Chapter 9: The Brother Who Betrayed the Family

Marcus Bennett had spent forty years building his company.

He had survived recessions, difficult acquisitions, lawsuits, failed partnerships, and business competitors who had tried to destroy everything he owned.

But nothing had prepared him for the possibility that his own brother had been quietly dismantling the company from within.

“Show me the filing,” Marcus said.

Derrick handed him the tablet.

The document was an emergency shareholder authorization.

It claimed that Camille Bennett had approved a temporary transfer of voting rights to Thomas Bennett.

The transfer would give Thomas authority over several major business decisions, including the regional development partnership.

Camille stared at the screen.

“My name is on that too.””

Marcus nodded.

“And you didn't sign it.””

“No.””

He handed the tablet to Evelyn.

“Contact our corporate attorneys immediately. Challenge the filing and freeze any action connected to it.””

Evelyn began making calls.

Olivia stood near the staircase.

“That's what Daniel was trying to accomplish,” she said.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Explain.””

Olivia took a breath.

“Thomas wanted control of the regional project. Daniel wanted money. Grant wanted a larger share of the development. They agreed to work together.””

“And you?””

Olivia looked down.

“I was supposed to help manage the paperwork.””

Camille stared at her.

“So you knew what was happening.””

Olivia nodded.

“I knew about the financial documents. I didn't know they planned to use your signature.””

Camille folded her arms.

“You were in my hospital room.””

Olivia's eyes filled.

“I know.””

“You came into my house.””

“I know.””

“You watched my husband pretend everything was normal.””

Olivia lowered her head.

“I'm sorry.””

Camille shook her head.

“Stop saying that like it's enough.””

Olivia had no answer.

Marcus turned toward Evelyn.

“Can we verify whether Thomas actually submitted this?””

Evelyn nodded.

“I'm checking the filing reference.””

She tapped the screen.

After a moment, she looked up.

“Yes. The request came from Thomas's executive account.””

Marcus took out his phone.

He called his brother.

Thomas answered on the third ring.

“Marcus.””

“Where are you?””

“At the office. Why?””

“I need you to explain an emergency shareholder transfer submitted under Camille's name.””

There was a pause.

Then Thomas laughed.

“Ah. So you've finally seen it.””

Marcus's face became still.

“You know about the filing.””

“Of course I do. I submitted it.””

“On what authority?””

“Camille's authorization.””

“She didn't sign it.””

Thomas sighed.

“Marcus, don't start.””

“I'm asking you a direct question.””

“She's your daughter. You can call her and ask.””

Marcus looked toward Camille.

“She is standing beside me. She says she never authorized anything.””

Thomas went silent.

Then he said, “Maybe she doesn't remember.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“Be very careful.””

Thomas laughed again.

“You always do this. You think you can frighten everyone into obeying you.””

“Why are you using my daughter's identity?””

“Because somebody has to protect this company from your decisions.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“What decisions?””

“You've become sentimental. Every business decision is about family. Every opportunity has to be approved by you. You bring Camille into everything, but you won't give anyone else a real position.””

Marcus looked at the tablet.

“Is this about the regional development project?””

“It's about the future.””

“Then why involve Daniel?””

Thomas paused.

“Daniel approached me.””

“And Grant?””

“Grant understands how to do business.””

“By falsifying documents?””

Thomas's voice hardened.

“Don't pretend your hands are clean, Marcus.””

The room fell silent.

Marcus held the phone tightly.

“What are you accusing me of?””

“You know exactly what I'm talking about.””

“I don't.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“You built this company by making promises you never intended to keep.””

Marcus stared at the wall.

“Which promises?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Then he said, “Ask Evelyn about the original development trust.””

Evelyn looked up sharply.

Marcus turned toward her.

“What is he talking about?””

Thomas continued.

“You think I'm the only person who knows what happened twenty years ago?””

Marcus's expression changed.

“Thomas, don't.””

“I'm tired of protecting you.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Camille looked at her father.

“Daddy?””

Marcus slowly put his phone away.

“It's nothing you need to worry about tonight.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Sir, I think we should discuss this privately.””

Camille looked between them.

“What happened twenty years ago?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

Camille took a step toward her father.

“Dad, please. I have spent the entire night discovering things people kept hidden from me. I don't want another secret.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Then he glanced at the sleeping newborn.

Finally, he nodded.

“Before I founded Bennett Hospitality, my brother and I inherited a small property from our father.””

Camille listened.

“Thomas wanted to sell it. I wanted to keep it. We argued for months. Eventually, I bought his share.””

“And?””

Marcus paused.

“Your grandmother had created a small family trust. It was supposed to provide equal benefits to both of us. I discovered that some of the original paperwork had been altered.””

Camille frowned.

“Altered how?””

“Thomas claimed I had used the trust to purchase the property without his consent. I believed the issue had been settled years ago.””

Evelyn added quietly, “It was never fully settled.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Evelyn.””

She continued.

“There were unresolved ownership records. Thomas has always believed he was entitled to a larger share of the company.””

Camille looked at her father.

“Does that mean Uncle Thomas thinks you stole from him?””

Marcus sighed.

“He thinks I owe him something.””

“And Daniel knew?””

Marcus nodded.

“Apparently.””

Camille turned away.

She felt as though every person she had trusted had been hiding another version of the truth.

Daniel had betrayed her.

Olivia had helped him.

Grant and Vanessa had participated.

Richard had abused his position.

And now her own uncle was apparently involved.

Her phone rang.

A message appeared from an unfamiliar number.

If you want to know why Daniel agreed to help Thomas, ask your father about the original Bennett family trust.

Camille stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

The trust was supposed to belong to you.

She looked at Marcus.

“Daddy?””

He turned.

Camille held up the phone.

Marcus read the messages.

His face became unreadable.

“Who sent this?””

“I don't know.””

Evelyn took a step closer.

“Mr. Bennett, I think it's time we reviewed the original trust documents.””

Marcus nodded reluctantly.

“Bring them tomorrow.””

“No, sir. We need to review them tonight.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

Evelyn opened her laptop.

“Because the filing Thomas submitted refers to a clause in the original trust that was never included in the revised corporate records.””

She typed for several seconds.

Then she turned the screen around.

A scanned document appeared.

It contained the names of Marcus Bennett, Thomas Bennett, and Camille Bennett.

Camille leaned forward.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn pointed to the final paragraph.

“Your grandfather established a succession provision. It designated a family beneficiary who would receive voting rights under certain circumstances.””

Marcus read the paragraph.

Then he stopped.

Camille looked at him.

“Daddy?””

He didn't answer.

Evelyn spoke instead.

“According to this document, Camille was designated as the primary successor to the original family trust.””

Camille stared.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“But I never knew about this.””

Marcus looked down.

“You were very young when the documents were created.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Marcus exhaled.

“Because I never intended to involve you in the business.””

Camille shook her head.

“That's not an answer.””

He looked at her.

“You were supposed to have a life of your own. I didn't want you growing up thinking your value came from an inheritance.””

Camille looked back at the document.

“So Thomas wanted control of something that legally belongs to me?””

Evelyn nodded.

“That's one possible explanation. But we need the original documents verified.””

Marcus turned toward the folder.

“Where are the originals?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“They were stored in the company's private archive.””

“Then retrieve them.””

“I tried.””

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn opened another file.

“The original archive was accessed three weeks ago. Several documents were removed.””

“By whom?””

Evelyn turned the laptop.

A name appeared.

Thomas Bennett.

Marcus slowly sat down.

Camille looked at her father.

“Dad, did you know Uncle Thomas was doing this?””

“No.””

“Did you know Daniel was involved?””

“No.””

“Did you know I was being used in all these documents?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No, sweetheart.””

Camille studied his face.

For the first time that night, she believed he was frightened.

Not for himself.

For her.

Then a loud knock came from the front door.

Derrick immediately moved toward the entrance.

He looked through the security camera.

“Mr. Bennett, it's the police.””

Marcus stood.

“Let them in.””

Two officers entered.

The first approached Marcus.

“Mr. Bennett?””

“Yes.””

“We need to speak with Camille Bennett.””

Camille tightened her arms around the baby.

“About what?””

The officer glanced at his colleague.

Then he held up a printed document.

“There's been a formal complaint alleging that you participated in the unauthorized transfer of company assets.””

Camille stared.

“That's impossible.””

The officer continued.

“The complaint includes a signed authorization and a statement from your husband.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“My daughter has already denied signing that document.””

The officer nodded.

“We understand. We're here to obtain her account, not to make an arrest.””

Camille looked at the paper.

At the bottom was her name.

Her signature.

And below it, a handwritten statement:

I knowingly authorized Daniel Bennett to establish the consulting company and arrange the transfer of family trust assets.

Camille shook her head.

“I never wrote this.””

The officer studied her.

“Then we'll need to establish how it was created.””

Marcus looked toward Derrick.

“Contact our attorneys.””

The officer nodded.

“There's one more matter.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

“The complaint was submitted by Thomas Bennett.””

Camille closed her eyes.

Her uncle had officially turned against her.

But the worst part was still coming.

Because the officer looked at the document again and said:

“Mr. Bennett also provided a witness statement claiming Camille was present when the original transfer was discussed.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“That's impossible.””

The officer looked toward him.

“Mr. Bennett, the witness named in the statement is you.””

Silence.

Camille turned toward her father.

“Daddy?””

Marcus stared at the paper.

Someone had forged his name too.

And whoever had done it was trying to make the entire family look guilty.

Then Evelyn's phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

And suddenly covered her mouth.

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Evelyn lowered the phone.

“The original trust documents have been located.””

“Where?””

She looked at Camille.

“Thomas has them.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Then we're going to get them.””

Evelyn swallowed.

“There's a problem, sir.””

“What?””

May you like

She whispered:

“Thomas says he'll only release them if Camille comes alone.””
