Chapter 1: The Woman in the Red Dress

The day Michael Carter publicly abandoned his wife, he made one mistake he would spend the rest of his life regretting.

He assumed the woman standing beside the stroller was still the same frightened wife who had spent five years making excuses for him.

He had no idea what she had discovered.

The marina glittered beneath the late-afternoon sun. White yachts rocked gently against their moorings, expensive sunglasses reflected the water, and the faint smell of salt and polished teak drifted through the air.

Danielle Carter stood near the entrance to the private dock.

She wore a beige blazer over a gold silk dress, her dark hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. One hand rested on the handle of a beautiful black stroller.

Inside, her six-week-old daughter, Olivia, slept peacefully beneath a lightweight cream blanket.

Danielle checked her phone.

3:42 p.m.

Michael had promised to arrive at four.

She smiled when she spotted a familiar figure stepping off the dock with a leather suitcase.

"Michael!""

She lifted her hand and waved.

"We're here!""

Michael looked toward her.

For a fraction of a second, his expression changed.

Surprise.

Then irritation.

He hadn't expected her to come.

Before he could respond, a woman in a fitted red dress appeared from behind him.

Her heels clicked against the wooden boards.

She walked straight toward Michael, wrapped both arms around his neck, and kissed him.

Not a greeting.

Not a friendly kiss.

A long, deliberate kiss.

Danielle's raised hand slowly fell.

A man standing near the yacht's gangway stopped speaking. Two women beside a bench exchanged startled looks. An older gentleman lowered his sunglasses.

Michael didn't pull away.

Instead, he dropped his suitcase and placed one hand against the woman's waist.

When they separated, the woman smiled.

"Miss me?"" she whispered.

Michael chuckled.

"Every minute, Vanessa.""

Danielle felt something cold settle beneath her ribs.

Vanessa.

She knew that name.

She had seen it on hotel receipts, restaurant reservations, and a credit card statement Michael had once claimed belonged to a business associate.

She had even heard him whisper it during a phone call at two in the morning.

But seeing the woman standing in front of her husband was different.

It made every lie suddenly visible.

Vanessa slipped her arm through Michael's.

"Come on, baby. We have somewhere to be.""

Michael picked up his suitcase.

Then he noticed the stroller.

His eyebrows tightened.

He approached Danielle with the same expression he used when an employee brought him an inconvenient problem.

"What are you doing here?""

Danielle looked at him.

For several seconds, she couldn't find her voice.

Then she placed one hand gently on the stroller.

"I wanted you to meet your daughter.""

Michael glanced inside.

The baby stirred, her tiny fingers moving beneath the blanket.

His expression remained strangely distant.

"My daughter?""

"Yes, Michael. Olivia. Your daughter.""

Vanessa leaned against his shoulder.

She looked at the baby, then at Danielle.

A small smile appeared on her face.

"Well..."" She tilted her head.

"This is awkward.""

Danielle turned toward her.

"You're Vanessa, aren't you?""

Vanessa raised an eyebrow.

"At least somebody knows my name.""

Michael sighed impatiently.

"Danielle, don't start.""

"Start what?""

"Whatever this is. The public scene. The emotional performance.""

Danielle stared at him.

She had spent six weeks recovering from childbirth. Six weeks learning how to recognize Olivia's cries, how to prepare bottles at three in the morning, and how to sleep in twenty-minute intervals.

Six weeks waiting for her husband to come home.

And now he was standing in front of her with another woman.

"Michael, you told me you were traveling for work.""

"I was.""

"With her?""

Vanessa laughed softly.

Michael didn't deny it.

Instead, he adjusted his expensive watch.

"Listen, Danielle. I'm not doing this here.""

"You kissed her in front of me.""

"That's my business.""

"Our daughter is right here.""

Michael looked down at the stroller again.

For a moment, Danielle thought he might bend down and touch Olivia's cheek.

Instead, he took a step backward.

Vanessa tightened her grip around his arm.

"Michael, darling, we really should go.""

Danielle swallowed.

"Are you leaving us?""

Michael exhaled through his nose.

"Danielle, I'm a man. I can't stay faithful forever.""

The words landed harder than a slap.

A nearby couple went silent.

Danielle looked at the man she had married five years earlier.

She remembered the night he proposed in a little Italian restaurant in Chicago. She remembered how he had promised that no matter how successful they became, they would never allow money or ambition to change their marriage.

She remembered his hand resting on hers during their wedding vows.

Now that same hand rested comfortably around another woman's waist.

"Is that what you tell yourself?"" Danielle asked quietly.

Michael shrugged.

"Don't make me the villain because I want something different.""

Vanessa examined her manicured nails.

"Some relationships simply run their course.""

Danielle looked at her.

"Was that before or after you started sleeping with my husband?""

Vanessa's smile disappeared for half a second.

Then she laughed.

"Michael told me your marriage was over long before Olivia was born.""

Danielle's throat tightened.

Michael stepped closer.

"Enough.""

"No," Danielle whispered.

"You don't get to tell me when enough is enough.""

He looked around at the people watching.

His jaw hardened.

"You're embarrassing yourself.""

Danielle glanced down at Olivia.

Her daughter had opened her eyes.

Two tiny dark eyes stared up at her mother.

Danielle carefully adjusted the blanket.

Then she wiped a tear from her cheek.

Michael mistook the gesture for surrender.

He reached for his suitcase.

"Look, I'll have my attorney contact you. We can discuss the financial arrangements privately.""

"Financial arrangements?""

"Yes. You won't have to worry about money.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Michael takes care of the people he loves.""

Danielle looked up.

"Does he?""

Michael frowned.

"What's that supposed to mean?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked beyond his shoulder.

At the far end of the marina, a dark vehicle had just pulled into the private parking area.

Two men in navy suits stepped out.

A third man followed.

Danielle recognized him.

She had been waiting for him.

Michael noticed her expression.

"What?""

Danielle gently placed both hands on the stroller.

Then she met his eyes.

"You forgot one thing.""

Michael rolled his eyes.

"Not now, Danielle.""

"Look to your right.""

He turned.

His face changed instantly.

The color drained from his cheeks.

His mouth opened, but no words came out.

Vanessa followed his gaze.

Her smug smile vanished.

May you like

The man approaching them was someone Michael had spent the previous three months desperately trying to avoid.

And he wasn't alone.
