Chapter 8: The Woman Waiting Inside Her House
The drive from the mountain lodge took forty minutes.
Camille sat in the back of her father's SUV, her newborn secured in a properly installed infant seat beside her.
Marcus sat next to her.
Two security vehicles followed.
Outside, the mountain road curved through dark pine trees. The lodge lights disappeared behind them, replaced by the occasional glow of roadside houses.
Camille hadn't spoken much since Vanessa revealed that Olivia was supposed to meet Daniel at their home.
Marcus watched her carefully.
“Are you sure you want to go there tonight?””
Camille nodded.
“I need to see what's happening with my own eyes.””
“We can have the house checked first.””
“No, Daddy. I don't want to walk into another surprise.””
Marcus took out his phone.
“Derrick, arrange a perimeter check. Nobody enters the property until we confirm it's safe.””
He ended the call.
Camille looked out the window.
“Do you think Daniel ever loved me?””
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
“Why are you asking?””
“Because I keep thinking about all the things he said. The promises. The plans. The way he looked at me when we first met.””
She rubbed her hands together.
“I don't know which memories were real anymore.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Someone can make terrible decisions without every good moment being a lie.””
Camille looked at him.
“But what if he only married me because of our family?””
Marcus shook his head.
“That's a question you deserve an honest answer to. But don't let what he did convince you that you were foolish for loving him.””
Camille's eyes filled.
“I trusted him with everything.””
“I know.””
“He held our baby the first time and cried.””
Marcus looked down at the sleeping infant.
“Whatever his intentions were, your son is innocent. That's what matters now.””
The SUV slowed.
They had reached Camille's neighborhood.
The houses were large but understated, with trimmed lawns, stone driveways, and warm porch lights.
Their home stood at the end of a quiet street.
A two-story brick house with white columns and a wide front porch.
Camille recognized the silver sedan immediately.
It was parked in the driveway.
Olivia's car.
Her stomach tightened.
“She's here.””
Marcus spoke into his phone.
“Derrick, we're outside. Confirm the perimeter.””
A security officer approached the vehicle.
“Mr. Bennett, the property appears secure. We have no sign of forced entry.””
Marcus looked toward the house.
“Any movement?””
“One light is on upstairs. We haven't approached the windows.””
Camille unfastened her seat belt.
“I'm going inside.””
Marcus gently stopped her.
“Wait. Let security check the entrance.””
She nodded reluctantly.
A minute later, Derrick approached.
“The front door is unlocked.””
Camille looked at her father.
“That doesn't make sense.””
Marcus stepped out.
“Stay with me.””
They entered together.
The house smelled of lavender and the vanilla candles Camille usually burned in the living room.
A lamp was on beside the sofa.
Two coffee cups sat on the kitchen counter.
And on the dining table was a familiar leather folder.
Camille walked toward it.
“That's Daniel's.””
Marcus looked around.
“Don't touch anything yet.””
A sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Then a woman's voice.
“Daniel? Is that you?””
Camille froze.
Olivia appeared at the top of the staircase.
She wore black trousers and a cream blouse. Her hair was tied into a low bun, and she held a smartphone in one hand.
When she saw Camille, her face changed.
“Oh.””
Camille stared at her.
“What are you doing in my house?””
Olivia slowly descended the stairs.
“I was waiting for Daniel.””
“Why?””
Olivia glanced toward Marcus.
“Mr. Bennett.””
Marcus didn't return the greeting.
“Who authorized you to enter this property?””
Olivia looked toward the front door.
“Daniel gave me a key.””
Camille felt something break inside her.
“He gave you a key to my house?””
Olivia remained silent.
Camille looked at the woman.
“How long have you been coming here?””
“It's not what you think.””
“Then tell me what it is.””
Olivia put her phone on the small table.
“Daniel and I work together.””
“That doesn't explain why you were at the hospital when my son was born.””
Olivia looked down.
Camille stepped closer.
“You used a visitor pass under someone else's name.””
“I was helping Daniel.””
“With what?””
Olivia sighed.
“Please don't turn this into something personal.””
Camille stared at her.
“You were standing beside my newborn while I was recovering from surgery. How could that not be personal?””
Olivia's expression tightened.
“I never touched your baby.””
“But you were there.””
Olivia looked toward Marcus.
“Mr. Bennett, I think it's important that we separate the business issues from the family issues.””
Marcus answered calmly.
“You entered my daughter's home without her permission, used hospital access you weren't authorized to use, and appear in documents connected to a questionable financial transaction.””
Olivia's face went pale.
“Those documents aren't final.””
“Neither is the investigation.””
She took a step backward.
Camille noticed.
“Where is Daniel?””
Olivia shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“You said you were waiting for him.””
“I was.””
“Then why are you pretending you don't know where he is?””
Olivia looked toward the dining table.
Camille followed her gaze.
The leather folder was open.
Inside were printed bank statements, copies of the altered partnership agreement, and several photographs.
Camille approached.
One photograph showed Daniel standing beside Olivia outside a restaurant.
Another showed them entering a luxury apartment building.
A third showed Daniel holding a small velvet box.
Camille picked up the photograph.
Her heart sank.
The box was identical to the one Daniel had given her on their first wedding anniversary.
She looked at Olivia.
“Were you two together?””
Olivia's expression changed.
“Camille—”
“Were you?””
Olivia looked away.
“Yes.””
The room seemed to fall silent.
Camille put the photograph down.
“How long?””
“Almost a year.””
Camille stared at her.
A year.
Their son was only three weeks old.
Daniel had been carrying on another relationship while Camille was preparing for motherhood.
She looked toward the staircase.
She remembered the late-night calls.
The business dinners.
The sudden trips.
The times Daniel had said he was exhausted and needed to sleep in the guest room.
And all the while, Olivia had been walking into her home.
Marcus moved closer.
“Camille, sweetheart…”
She raised a hand.
“I'm okay.””
But her voice said otherwise.
Olivia suddenly spoke.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
Camille laughed softly.
“Then why did you?””
Olivia looked down.
“Daniel told me your marriage was already over.””
Camille stared at her.
“We were married. We were having a baby. He was sitting beside me in the delivery room.””
Olivia's eyes filled.
“He said he was only staying because of your father.””
Camille looked toward Marcus.
Then back at Olivia.
“So you believed him?””
“I loved him.””
Camille shook her head.
“And you believed that stealing from my family would somehow make him yours?””
Olivia didn't answer.
Marcus turned toward Derrick.
“Photograph everything. Secure the documents and preserve the property access records.””
Olivia immediately raised her voice.
“You can't take my personal belongings!””
Derrick remained calm.
“Ma'am, nobody is taking your personal belongings. We're documenting materials relevant to the incident. Any evidence will be handled through the appropriate legal process.””
Olivia reached for her phone.
Marcus spoke firmly.
“Don't make this worse.””
She stopped.
Then Camille noticed something on the kitchen counter.
A small white envelope.
Her name was written across it.
She picked it up.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
It contained a handwritten message from Daniel.
Camille, if you're reading this, then Olivia has already told you more than she should have.
She looked at the bottom.
There was another sentence.
I didn't choose her over you. I chose the only person who could help me get what your father promised me.
Camille frowned.
“What did my father promise you?””
Marcus took the paper.
“I never promised Daniel anything.””
Camille turned toward him.
“Then why would he write this?””
Marcus studied the handwriting.
“I don't know.””
Olivia suddenly began crying.
“He told me you wouldn't understand.””
Camille faced her.
“Understand what?””
Olivia wiped her eyes.
“Daniel said your father had promised him a controlling position in the company after you gave birth.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“That is a lie.””
Olivia shook her head.
“He showed me messages.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What messages?””
“Emails. Texts. A signed letter.””
Camille felt a chill.
“Where are they?””
Olivia pointed toward the folder.
“Daniel kept copies.””
Evelyn, who had followed them from the lodge with another security officer, opened the folder.
She searched through the documents.
Then she stopped.
“Mr. Bennett.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Evelyn handed him a printed email.
The sender address belonged to Marcus.
The subject line read:
Post-Delivery Transfer Arrangement.
Marcus stared at it.
“I never sent this.””
Evelyn checked the header.
“It's a forwarded copy. The original server information is missing.””
Marcus looked toward Olivia.
“Who gave you this?””
“Daniel.””
“Did he tell you it was authentic?””
“Yes.””
Marcus examined the document.
At the bottom was an electronic signature.
His signature.
But something else caught his attention.
The date.
It was dated four months before Camille's baby was born.
He looked at Evelyn.
“Find the original email chain.””
“I will.””
Camille looked at her father.
“Daddy, what if Daniel really believed you promised him something?””
Marcus slowly shook his head.
“I didn't.””
Then he looked at the paper again.
“Someone may have been using my name long before this hotel incident.””
Olivia stepped forward.
“There is one more thing.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Daniel didn't create the consulting company by himself.””
Camille frowned.
“Who helped him?””
Olivia looked directly at Marcus.
“Someone inside Bennett Hospitality.””
Evelyn went still.
“Who?””
Olivia hesitated.
Then she gave them a name.
“Your brother, Thomas.””
Marcus's face changed.
For the first time that night, he looked genuinely shaken.
Because Thomas Bennett wasn't just an employee.
He was Marcus's younger brother.
The man who had helped build the company from its earliest days.
The man Marcus trusted with the company's finances.
And the man who had signed off on several of the original development proposals.
Marcus slowly lowered the paper.
“Are you certain?””
Olivia nodded.
“He was the one who introduced Daniel to Grant.””
Camille looked between them.
“Why would Uncle Thomas do that?””
Nobody answered.
Then Derrick's phone rang.
He listened for a few seconds.
His face tightened.
“Mr. Bennett, there's a problem.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
“Thomas Bennett has just submitted an emergency request to transfer the company's controlling shares.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Under whose authorization?””
Derrick looked at Camille.
May you like
Then back at Marcus.
“Your daughter's.””
