Chapter 11: The Last Lie
The message arrived at 8:12 the following morning.
Camille was sitting in a private suite at the Bennett Hospitality headquarters, feeding her newborn while sunlight poured through the windows.
She read the message twice.
Then she handed her phone to Marcus.
He frowned.
“What does he want now?””
“I don't know.””
“Don't answer him.””
Camille looked down at her son.
“I need to hear what he has to say.””
Marcus sighed.
“Camille, he has lied repeatedly.””
“I know.””
“He used your signature.””
“I know.””
“He helped arrange the incident at the hotel.””
“I know, Daddy.””
She looked up.
“But there's something about the night my son was born that I still don't understand.””
Marcus considered her words.
Finally, he nodded.
“We'll arrange a meeting with the attorneys present.””
The meeting took place that afternoon in a private conference room.
Daniel arrived with his lawyer.
He looked exhausted.
His expensive clothes were wrinkled, and dark circles had formed beneath his eyes.
When he saw Camille, he tried to smile.
“Baby.””
She didn't respond.
Daniel sat across from her.
His lawyer placed a folder on the table.
Marcus remained standing near the window.
“Make this quick,” he said.
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.””
He looked at Camille.
“I know you hate me right now.””
Camille's expression didn't change.
“Tell me about the hospital.””
Daniel swallowed.
“The night our son was born, Olivia came to the hospital because I asked her to.””
“Why?””
“I needed her to deliver some paperwork.””
“What paperwork?””
“Documents connected to the trust.””
Camille stared at him.
“You were discussing money while I was giving birth?””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I thought I could finish everything before the baby arrived.””
“And why was Olivia near my room?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She was supposed to bring me a document for you to sign.””
Camille felt her chest tighten.
“You wanted me to sign something in the hospital?””
“It was a consent form.””
“For what?””
Daniel looked at his lawyer.
His lawyer remained silent.
Camille leaned forward.
“Daniel, answer me.””
He exhaled.
“It was supposed to authorize a temporary administrative transfer.””
“You mean the trust?””
“Yes.””
“You wanted me to sign away my voting rights while I was recovering from childbirth?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“I wasn't going to force you.””
“You were going to put a document in front of me while I was exhausted, medicated, and holding our newborn.””
Daniel looked away.
“I thought you would trust me.””
Camille shook her head.
“I did trust you.””
Her voice cracked.
“That's the part you don't understand.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I know I made mistakes.””
“No. You made decisions.””
She looked at him.
“You decided I didn't need to know. You decided my signature belonged to you. You decided my father's company was something you could take. And you decided that our marriage was a convenient way to get there.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“I loved you.””
Camille stared at him.
“Then why did you make me feel like I was just a doorway to my father's money?””
Daniel had no answer.
Marcus finally spoke.
“Tell her about the hospital employee.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
“The person who helped Olivia enter the maternity unit.””
Daniel swallowed.
“It was Nurse Ellis.””
Camille frowned.
“Why would she help?””
“She owed Olivia a favor.””
“What favor?””
Daniel hesitated.
Olivia had told him that Nurse Ellis had previously helped her obtain temporary visitor access for a different patient.
The arrangement had been informal.
Daniel had promised money in exchange for her cooperation.
Camille looked sick.
“You paid someone to get Olivia into my hospital room?””
“She never entered your room.””
“But she was beside my baby's bassinet.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
Camille looked toward Marcus.
He was watching Daniel with barely controlled anger.
Daniel continued.
“Olivia wanted to see the baby.””
“Why?””
“She said she wanted to understand what our life would become.””
Camille stared.
“What does that even mean?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Then he reached into his folder.
He removed a small photograph.
It showed Daniel sitting in a hospital chair beside Camille's bed.
Camille recognized the room.
She remembered that moment.
She had been sleeping after delivery.
The baby was in the bassinet.
Daniel had told her later that he had spent the entire night beside them.
But in the photograph, Olivia was standing behind him.
Her hand rested on his shoulder.
Camille looked at the picture.
“Who took this?””
“Olivia.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“She wanted a photograph of us.””
Camille slowly placed it on the table.
“Us?””
Daniel nodded.
“She thought we would eventually be together.””
Camille stared at him.
“You were sitting beside your wife and newborn while your girlfriend took a photograph of you?””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I was confused.””
Camille shook her head.
“You weren't confused. You were selfish.””
Daniel covered his face.
For several seconds, the room remained silent.
Then he said something that made Camille look up.
“There's another reason Olivia wanted to see the baby.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Thomas had told her that the trust succession clause might be challenged if the primary beneficiary's circumstances changed.””
Evelyn, who had joined the meeting remotely, immediately spoke.
“What circumstances?””
Daniel looked toward the screen.
“He said there was a question about whether Camille's child would eventually become the next beneficiary.””
Evelyn frowned.
“That's not how the trust works.””
“I know that now.””
Camille looked at him.
“Why would Olivia care about my son's inheritance?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because Thomas believed the family trust could be restructured after the birth.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Thomas told you that?””
“Yes.””
“Did he provide evidence?””
Daniel nodded.
“He showed me an old memorandum.””
Evelyn spoke.
“Do you have it?””
Daniel's lawyer placed another document on the table.
The memorandum was dated two years earlier.
It contained a proposed amendment to the Bennett family trust.
But it had never been approved.
At the bottom was Thomas's signature.
Marcus examined it.
“This was a proposal. Nothing more.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why did you use it?””
“Because Thomas told me it was still being considered.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You were willing to risk your marriage and my daughter's inheritance based on something you never bothered to verify?””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
Camille closed her eyes.
She felt no desire to scream.
No desire to argue.
Just an overwhelming sadness.
“Daniel, I need you to listen carefully.””
He looked up.
“Our marriage is over.””
Daniel's face collapsed.
“Camille, please.””
“No.””
“Think about our son.””
“I am thinking about him.””
She adjusted the baby's blanket.
“He deserves parents who understand what love means. He deserves a home where nobody has to lie to feel powerful.””
Daniel began crying.
“I can change.””
Camille shook her head.
“You should change. But not because you want me back.””
She paused.
“Change because our son deserves a better father than the man you chose to be.””
Daniel lowered his head.
Marcus looked toward the lawyer.
“Any further communication regarding the marriage or child arrangements will go through counsel.””
Daniel nodded weakly.
Before leaving, he turned toward Camille.
“Can I hold him?””
Camille looked at her baby.
Then at Daniel.
“Not today.””
Daniel's eyes filled again.
He stood.
And walked out.
Camille watched the door close.
Marcus approached.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded slowly.
“I think I will be.””
He sat beside her.
“You don't have to be strong every minute.””
Camille leaned against his shoulder.
“I know.””
For a while, neither spoke.
Then her baby opened his eyes.
Camille smiled.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
Marcus gently touched the baby's tiny hand.
“Grandpa's little man.””
Camille laughed softly.
It was the first genuine laugh Marcus had heard from her in days.
But there was still one final piece of business.
