Chapter 9: The Mother Who Disappeared

Nobody moved.

Danielle stared at the woman standing beneath the chandelier.

The resemblance was undeniable.

The same heart-shaped face.

The same delicate nose.

Even the same way of pressing her lips together when she was trying not to cry.

But Danielle couldn't understand what she was seeing.

Her biological mother was supposed to have disappeared when she was four.

The woman in front of her was supposed to be a painful memory buried beneath decades of family explanations.

Yet here she was.

Alive.

And calling Danielle's newborn her grandson.

"Don't come closer," Danielle whispered.

Evelyn stopped immediately.

"Sweetheart...""

"Don't call me that.""

Evelyn's eyes filled.

Richard moved toward her.

"What are you doing here?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"I came to see my daughter.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"You've had twenty-seven years to do that.""

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"I know.""

Danielle looked at her father.

"You told me she was gone.""

Richard shook his head.

"I told you she couldn't safely care for you.""

"That's not the same thing.""

"No. It isn't.""

Evelyn took a small step forward.

Danielle immediately pulled Elijah closer.

"Why are you here?""

Evelyn looked at the baby.

"I wanted to meet him.""

"How did you know about him?""

Evelyn glanced toward Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

That was the first thing Danielle noticed.

The second was that Evelyn seemed frightened of him.

Richard noticed it too.

"Angela, have security close the entrance.""

Angela nodded.

Evelyn raised her hands.

"Please. I didn't come here to cause trouble.""

Danielle laughed bitterly.

"Then why does everyone who walks into this building bring another secret?""

Evelyn lowered her head.

"I deserve that.""

Richard looked at her.

"Tell us what happened to the trust.""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"Richard, this is a family matter.""

Richard turned.

"No. The trust was created for my niece. Twelve million dollars disappeared. That makes it a financial matter.""

Evelyn looked at Danielle.

"Your father established the trust before he died. He wanted to make sure you would never have to struggle.""

Danielle's voice trembled.

"Then where is it?""

Evelyn opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"I have some of the original documents.""

Daniel took a step toward her.

"Those papers are confidential.""

Evelyn pulled the envelope closer to her chest.

"They're hers.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Evelyn, think carefully.""

Richard moved between them.

"Don't threaten her.""

Evelyn looked at Danielle.

"Your biological father was named Samuel Brooks. He was a wonderful man. He loved you more than anything.""

Danielle's eyes filled.

"Did he know he was dying?""

Evelyn nodded.

"He knew his illness was serious. Before he passed, he asked Richard to take care of you if anything happened.""

Richard looked down.

"He made me promise.""

Danielle turned toward him.

"And you kept that promise?""

Richard nodded.

"Every day.""

She looked back at Evelyn.

"Then why did you disappear?""

Evelyn began crying.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing you.""

Danielle stared.

"You lost me anyway.""

Evelyn nodded.

"I know.""

She opened the envelope.

Inside were several old legal documents, a photograph, and a letter written in faded blue ink.

Evelyn handed the photograph to Danielle.

It showed a young man holding a little girl.

The little girl had dark curls and a heart-shaped face.

Danielle recognized herself immediately.

The man had a warm smile and his arm wrapped protectively around her.

"That's Samuel," Evelyn whispered.

Danielle touched the photograph.

"That's my father?""

"Yes.""

Her voice broke.

"Why didn't anyone show me this?""

Richard closed his eyes.

"Because we were advised to keep the details private until the legal situation was resolved.""

Evelyn nodded.

"Daniel Mercer told us there were people trying to claim the trust.""

Richard turned sharply.

"Daniel?""

Evelyn looked toward the former executive.

"He was working with the financial administrator at the time. He said the trust was at risk. He convinced me to sign several documents.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That's an outrageous accusation.""

Evelyn continued.

"He told me the money would be protected if I transferred control temporarily.""

Richard stared.

"Why would you give him control of your daughter's inheritance?""

Evelyn wiped her tears.

"Because he told me he could help keep Danielle safe.""

Daniel laughed.

"She's confused.""

Evelyn looked at him.

"You told me she would never know.""

The foyer went silent.

Daniel's expression changed.

Richard stepped closer.

"What did you just say?""

Evelyn looked terrified.

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"She's elderly. She's been under enormous stress.""

Evelyn raised her voice.

"I'm not confused!""

She turned toward Danielle.

"He told me your father had enemies. He said they would take you if they knew how much money you had.""

Danielle stared at her.

"So you signed everything?""

Evelyn nodded.

"At first, I did. Then I realized the documents weren't what he said they were.""

"What happened?""

"He had me sign away control of the trust. When I tried to reverse it, he threatened to expose private information about Samuel.""

Richard looked furious.

"What information?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Daniel said Samuel had made an illegal business arrangement before he died.""

Richard shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel gave a small laugh.

"Are we really going to believe this?""

Evelyn continued.

"He said if I went to the police, Danielle would be investigated too.""

Danielle's stomach tightened.

"Why?""

"Because he told me he could make it appear that you were involved in the financial transactions.""

Danielle looked at the fraudulent bank account on Angela's tablet.

Suddenly, everything connected.

The forged signature.

The fake identity.

The stolen hospital records.

The trust fund.

Daniel hadn't merely stolen money.

He had built an entire trail designed to make Danielle look responsible.

Richard turned toward Marcus.

"Make sure Daniel stays here until the authorities arrive.""

Daniel laughed.

"You're making a mistake.""

Richard didn't blink.

"Perhaps. But I won't make another one by trusting you.""

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

"Tell them.""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Tell them what?""

"Tell them who gave you the original trust documents.""

Vanessa looked frightened.

Richard turned toward her.

"What does he mean?""

Vanessa slowly shook her head.

"I don't have them.""

Daniel smiled.

"Don't lie now.""

James stepped forward.

"Vanessa, what is he talking about?""

She looked at her husband.

Then at Victoria.

Then at Danielle.

Finally, she spoke.

"Daniel gave me a copy of the original trust paperwork last year.""

Richard's expression changed.

"Why?""

"He said it was necessary to complete a financial restructuring.""

Angela shook her head.

"That makes no sense.""

Vanessa's voice became quieter.

"He wanted to know whether Danielle was still the beneficiary.""

Danielle stared.

"Why would you need to know that?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Daniel did.

"Because someone had to confirm whether the trust was still active.""

Richard looked at him.

"You already knew it was active.""

Daniel's smile disappeared.

Richard continued.

"You knew exactly where the money was.""

Daniel stepped backward.

For the first time, the security officers moved closer.

Then Victoria spoke.

"Matthew, did you know about this?""

Everyone turned toward the groom.

Matthew stood near the ballroom doors.

His face was pale.

"I didn't know about the trust.""

Victoria stared at him.

"Did you know your father was using Danielle's identity?""

Matthew looked at Daniel.

His silence was answer enough.

Victoria's eyes filled.

"Matthew...""

He stepped toward her.

"Please let me explain.""

She moved away.

"How long have you known?""

Matthew looked at the floor.

"About six months.""

Victoria covered her mouth.

Danielle looked at him.

"Six months?""

Matthew nodded.

"My father told me there was a problem with an old family account. He said the paperwork was complicated.""

"And you helped him?""

"I didn't understand what was happening.""

Victoria shook her head.

"You registered a company for him.""

Matthew looked devastated.

"I thought I was helping him.""

Richard's voice was cold.

"You're going to need to explain that to the investigators.""

Matthew nodded.

Then he looked at Victoria.

"I know I don't deserve to ask this, but can we talk privately?""

Victoria removed her engagement ring.

She held it in her palm.

Then she placed it on the reception desk.

"Not today.""

Matthew stared at the ring.

"Victoria...""

She shook her head.

"I can't marry someone who knew my family was being destroyed and decided to stay quiet.""

Matthew looked at his father.

For the first time, anger replaced the fear on his face.

"You told me this would never hurt anyone.""

Daniel snapped.

"Be quiet!""

Matthew flinched.

Daniel continued.

"You have no idea what I've sacrificed to protect this family.""

Victoria laughed through her tears.

"Your family? What about Danielle's family?""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Stay out of this.""

Richard stepped forward.

"That's enough.""

Then Evelyn reached into her handbag again.

She removed a second envelope.

This one was sealed.

She handed it to Danielle.

"Your father wrote this for you before he died.""

Danielle's fingers trembled.

"Why are you giving it to me now?""

Evelyn looked at her.

"Because I was told to wait until you had a child.""

Richard frowned.

"Who told you that?""

Evelyn glanced toward the entrance.

"The attorney who managed Samuel's estate.""

Angela looked up.

"Which attorney?""

Evelyn answered.

"Margaret Collins.""

Richard went still.

Margaret Collins was the attorney who had handled his brother's estate.

She was also the person responsible for confirming that the trust remained protected.

Richard took a breath.

"Margaret is retired.""

Evelyn nodded.

"She contacted me last week.""

Danielle looked at the envelope.

"What's in the letter?""

Evelyn swallowed.

"Your father wanted you to know something about the day he died.""

Danielle carefully opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The first line made her heart stop.

*My little girl, if you're reading this, someone has finally told you the truth about the family you were born into.*

She continued reading.

Her father's words described a promise he had made to Richard.

A promise that Danielle would never be forced to inherit the consequences of his business decisions.

Then she reached the final paragraph.

*There is one person I never trusted with your future. He was the last person to visit me before I died. If he ever comes near you, remember this name.*

Danielle's eyes moved to the final line.

*JAMES WHITMORE.*

She slowly raised her head.

James stood beside Richard.

His face had gone completely white.

Victoria looked at her father.

"Dad?""

James took a step backward.

Richard stared at him.

"What does this mean?""

James opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, the main entrance doors opened again.

A uniformed police officer entered with another investigator.

Behind them was an older woman carrying a leather briefcase.

She looked directly at Richard.

"Mr. Brooks?""

Richard nodded.

The woman introduced herself.

"I'm Margaret Collins. I believe it's time I explained what really happened to Samuel.""

Then she looked at James.

"And why his name appears in the original death investigation.""

Danielle tightened her arms around Elijah.

Because the mystery of the missing twelve million dollars had just become something far worse.

May you like

Her biological father's death might not have been an accident.

And the man standing beside her adoptive father might know exactly why.
