Chapter 5: The Signature That Changed Everything

Evelyn Price had worked for Marcus Bennett for fourteen years.

She had handled acquisitions, negotiated hotel management contracts, and reviewed financial records worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Marcus trusted her judgment.

And when Evelyn walked into a room carrying a folder and looking frightened, he knew the situation was serious.

“Sit down,” Marcus said.

Evelyn shook her head.

“We don't have much time.””

Marcus opened the folder.

“What happened?””

She removed three documents.

“The original partnership proposal was approved six weeks ago. The revised version was uploaded into the company's archive yesterday evening.””

Marcus scanned the first page.

His eyebrows tightened.

“This isn't the version I approved.””

“No, sir.””

He turned another page.

The proposed investment structure had changed.

Under the original agreement, Bennett Hospitality Group would retain controlling ownership of the regional resort development project.

Under the revised document, the Whitmore Development Corporation would receive a substantial controlling interest after the first phase.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Who authorized this?””

“Your digital signature appears on the revised version.””

Marcus stared at her.

“I didn't sign this.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because I was sitting outside your office when you approved the original document. And I personally witnessed you reject the proposed ownership amendment.””

Camille listened silently.

She was still trying to understand how her husband had become involved.

Evelyn turned another page.

“There's something else.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

“The revised agreement includes an additional payment to a consulting company registered three months ago.””

“Whose company?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Daniel Bennett is listed as the beneficial owner.””

Camille felt as if the room had tilted.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at her sympathetically.

“I'm sorry.””

Camille shook her head.

“My husband doesn't own a consulting company.””

“According to the registration documents, he does.””

Marcus placed the papers on the table.

“What's the amount?””

Evelyn pointed to the final page.

“Four million dollars.””

Silence.

The fireplace crackled.

Somewhere behind them, a guest dragged a suitcase across the lobby floor.

Camille looked at her father.

“Daddy, Daniel never told me about any of this.””

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

He was reading the payment schedule.

The consulting company was supposed to receive the money once the partnership was finalized.

But there was another problem.

The company wasn't registered at a commercial office.

It was registered to a residential address.

Camille recognized the address.

It was the house where she and Daniel lived.

Her fingers tightened around the baby's blanket.

“That's our home.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus slowly closed the folder.

“Where did you get these documents?””

“From the original archive. I recovered the previous version before the system administrator could overwrite it.””

“Who had access?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Daniel. Richard. And one person from the Whitmore organization.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Grant?””

“Yes.””

Camille stared at the documents.

The pieces were beginning to fit together.

Daniel had known about the envelope.

He had known Vanessa was coming.

He had asked Camille not to tell her father.

And now his name was attached to a company receiving millions of dollars from a deal that could change the ownership of one of Marcus's largest developments.

She swallowed.

“Why would he do this?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus reached for his phone.

“Get legal counsel on the line. Freeze all pending payments connected to this transaction. Preserve every version of the agreement.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Already initiated.””

“Good.””

He looked toward the conference room.

“And bring Grant in.””

Derrick opened the door.

Grant was standing beside Vanessa, pacing with his phone pressed against his ear.

He ended the call when he saw Marcus.

“Have you finished?””

Marcus gestured toward the chair.

“Sit.””

Grant remained standing.

“I'd prefer to know why I'm being dragged into an internal company dispute.””

Marcus pushed the revised agreement across the table.

“Read page seven.””

Grant glanced down.

His expression changed almost immediately.

“What is this?””

“You tell me.””

Grant looked at the document.

“This isn't final.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Vanessa moved closer.

“Grant, what's going on?””

He ignored her.

Marcus continued.

“Your company is listed as the controlling partner in a document bearing my digital signature. I never authorized it.””

Grant shook his head.

“I didn't prepare this.””

“Your company is named throughout.””

“I know.””

“And Daniel's consulting company is scheduled to receive four million dollars.””

Grant's face tightened.

“That's between Daniel and your company.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Not when the payment is tied to a fraudulent amendment.””

Grant looked toward Evelyn.

“Are you accusing me of fraud?””

“I'm showing you the documents,” Evelyn replied.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Grant, tell them what Daniel promised.””

Grant turned sharply.

“Be quiet.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“You said the money was already approved.””

Camille stood.

“What money?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Nothing.””

“Tell me.””

Grant grabbed his wife's arm.

“Vanessa, enough.””

She pulled away.

“You told me we were going to be rich enough to buy our own resort!””

The lobby seemed to freeze.

Camille looked at Grant.

Then at Vanessa.

Marcus said nothing.

Evelyn slowly closed the folder.

Grant rubbed his forehead.

“This is not how it looks.””

Camille's voice cracked.

“Then tell us how it looks.””

Grant looked toward the security guards.

“I want legal representation before I answer anything else.””

Marcus nodded.

“That's your right.””

He turned toward Derrick.

“Make sure the original documents remain secured. Nobody touches the archive.””

Derrick nodded.

Grant took a breath.

“Mr. Bennett, I want you to understand that I was approached by Daniel. He told me he could help restructure the project.””

Camille's eyes widened.

“Daniel approached you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Several months ago.””

“Before we had our baby?””

Grant hesitated.

“Yes.””

Camille took a step backward.

For months, she had believed Daniel was simply working late.

He had told her he was building relationships, meeting investors, and trying to improve their financial future.

She had even encouraged him.

She remembered the nights he returned home smelling of expensive cologne, the unexplained hotel receipts, and the sudden interest in her father's business.

Every time she asked, he had smiled and kissed her forehead.

I'm doing this for us, baby.

Now those words sounded different.

Marcus noticed his daughter's expression.

“Camille, sit down.””

She shook her head.

“I'm fine.””

Grant looked at her.

“Your husband was trying to secure a financial future for your family.””

Camille stared at him.

“By stealing from my father?””

“That's a strong accusation.””

“Then explain the four million dollars.””

Grant looked away.

Vanessa suddenly started crying.

Not softly.

She covered her face with both hands.

“Grant, you said nobody would find out.””

Grant turned toward her.

“Stop talking.””

“You said the paperwork was already handled!””

“Vanessa!””

She stepped backward.

“I didn't know it was illegal.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Did you have access to the original envelope?””

Vanessa stopped crying.

“What envelope?””

“The one Daniel mentioned.””

Vanessa's eyes flickered toward Grant.

Camille noticed.

“You knew about it.””

“No.””

“Vanessa, you knew.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“I only wanted to retrieve some documents. I wasn't supposed to hurt anyone.””

Camille felt a chill run down her spine.

“So you came here because you thought I had the envelope?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Marcus stood.

“Did Daniel tell you my daughter was bringing the original documents here?””

Vanessa's silence was answer enough.

Evelyn opened the folder again.

“There is another issue.””

Marcus turned.

“What now?””

Evelyn removed a photograph.

It showed a printed copy of a document bearing Camille's signature.

Camille stared at it.

“That isn't mine.””

Evelyn nodded.

“We believe someone has used your identity to authorize a transfer.””

Marcus looked at the page.

“Where was this found?””

“In the same archive.””

Camille leaned forward.

Her name appeared beneath a declaration stating that she had voluntarily transferred a portion of her inheritance rights into Daniel's consulting company.

She looked at the signature.

It was similar to hers.

But something was wrong.

The final letter of her surname had been written differently.

Camille shook her head.

“I never signed this.””

Marcus's expression darkened.

“Who witnessed it?””

Evelyn pointed to the bottom of the page.

A witness signature appeared beneath Camille's.

Vanessa Whitmore.

Camille looked at her.

“You signed this?””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“I was told it was just a form.””

“You witnessed my signature?””

“I didn't know what it meant!””

Marcus took the paper.

“Who gave it to you?””

Vanessa looked toward the conference room door.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel.””

Camille closed her eyes.

The man she had married had apparently used her name in a financial arrangement she knew nothing about.

And now her signature was attached to a document she had never seen.

Marcus turned toward Derrick.

“Call our attorneys. This is no longer just a hotel incident.””

Derrick nodded.

But before he could leave, Camille's phone rang again.

The screen displayed Daniel's name.

She answered.

“Where are you?””

Daniel sounded breathless.

“I'm outside.””

Camille looked toward the glass entrance.

A silver sedan had just pulled up.

Daniel stepped out.

He looked through the windows and saw the gathering around the conference table.

Then he saw Camille.

His face changed.

He entered the lobby.

“Baby.””

Camille didn't move.

Daniel approached slowly.

“I'm sorry.””

She stared at him.

“Did you forge my signature?””

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

Then toward the documents.

He swallowed.

“I can explain.””

Camille's voice broke.

“Did you use my name to steal money?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

And then he said the one thing she hadn't expected.

“I did it because your father was never going to give us what we deserved.””

Marcus stood up.

“What did you just say?””

Daniel looked at him.

May you like

“You heard me.””

And for the first time since entering the hotel, Daniel stopped pretending to be afraid.
