Chapter 4: The Document That Changed Everything

Richard stared at the document in James Whitmore's hand.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

The music from the ballroom continued playing softly in the background. Somewhere behind the double doors, a wedding coordinator was reminding guests to take their seats.

But nobody in the foyer seemed to hear it.

Richard finally extended his hand.

"Let me see that.""

James handed him the folded paper.

Richard opened it carefully.

At the top was the official letterhead of Brooks Hospitality Group, the company that owned the Whitmore Grand Ballroom.

Below it was a formal notice dated three days earlier.

*TEMPORARY REMOVAL FROM MANAGEMENT DUTIES — VANESSA WHITMORE.*

Richard read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

His eyebrows drew together.

"Who authorized this?""

James looked uncomfortable.

"You did.""

Richard glanced at the signature.

It was unmistakably his.

But something was wrong.

He had signed dozens of documents that week. His company had been negotiating a major expansion, and his executive team regularly prepared paperwork for his approval.

Still, he didn't remember authorizing Vanessa's removal.

"Angela," he called.

The operations director stepped forward.

"Yes, sir?""

"Did you prepare this document?""

Angela took the paper and examined it.

Her expression changed.

"No, Mr. Brooks.""

"Are you certain?""

"Absolutely. This isn't our standard termination or suspension format.""

James crossed his arms.

"It came through the regional office.""

Angela shook her head.

"No. It didn't.""

Vanessa suddenly stepped between them.

"Can we stop pretending this is some corporate mystery? James was handling an internal personnel matter.""

Richard looked at her.

"Then why were you managing my venue tonight?""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"Because I was told the removal was temporary.""

James let out a bitter laugh.

"Temporary? Vanessa, you were instructed not to enter the management offices.""

"That was your interpretation.""

"It was written in the notice.""

"You don't get to control my career!""

James stared at her.

"My career? I'm not the one who falsified documents.""

The word hit the foyer like another slap.

Danielle shifted in her chair.

Richard noticed.

He immediately moved closer to his daughter.

"Are you comfortable?""

She nodded.

"Yes, Dad.""

He turned back to James.

"Explain everything. From the beginning.""

James glanced at Victoria.

His daughter was standing beside Danielle, still holding her hand.

"Three days ago, I received a call from the corporate office," James began.

"They informed me that Vanessa's access to the venue was being reviewed because of irregularities in the financial records.""

Vanessa laughed sharply.

"That's ridiculous.""

James continued.

"Several vendor payments had been redirected. Some invoices didn't match the services provided. There were also unexplained transfers from the wedding deposits account.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"How much money?""

James hesitated.

"Approximately four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""

A woman near the staircase gasped.

Vanessa immediately raised her voice.

"Those were legitimate operational expenses!""

Angela stepped forward.

"Then you won't mind explaining why several payments were sent to a company that doesn't appear in our approved vendor database.""

Vanessa looked at her.

"What company?""

Angela opened her tablet.

"Whitmore Event Solutions.""

James closed his eyes.

Richard looked at Vanessa.

"Is that your company?""

Vanessa said nothing.

James answered.

"Yes. It was registered under her name eight months ago.""

Victoria stared at her mother.

"You started another company?""

Vanessa snapped.

"It's a consulting business.""

"Using money from this venue?""

"Don't be naive, Victoria.""

Richard raised his hand.

"Enough.""

He turned to Angela.

"I want a complete audit. Every payment. Every vendor. Every account connected to this company.""

Angela nodded.

"I'll contact the forensic accounting team immediately.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"This is outrageous. You're allowing a personal family incident to turn into a corporate witch hunt.""

Richard looked at her.

"You're the one who brought corporate business into a wedding foyer.""

He held up the document.

"And now we're going to find out who created this.""

James stepped closer.

"There is something else.""

Richard looked at him.

"What?""

James glanced toward the bride.

"Victoria found out about the missing money yesterday. She asked me to investigate before the wedding.""

Victoria nodded.

"I didn't want to ruin the day. I just wanted to know why Mom was transferring money without telling Dad.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

"You went through my private files?""

"I saw the bank statements you left on the kitchen counter.""

"They were confidential.""

"They were addressed to a company using our family name!""

James looked at Richard.

"That's when I found the removal notice. I assumed corporate had already taken action.""

Richard studied the document again.

He recognized the signature.

But he didn't recognize the authorization number.

He handed it back to Angela.

"Verify this immediately.""

"Yes, sir.""

Vanessa began backing toward the ballroom.

"Fine. Investigate whatever you want. But I'm leaving.""

Two security officers moved into her path.

Richard's voice remained calm.

"Nobody is detaining you. But you are not leaving with company documents, equipment, or access credentials.""

Vanessa glared at him.

"You're treating me like a criminal.""

Richard looked at Danielle.

"No. I'm treating you like someone who needs to answer serious questions.""

For the first time, Vanessa appeared genuinely afraid.

But she quickly changed tactics.

She turned toward Victoria.

"Sweetheart, please. Tell them this is getting out of control.""

Victoria didn't move.

"Mom, you hit Danielle.""

"I was under pressure!""

"You hit a mother holding a newborn.""

"She should have explained who she was!""

Victoria shook her head.

"She shouldn't have needed to.""

Vanessa looked at James.

"You're really going to let strangers destroy our family?""

James's expression softened for just a moment.

"We destroyed it when we stopped telling each other the truth.""

Vanessa looked away.

Then she did something nobody expected.

She pointed at Danielle.

"Ask her why she came here.""

Danielle frowned.

"What?""

"Ask her what she really wanted from Richard.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Be careful.""

Vanessa ignored him.

"She hasn't spoken to this family in years. Suddenly she appears with a baby, claims she's been abandoned by her husband, and expects everyone to welcome her.""

Danielle's face tightened.

"I didn't ask anyone for money.""

"You expect us to believe that?""

"Mom," Victoria whispered.

Vanessa continued.

"Perhaps this was planned. Perhaps she knew the wedding would be full of wealthy people.""

Richard's voice dropped.

"That's enough.""

But Vanessa had already gone too far.

Danielle stood slowly, holding Elijah securely.

"My husband left me before my son was born. I spent three weeks trying to figure out how to pay my rent and buy formula. I came here because I wanted my father to meet his grandson.""

Her voice shook.

"Not because I wanted your money.""

She looked directly at Vanessa.

"And even if I had come here wearing the cheapest clothes in America, you still had no right to touch me.""

Nobody spoke.

Richard gently guided Danielle back into her chair.

"That's my daughter," he said quietly.

Then his phone vibrated.

Angela checked hers at almost the same moment.

She looked at Richard.

"Sir, the document verification just came through.""

Richard turned.

"What did they find?""

Angela swallowed.

"The signature is genuine. But the digital authorization attached to it was generated using an executive account that should have been disabled months ago.""

Richard frowned.

"Whose account?""

Angela looked at Vanessa.

Then at James.

"Your former chief financial officer's.""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Daniel Mercer?""

Angela nodded.

"Yes.""

Richard went completely still.

Daniel Mercer had been his closest financial adviser for fourteen years.

He had attended family dinners, birthdays, and company celebrations.

He had been the person Richard trusted to handle sensitive transactions.

And six months earlier, he had resigned unexpectedly.

Richard looked at the document again.

"Find him.""

Angela lowered her voice.

"Sir, there's a problem.""

"What?""

"Daniel Mercer is currently listed as a paid consultant for Whitmore Event Solutions.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

James whispered something under his breath.

Richard looked directly at her.

"How long have you been working with him?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Then Angela's tablet chimed.

She examined the screen and slowly raised her eyes.

"Mr. Brooks, we just received an email from the company's external auditor.""

Richard waited.

Angela looked at Vanessa.

"The auditor says the four hundred and eighty thousand dollars is only part of the missing money.""

She paused.

"The actual amount may exceed two million.""

May you like

And attached to the email was a list of forty-seven transactions.

Every single one had been approved using Richard's executive credentials.
