Chapter 3: The Bride Knew the Truth
Victoria Whitmore hurried across the marble foyer.
Her wedding gown swept behind her as she approached Danielle.
"Danielle?""
Danielle looked up.
"Hi, Victoria.""
Victoria stopped.
Her eyes moved to the red mark on Danielle's cheek.
Then to the newborn wrapped in white.
"Oh my God.""
She reached for Danielle's free hand.
"What happened to your face?""
Danielle glanced at Vanessa.
"Your mother happened.""
Victoria slowly turned.
"Mom?""
Vanessa immediately began shaking her head.
"Victoria, sweetheart, don't start. There has been a misunderstanding.""
Victoria looked back at Danielle.
"Did she hit you?""
Danielle didn't answer immediately.
She adjusted Elijah's blanket.
Then she nodded.
"Yes.""
Victoria's face went pale.
"While you were holding the baby?""
"Yes.""
Victoria looked at her mother as if she were seeing a stranger.
"Why would you do that?""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"She was trying to enter a private wedding without an invitation.""
Victoria stared at her.
"Mom, Danielle has an invitation.""
Vanessa blinked.
"What?""
"Danielle Brooks. She's on the family guest list.""
Vanessa looked toward Christopher.
He immediately looked down.
Victoria continued.
"She's also supposed to sit with my family. I specifically requested that.""
Richard turned toward Angela.
"Is that correct?""
Angela checked the document.
"Yes, sir. The bride personally requested that Danielle and her newborn be seated at the family table.""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Victoria looked increasingly upset.
"Mom, I told you about Danielle weeks ago.""
Vanessa tried to recover.
"I manage hundreds of guests. I can't memorize everyone's names.""
Victoria shook her head.
"She's not just anyone.""
Danielle looked uncomfortable.
"Victoria, it's okay.""
"No, it's not.""
Victoria turned toward the guests.
"My mother just assaulted someone I personally invited to my wedding.""
The foyer fell silent.
A man near the staircase slowly lowered his champagne glass.
The woman in the silver dress stopped whispering.
Vanessa reached for her daughter's arm.
"Victoria, please. You're about to get married. Don't embarrass yourself.""
Victoria pulled away.
"You're worried about embarrassment?""
She pointed toward Danielle.
"Look at her face!""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Keep your voice down.""
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"You slapped a mother holding a newborn in front of two hundred people, and now you're telling me to keep my voice down?""
Richard watched quietly.
He wanted to know how much Victoria knew.
He also wanted to see whether Vanessa would finally take responsibility.
But Vanessa had one more excuse.
"She should have identified herself.""
Victoria stared at her mother.
"She did.""
"She didn't provide proper identification.""
"Mom, I sent you her photograph.""
Vanessa froze.
Victoria pulled out her phone.
"Remember? Three weeks ago? I sent you a message saying my father's daughter Danielle was coming with her baby.""
Vanessa looked at the phone.
Then away.
Victoria opened the conversation.
She read aloud.
"Mom, please make sure Danielle Brooks and baby Elijah are welcomed at the main entrance. She's family. Dad is especially excited to meet his grandson.""
Danielle looked at Richard.
He had never mentioned receiving that message.
Victoria continued.
"You replied, 'Of course, sweetheart. I'll personally make sure everything is perfect.''"
Vanessa's cheeks flushed.
"That was before I knew what she looked like.""
Victoria stared at her.
"What does that even mean?""
Vanessa glanced at Danielle's beige dress.
"Look at the way she arrived.""
Danielle's expression hardened.
"My dress?""
Vanessa sighed.
"I simply wasn't expecting someone dressed like—"
"Finish that sentence," Richard interrupted.
Vanessa stopped.
Richard took one slow step forward.
"Go ahead. Finish it.""
Nobody moved.
Danielle felt Elijah shifting against her chest.
She gently rocked him.
"Please, Dad. I don't want the baby around all this.""
Richard looked at her.
"You're right.""
He turned toward Marcus.
"Please bring a chair for my daughter. And have someone bring her a glass of water.""
Marcus immediately moved.
Victoria helped Danielle sit down.
"Are you sure you're okay?""
Danielle nodded.
"I'm just tired.""
Victoria looked at the baby.
"He's beautiful.""
"Thank you.""
"How old is he now?""
"Three weeks.""
Victoria smiled sadly.
"I wish we'd had more time together before today.""
Danielle gave a small laugh.
"Life has been a little complicated.""
Richard pulled a chair closer and sat beside his daughter.
For a few seconds, the foyer became quieter.
Then Victoria spoke again.
"Danielle, can I ask you something?""
"Of course.""
"Did you come alone?""
Danielle nodded.
"Yes. I was going to surprise Dad.""
Victoria looked confused.
"Where's your husband?""
The question landed heavily.
Danielle's eyes dropped to Elijah.
"He left.""
Victoria's expression softened.
"When?""
"Two weeks before the baby was born.""
Richard's jaw tightened.
Danielle continued.
"He said he wasn't ready to be a father. He packed his things, took his car, and stopped answering my calls.""
Victoria reached for her hand.
"I'm so sorry.""
Danielle shrugged.
"I've been managing.""
Richard looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I didn't want you worrying.""
"Danielle, you're my daughter. Worrying about you is part of being your father.""
She gave him a tired smile.
"I know.""
Victoria glanced toward her mother.
Then she looked back at Danielle.
"Mom knew about the baby, didn't she?""
Danielle nodded.
"She knew I was coming.""
Victoria closed her eyes briefly.
"Unbelievable.""
Vanessa had been standing near the reception desk, watching the conversation with growing irritation.
She suddenly stepped forward.
"All right. This has gone far enough.""
Richard looked at her.
"Has it?""
"Yes. My daughter has a wedding to finish preparing. I have a venue to manage. I have no intention of letting one unfortunate misunderstanding ruin the entire evening.""
Victoria turned sharply.
"One unfortunate misunderstanding?""
Vanessa ignored her.
"Mr. Brooks, I'm willing to offer Danielle an apology and complimentary refreshments. We can arrange a private seating area away from the main entrance.""
Danielle stared at her.
"A private seating area?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Somewhere quieter. Away from the guests.""
Richard's expression became cold.
"You're still trying to move her out of sight?""
"I'm trying to find a solution.""
"No. You're trying to hide what you did.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"With respect, Mr. Brooks, I have a reputation to protect.""
Richard looked around the luxurious foyer.
Then he gestured toward the guests.
"Look at these people. They watched you hit a woman holding a newborn. Some laughed.
Some recorded it. Some looked away.""
He paused.
"And you're worried about your reputation?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
But Danielle noticed something.
Vanessa wasn't looking at her.
She was looking at the guests and checking who had their phones out.
Then she leaned toward Richard.
"Perhaps we can discuss compensation privately.""
Richard stared at her.
"Compensation?""
Vanessa nodded.
"I understand the situation looks bad. I would hate for an incident like this to affect the company.""
Richard said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
"I'm sure we can come to an arrangement.""
Victoria looked horrified.
"Mom, stop talking.""
Vanessa turned.
"Victoria, stay out of this.""
"It's my wedding!""
"And I'm the person managing it!""
Richard slowly stood.
"Not anymore.""
Vanessa blinked.
"What?""
Richard turned toward Angela.
"Please suspend Vanessa's access to all management systems pending a full investigation. Preserve every security recording, guest communication, and staff report from today.""
Angela nodded.
"Understood.""
Vanessa's face changed.
"You're suspending me?""
Richard continued.
"Christopher will also be removed from the floor until we establish exactly what happened.""
Christopher looked terrified.
"Mr. Brooks, please. I have a family.""
Richard turned toward him.
"Then you should have remembered that my daughter has one too.""
Christopher lowered his head.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You cannot do this in front of everyone!""
Richard looked at her.
"I can do it anywhere I choose. I own this building.""
A hush spread through the foyer.
Then Victoria took Danielle's hand.
"Come with me.""
Danielle looked confused.
"Where?""
Victoria glanced toward the ballroom.
"You're sitting beside me at the family table.""
Vanessa immediately objected.
"Absolutely not.""
Victoria turned.
"You're not deciding who sits beside me anymore.""
She looked at Danielle.
"You're family.""
Danielle's eyes filled again.
For the first time since entering the venue, someone had made her feel welcome.
But before she could answer, a deep male voice came from behind the crowd.
"Richard?""
Everyone turned.
A tall man in a navy tuxedo stood near the ballroom entrance.
It was James Whitmore, Victoria's father and Vanessa's husband.
He had just arrived from the private preparation suite.
His eyes moved from the security officers to the bride, then to Vanessa.
Finally, he saw Danielle sitting beside Richard.
His expression changed instantly.
"Danielle?""
Richard turned toward him.
"James. We need to talk.""
James looked at the mark on Danielle's face.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
His voice dropped.
"Tell me you didn't do what I think you did.""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But James raised one hand.
"No. Don't answer yet.""
He stepped toward Richard and spoke quietly.
"Before you make any decisions about my wife, there's something you need to know.""
Richard narrowed his eyes.
"What could possibly be more important than what happened to my daughter?""
James glanced at Vanessa.
Then he looked directly at Danielle.
"Because the woman who hit your daughter wasn't supposed to be managing this venue tonight.""
Richard went completely still.
"What did you just say?""
James took a breath.
"Vanessa was officially removed from her management position three days ago.""
Danielle looked up.
Victoria gasped.
And Vanessa suddenly shouted:
"JAMES, DON'T YOU DARE!""
But James had already reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
At the top was a company letterhead.
May you like
And beneath it was a signature Richard recognized immediately.
His own.
