Chapter 6: The Husband Who Wanted Her Father's Empire
Daniel walked into the lobby like a man who had rehearsed his explanation a hundred times.
His dark coat was buttoned. His shoes were polished. His hair was neatly styled.
But his eyes kept moving.
First to Camille.
Then to Marcus.
Then to the folder on the table.
He knew the documents were there.
And he knew his plan was falling apart.
“Baby,” he said again.
Camille stood beside her father, holding their newborn.
“Don't call me that.””
Daniel stopped.
“Camille, please. Let me explain.””
“You can start by explaining why my signature is on a document I never signed.””
Daniel glanced at the paper.
“It's complicated.””
“It's my name.””
“I know.””
“You used my name.””
He exhaled.
“I was trying to protect our future.””
Camille stared at him.
“From what?””
“From depending on your father for everything.””
Marcus remained silent.
Daniel turned toward him.
“Mr. Bennett, you have to understand how this looks from my side.””
Marcus folded his arms.
“I'm listening.””
Daniel pulled out a chair but didn't sit.
“Ever since Camille and I got married, I've been treated like an outsider. Every business opportunity has to go through you. Every financial decision seems to require your approval.””
Marcus looked at him calmly.
“Did I ever prevent you from building your own company?””
Daniel hesitated.
“No.””
“Did I ever stop you from pursuing your career?””
“No.””
“Then what exactly did you want?””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Respect.””
Camille let out a quiet, disbelieving laugh.
“You wanted respect, so you forged my signature?””
Daniel turned toward her.
“That's not what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
He rubbed his face.
“I created a consulting structure. The money was going to be used for a legitimate development project.””
Evelyn spoke.
“The company has no operating history, no employees, and no documented consulting activity.””
Daniel looked at her.
“That doesn't mean it's fraudulent.””
“It means the payment requires investigation.””
Daniel turned back to Camille.
“Look, I was going to tell you everything.””
“When?””
“After the agreement was finalized.””
“After you received four million dollars?””
He said nothing.
Camille looked down at the baby.
The newborn had begun stirring.
She gently rocked him.
“Daniel, you were supposed to meet us here today.””
“I know.””
“You knew Vanessa was coming.””
“I knew she was going to retrieve the envelope.””
“And you let me walk into the lobby?””
Daniel looked away.
“I didn't think she would hit you.””
Camille stared at him.
“You knew there was a possibility she would confront me.””
“She wasn't supposed to hurt you.””
“But she did.””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Camille, I didn't plan that part.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Then what exactly did you plan?””
Daniel turned toward him.
“The agreement was supposed to be signed tomorrow. I needed the original documents before anyone noticed the changes.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“Because the revised ownership structure would have allowed the partnership to move forward.””
“And the four-million-dollar payment?””
Daniel swallowed.
“It was compensation for arranging the transaction.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You arranged a transfer of company assets without authorization.””
“I was creating an opportunity.””
“For yourself.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“For my family.””
Camille looked up.
“Don't use our baby to justify this.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“I'm doing everything for you two.””
“No. You're doing everything for yourself and calling it love.””
The words landed harder than she expected.
Daniel looked at her for several seconds.
Then he stepped closer.
“Can we please talk privately?””
“No.””
“Camille, we're married.””
“That's why this hurts.””
He glanced toward the guests.
“People are watching.””
Camille looked around.
“Yes. They are.””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Do you really want everyone knowing our private business?””
Camille stared at him.
“You didn't care about privacy when you used my signature.””
Daniel's face tightened.
Marcus moved between them.
“That's enough.””
Daniel looked at his father-in-law.
“You don't get to control everything.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Perhaps not. But I do get to protect my company and my daughter.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Your daughter has never had to worry about anything. You gave her everything.””
Camille's eyes filled.
“You think I wanted this?””
Daniel gestured toward Marcus.
“You have a father who owns hotels, businesses, and entire developments. You could have helped me build something instead of pretending you were just an ordinary woman.””
Camille looked at him in disbelief.
“I wanted to build a life with my husband. Not become another asset in my father's company.””
Daniel's voice rose.
“You don't understand what it's like to stand beside somebody who has that much power and never be considered important.””
Marcus answered quietly.
“I understand what it's like to work for something for forty years.””
Daniel turned.
“Easy to say when you already have everything.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“I started with a small roadside motel and two employees. I slept in the office when we couldn't afford another room. I cleaned bathrooms.
I fixed broken pipes. I spent nights worrying about payroll.””
He paused.
“I built what I have. And I offered you opportunities to build your own future.””
Daniel looked away.
Marcus continued.
“But you decided that being respected wasn't enough. You wanted control over something you didn't own.””
Daniel's expression darkened.
“You were never going to let me into the company.””
“Because you never earned that position.””
Camille watched her husband.
She remembered the first time they met.
Daniel had been funny, attentive, and ambitious. He had listened to her stories and made her feel as though she was the only person in the room.
He had never seemed jealous of her family.
At least, not at first.
Then came the subtle comments.
How her father always seemed to know better.
How every opportunity somehow involved Marcus.
How Daniel was tired of being treated like the son-in-law instead of the man.
She had dismissed those comments as insecurity.
Now she understood that they had been building toward something.
Evelyn interrupted.
“There's another document we need to discuss.””
Everyone turned.
She placed a second folder on the table.
“This was recovered from the archive earlier today. It contains a draft authorization for the regional development account.””
Marcus opened it.
He scanned the first page.
Then the second.
His expression became unreadable.
“What is this?””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“A proposed transfer of voting rights.””
Marcus slowly turned toward his son-in-law.
“Why does this document list Camille as the approving shareholder?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Camille stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn explained carefully.
“The document would have transferred certain voting rights associated with your family trust to Daniel's consulting company.””
Camille looked at her husband.
“You were trying to take my inheritance?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not take it. Manage it.””
“You never asked me.””
“Because you would have said no.””
The answer silenced everyone.
Camille looked at him.
“You knew I would say no.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
She stepped backward.
“Then you knew it wasn't yours to take.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“I was trying to create something for us. I was tired of feeling like a guest in your family's world.””
Camille's voice was barely audible.
“So you decided to steal my place in it?””
Daniel didn't respond.
Marcus closed the folder.
“Derrick, contact legal counsel. I want the trust documents secured, and I want a formal report prepared for the authorities.””
Daniel immediately raised his voice.
“Wait. You can't do that.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why not?””
“Because the transfer hasn't happened.””
“Then you should have nothing to fear from an investigation.””
Daniel turned toward Camille.
“Please. Tell him to stop.””
Camille looked at her husband.
For the first time, she didn't see the man she had married.
She saw someone who had calculated how much her family was worth and decided that her trust was an opportunity.
“I'm not stopping my father from protecting what belongs to him.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“You're choosing him over me?””
Camille shook her head.
“You made that choice for me.””
A hotel employee approached Derrick and whispered something.
Derrick turned toward Marcus.
“Sir, there's another development.””
“What?””
“The security team reviewed the exterior footage from last night.””
Marcus waited.
“Daniel didn't come alone.””
Daniel's face went pale.
Derrick continued.
“He arrived with a second vehicle. The passenger entered the management office using an employee access card.””
Marcus looked at the screen Derrick handed him.
The footage showed Daniel walking through the side entrance.
Behind him was a woman wearing a dark coat.
She carried a laptop bag.
Camille leaned closer.
“Who is that?””
Derrick zoomed in.
The woman's face became clearer.
Camille's breath caught.
She knew her.
It was Olivia Grant.
Her husband's personal assistant.
The same woman who had helped them organize their wedding.
The same woman who had visited their home several times.
The same woman Daniel had always described as a trusted colleague.
Camille stared at the image.
“Why was Olivia here?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Marcus looked at him.
“Who is she working for?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She's my assistant.””
Evelyn studied the footage.
“Then why did she use a hotel employee's access card?””
Daniel's eyes moved toward the exit.
Marcus noticed.
“Daniel.””
But Daniel was already stepping backward.
“I'm not answering another question without my lawyer.””
He turned toward the doors.
Derrick moved to the side, leaving him a clear path.
Nobody physically stopped him.
Camille watched him walk away.
Then her phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
She opened the message.
There was a photograph attached.
It showed Olivia Grant standing beside a hospital bassinet.
And beneath the photograph were eleven words:
Your husband isn't the only person who knows about your baby.
Camille's blood ran cold.
She looked toward Marcus.
“Daddy…”
He turned immediately.
“What happened?””
She handed him the phone.
Marcus studied the photograph.
His expression changed from anger to something much more serious.
“Derrick,” he said quietly.
“Yes, sir?””
“Find out who sent this message.””
He looked at Camille.
“And get someone to check on the baby.””
Camille pulled her newborn closer.
But before Derrick could respond, another message appeared.
Ask Daniel why Olivia was at the hospital the night your son was born.
Camille stopped breathing.
Because she suddenly remembered something.
The night her baby was delivered, Daniel had disappeared for almost two hours.
He had told her he was getting coffee.
She had never questioned it.
Now she looked toward the hotel entrance.
Daniel was gone.
May you like
And her father was staring at the photograph as though he had just discovered something far more dangerous than financial fraud.
*Because the person who had been helping Daniel might have had access to Camille's newborn from the very beginning.*
