Whitmore.""

Vanessa quickly nodded.

"My daughter.""

Richard looked at her.

"Your daughter is getting married here tonight?""

"Yes.""

"And you've been managing her wedding arrangements personally?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Of course.""

Richard glanced at Danielle.

Then at the baby.

Then back at Vanessa.

"Interesting.""

Angela quietly leaned toward him.

"Sir, there's something else you should know.""

Richard turned.

"What?""

Angela opened the folder to a marked page.

"The original event contract includes a specific family-access authorization.""

Vanessa's face changed.

Richard looked at the document.

Then he looked at Vanessa again.

"Read the name on that authorization.""

Angela did.

"Danielle Brooks.""

A long silence followed.

Vanessa's lips parted.

Richard folded his arms.

"Now, Vanessa, I want to know why you struck a woman whose name was already on the authorization list.""

Vanessa took a step backward.

But before she could answer, a woman's voice came from the ballroom entrance.

"Mom?""

Everyone turned.

A beautiful young bride stood beneath the chandelier.

Victoria Whitmore was wearing a white satin wedding gown, her hair pinned into an elegant updo.

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at Richard.

Then at Danielle's swollen cheek.

Her expression changed.

"Mom," she whispered, "what did you do?""

Vanessa's face drained of color.

May you like

Because Victoria had just recognized the woman holding the newborn.

And she knew exactly who Danielle was.
