Chapter 3: The Husband Who Thought He Could Control Everything
Grant Whitmore arrived twenty-seven minutes later.
He entered the mountain lodge wearing a navy cashmere coat, polished leather shoes, and the irritated expression of a man who had been interrupted during something important.
His phone was still in his hand.
“Vanessa!””
She hurried toward him.
“Grant, finally.””
He looked around the lobby.
“What happened?””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“This woman attacked me, and now her father is threatening me.””
Grant frowned.
“Who?””
Vanessa pointed toward Camille.
Grant looked at the young mother.
Then at Marcus.
His expression changed.
“Mr. Bennett?””
Marcus nodded.
“Grant.””
Grant immediately extended his hand.
“It's good to see you. I wish we'd met under better circumstances.””
Marcus didn't take the hand.
Grant slowly lowered it.
“What exactly is going on?””
Vanessa stepped between them.
“I was standing near the reception desk when she came rushing through. She bumped into me, started shouting, and then accused me of assaulting her.””
Camille looked up.
“That's not what happened.””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“Please don't interrupt.””
Grant held up one hand.
“Let's all calm down.””
Marcus gestured toward the security supervisor.
“Show him the recording.””
Grant looked confused.
“What recording?””
Derrick handed him the tablet.
“Security footage from the lobby.””
Grant watched.
His expression shifted with every second.
The slap.
Camille falling.
The baby crying.
Vanessa standing over her.
Richard telling Camille to leave.
Then Vanessa's voice.
“This place isn't for just anyone.””
Grant stopped the recording.
He looked at his wife.
“Vanessa, what did you do?””
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
“Grant!””
“Did you slap her?””
“She was disrespectful!””
“That's not what I asked.””
“She walked into me!””
Grant glanced at the screen.
“She was standing still.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You're seriously taking her side?””
Grant rubbed his forehead.
“I'm trying to understand why you thought hitting somebody was acceptable.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Because she was acting like she owned the place!””
Camille looked at her.
“I never said that.””
Grant turned toward Marcus.
“Mr. Bennett, I'm deeply sorry. This is embarrassing, and I assure you that it won't happen again.””
Marcus remained expressionless.
“Your apology isn't the one I'm waiting for.””
Grant nodded.
“Of course.””
He turned to Camille.
“I'm sorry this happened to you.””
Camille looked at him.
“Thank you.””
For a moment, it seemed the situation might finally settle.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
“Grant, tell him who we are. Tell him how much business we've brought into this hotel.””
Grant's eyes narrowed.
“Vanessa, stop.””
“No. I'm tired of being treated like a criminal. We have spent thousands here.
We've brought clients here. We know the owners.””
Marcus spoke calmly.
“I am one of the owners.””
Vanessa looked away.
Grant exhaled.
“Mr. Bennett, I understand your frustration. Perhaps we can resolve this without involving lawyers or damaging anyone's reputation.””
Marcus studied him.
“Are you asking me to protect your reputation?””
“I'm asking you to be reasonable.””
“Reasonable?””
Marcus pointed toward Camille.
“My daughter came here for a quiet weekend with her baby. Your wife slapped her. Your hotel manager tried to remove her. What part of that do you believe should be handled quietly?””
Grant lowered his voice.
“I don't want to minimize what happened.””
“Then don't.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her husband's arm.
“Grant, tell him about the agreement.””
Grant looked at her.
“Not now.””
“Why not? He needs to understand that we have a business relationship.””
Marcus's expression became colder.
“What agreement?””
Grant hesitated.
Vanessa answered for him.
“The regional development partnership. The one Grant has been discussing with your company.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know about it.””
Grant shifted uncomfortably.
“We were scheduled to finalize the preliminary agreement tomorrow.””
“Correct.””
“And I would hate for a personal disagreement to affect a professional relationship.””
Marcus looked at him for a long moment.
Then he said, “You believe this is a personal disagreement?””
Grant didn't answer.
Marcus turned to Derrick.
“Bring me the hospitality partnership file.””
Derrick nodded and stepped aside to make a call.
Grant's face tightened.
“Mr. Bennett, surely we don't need to do this here.””
“Why not?””
“Because there are guests watching.””
Marcus glanced around the lobby.
“Perhaps that's appropriate. They watched what happened to my daughter.””
Grant lowered his voice further.
“I have invested considerable time in this partnership. My company has committed resources. We have people depending on this agreement.””
Marcus nodded.
“And I have employees depending on a company that treats people fairly.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“Oh, please. We're talking about a slap. Nobody was seriously injured.””
Camille looked down at her baby.
The newborn had finally fallen asleep.
She gently moved the blanket away from his face.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
“You keep saying it was just a slap.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“What else was it supposed to be?””
Camille's voice trembled slightly.
“I had given birth three weeks ago. I was carrying my child. I wasn't looking for trouble. I was trying to check into a hotel.””
She paused.
“When you hit me, I didn't even think about myself. I thought about whether I had protected him when I fell.””
The lobby became quiet again.
Camille continued.
“You don't know how frightening that was.””
Vanessa looked toward Grant.
He didn't defend her.
For the first time, she seemed to understand that the situation was slipping beyond her control.
But she still wasn't finished.
“You're acting like I'm some terrible person,” Vanessa said.
“I've donated to charities. I've helped people. I've always been generous.””
Camille shook her head.
“Being generous when people are watching doesn't give you permission to be cruel when they aren't.””
A guest near the fireplace whispered, “Exactly.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Stay out of this.””
Marcus raised one hand.
“That's enough.””
Derrick returned carrying a thin black folder.
“Sir, the documents you requested.””
Marcus accepted it.
He opened the folder and scanned the first page.
Grant watched him carefully.
“Is there a problem?””
Marcus turned several pages.
“There's a section in this agreement concerning professional conduct, public representation, and reputational risk.””
Grant nodded.
“Standard language.””
“Indeed.””
Marcus closed the folder.
“And there's another section requiring full disclosure of any incident involving potential misconduct by a proposed business partner.””
Grant looked uncomfortable.
“What are you suggesting?””
“I'm suggesting that your wife has just created a situation that requires a formal review.””
Grant's jaw tightened.
“She's not an employee of my company.””
Marcus nodded.
“But she is publicly associated with it. And you are responsible for the way you conduct yourself in response to this incident.””
Grant stared at him.
“Are you threatening to cancel our agreement?””
“No. I'm telling you that it will not be signed tomorrow.””
Vanessa gasped.
“That's impossible!””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because Grant has worked on that deal for months!””
“Then he can explain to his business partners why it needs to be reviewed.””
Grant stepped forward.
“Mr. Bennett, please. We can resolve this.
I'll cover any medical expenses. I'll pay for a private suite. I'll arrange anything Camille needs.””
Camille looked at him.
“I don't need your money.””
Grant's expression tightened.
“I'm trying to make things right.””
“Then stop trying to buy your way out of what happened.””
Marcus placed the folder under his arm.
“Derrick, I want the complete footage preserved. No deletions. No edits. And I want a written report from every employee who witnessed the incident.””
“Yes, sir.””
He turned to Richard.
“And you will remain available for a formal review of your actions tonight.””
Richard nodded nervously.
“Understood.””
Vanessa looked furious.
“This is unbelievable. Richard was doing his job.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Was he?””
Richard didn't respond.
Then Camille's phone vibrated.
She glanced down.
A message appeared from her husband, Daniel.
Camille, are you still at the lodge? I heard something happened. Please don't make Dad turn this into a bigger problem.
Camille read it twice.
Her face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
She hesitated.
“Daniel knows.””
Marcus frowned.
“Your husband?””
Camille nodded.
Another message appeared.
We need to talk before you tell him everything.
Camille slowly looked toward the lobby doors.
Daniel had known she was coming to the hotel.
He had encouraged her to visit.
And he had promised to meet her there after finishing work.
But he hadn't arrived.
Instead, he was sending messages asking her not to tell her father everything.
Marcus read the expression on her face.
“Camille, is there something else?””
She looked down at the newborn.
Then back at her father.
“I think Daniel knows more about what happened than he's telling me.””
Grant suddenly looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa looked at Grant.
For one brief second, their eyes met.
Camille noticed.
And so did Marcus.
He turned toward his security director.
“Derrick, I want you to find out why Daniel is involved.””
Derrick nodded.
“Right away.””
Marcus placed a protective hand on Camille's shoulder.
“Baby, whatever this is, you're not facing it alone.””
Camille's phone vibrated again.
This time, it wasn't a text.
It was an incoming call.
Daniel.
She answered on speaker.
“Hello?””
Daniel's voice came through immediately.
“Camille, listen to me. Don't tell your father about the envelope.””
Camille went completely still.
“What envelope?””
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Vanessa wasn't supposed to touch you. But she was supposed to make sure you never checked into that hotel.””
Marcus slowly turned toward his daughter.
Grant's face lost its color.
May you like
And Vanessa took one step backward.
*Because the slap hadn't been an accident.*
