Chapter 3: The Signature He Thought Nobody Would Notice

The marina's private lounge overlooked the water through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Danielle sat in a cream leather chair with Olivia sleeping in her arms. Her father stood near the window, speaking quietly with Daniel Collins.

Outside, Michael was still arguing with the security officers.

His voice occasionally rose above the sound of the harbor.

"I have a right to speak to my wife!""

A security officer answered calmly.

"Sir, you're welcome to arrange communication through your attorney.""

Danielle closed her eyes.

For six weeks, she had imagined this conversation.

She had imagined Michael walking into the hospital room, seeing Olivia, and crying.

She had imagined him taking his daughter into his arms.

She had imagined him apologizing for missing the birth because of an emergency business trip.

Instead, he had arrived at the marina with another woman.

And somehow, the humiliation had become the clearest moment of Danielle's life.

Richard approached her.

"How is she?""

"Still sleeping.""

"She has your mother's nose.""

Danielle smiled faintly.

"I think she has Michael's ears.""

Richard sat opposite her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he asked, "Are you certain you want to proceed?""

Danielle looked down at her daughter.

"Yes.""

"Even if things become unpleasant?""

She nodded.

"Especially then.""

Richard studied her face.

"I know you loved him.""

Danielle swallowed.

"I did.""

"That doesn't make you weak.""

She looked toward the window.

"I kept thinking if I gave him enough time, he would come back to us.""

Richard placed his hand over hers.

"Sometimes people don't come back because they were never planning to stay.""

Danielle looked down at Olivia.

A tiny hand had escaped the blanket.

She gently tucked it back inside.

"I don't want her growing up thinking this is what love looks like.""

"Then she won't.""

A knock interrupted them.

Daniel Collins entered carrying the same leather folder.

"Mr. Bennett, I've received confirmation from the board.""

Richard stood.

"And?""

"The suspension has been approved unanimously.""

Danielle looked up.

"What about the financial investigation?""

Collins opened the folder.

"We've identified three major transfers that require immediate attention.""

He placed a document on the table.

Danielle looked at the figures.

$85,000.

$140,000.

$215,000.

Each transaction had been authorized through Michael's executive account.

"Where did the money go?"" she asked.

Collins pointed to the recipient information.

"Two transfers went to a private property company. The third went to an account associated with a luxury apartment lease.""

Richard frowned.

"Whose apartment?""

Collins paused.

"According to the preliminary records, the lease is registered to Vanessa Reed.""

Danielle stared at the page.

Vanessa's apartment.

The one Michael had claimed belonged to a business partner.

The one he had supposedly never visited.

She felt a bitter taste in her mouth.

"How long?""

"At least eight months.""

Richard looked at her.

"Danielle, you don't have to read every detail today.""

"I need to know.""

Collins nodded.

"There's something else.""

He turned to another page.

"Several transfers were approved using a secondary authorization linked to the Carter Family Trust.""

Danielle frowned.

"That account?""

Richard's expression changed.

"That's impossible.""

"Why?"" she asked.

Richard looked at Collins.

"Because that trust requires two authorized signatures.""

Danielle slowly placed Olivia in the stroller.

"Michael's and mine?""

Collins nodded.

"Yes.""

"But I haven't signed anything in months.""

"That's why the board requested an immediate forensic review.""

Danielle leaned forward.

"Show me the documents.""

Collins handed her a printed authorization form.

At the bottom were two signatures.

Michael Carter.

Danielle Carter.

Her stomach tightened.

The signature beside her name looked almost identical to hers.

But it wasn't hers.

She knew the way she crossed the letter D. She knew the slight upward curve at the end of her surname.

This signature was too neat.

Too deliberate.

"Someone forged my name.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"It appears so.""

Danielle looked at the date.

March 14.

She remembered that day.

She had been at home, sick with morning sickness, while Michael told her he was attending a board dinner.

She remembered calling him around nine.

He hadn't answered.

She remembered waking up the following morning to find him already gone.

"What was the transfer for?"" she asked.

Collins turned the page.

"A private investment.""

"Which investment?""

He hesitated.

"The purchase of a yacht.""

Danielle blinked.

"A yacht?""

Richard stared at the paperwork.

"Which yacht?""

Collins read the registration information.

"The vessel is called Serenity.""

Danielle felt the room tilt slightly.

She knew that name.

It was the yacht Michael had shown her photographs of months earlier.

He had told her he was considering buying it for the family.

He had said they would spend summers sailing together after Olivia was born.

Danielle looked at the authorization form again.

"Was it purchased?""

"Yes.""

"Who owns it?""

Collins turned the page.

"The registered owner is a holding company.""

"Who controls the holding company?""

Collins looked at Richard.

Then at Danielle.

"Vanessa Reed.""

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the gentle movement of water against the marina.

Danielle leaned back.

Vanessa hadn't simply been sleeping with her husband.

She had been receiving money from their company.

Money that had been transferred through an account requiring Danielle's authorization.

Michael had used her name to finance another woman's lifestyle.

Richard stood abruptly.

"Daniel, I want every transaction frozen immediately.""

"Already underway.""

"And I want the original authorization records preserved.""

"Of course.""

Danielle stared at the papers.

"How much?""

Collins checked the summary.

"The yacht, the apartment, and related payments total approximately $640,000.""

Richard exhaled sharply.

"Unbelievable.""

Danielle looked at him.

"Did you know?""

Richard shook his head.

"Absolutely not.""

She believed him.

That was the strange thing.

She had spent months questioning her instincts about Michael.

But she had never needed to question her father's.

A sudden vibration came from her phone.

Michael.

She stared at the screen.

Then answered.

"Hello?""

"Danielle.""

His voice sounded different now.

The confidence was gone.

"What?""

"Can we talk?""

"We're talking.""

"Not like this. Alone.""

She looked at Richard.

"No.""

He exhaled.

"Listen, I know you're angry.""

"Angry?""

"I know I handled things badly today.""

Danielle almost laughed.

"Is that what you call it?""

"Please. I need you to hear me.""

"Go ahead.""

There was a pause.

Then Michael said, "The documents you're looking at don't tell the whole story.""

"Which part is missing?""

"Vanessa and I were making an investment.""

"With our money?""

"With company money.""

"Under my name?""

"Danielle, it was temporary.""

"Did you forge my signature?""

Silence.

She looked at the phone.

"Michael?""

"I was going to explain.""

"That's not an answer.""

"I needed the money quickly. The investment was going to make us more money.""

"Who is us?""

"Both of us.""

Danielle looked down at Olivia.

Her daughter had started stirring.

Michael continued.

"Listen, if we can keep this within the family, we can fix everything.""

Danielle's voice became very quiet.

"You used my name to steal money.""

"I didn't steal anything.""

"You bought a yacht for your girlfriend.""

"That's not how it happened.""

"Then how did it happen?""

Michael lowered his voice.

"Danielle, you know how business works.""

She stared at the window.

Beyond the glass, sunlight danced on the water.

"No, Michael. I know how marriage works. Or at least I thought I did.""

"Please don't do this.""

"Do what?""

"Destroy everything over one mistake.""

Danielle closed her eyes.

"One mistake?""

He spoke faster.

"I can sell the yacht. I can return the money. We can put this behind us. I'll end things with Vanessa.""

Danielle didn't respond.

"Danielle?""

She looked toward her father.

Richard was watching her, but he didn't interfere.

"Michael, I don't want you to end things with Vanessa for me.""

He went quiet.

"I want you to understand that I am ending things with you.""

A long silence followed.

Then Michael's voice changed.

"You're making a huge mistake.""

Danielle smiled sadly.

"That's what I used to think every time I considered leaving.""

She ended the call.

For several seconds, she simply sat there.

Then a message arrived.

It was from Vanessa.

A photograph appeared first.

Danielle opened it.

The image showed a document spread across a white marble table.

A purchase agreement.

A transfer authorization.

And a handwritten note.

He promised me the yacht would be mine before the baby arrived.

Below the photograph was a message.

*You need to know what your husband has been doing behind your back. I just found something much worse.*

Danielle's fingers tightened around the phone.

Another message appeared.

*Michael didn't just use your signature to buy the yacht. He used your daughter's identity, too.*

Danielle stopped breathing.

She looked toward Collins.

"Daniel?""

He turned immediately.

"Yes?""

She held out the phone.

"Find out what this means.""

Collins read the message.

His expression changed.

Richard stepped closer.

"What is it?""

Danielle looked down at Olivia.

The baby was awake now, staring up at her with wide, innocent eyes.

Danielle gently kissed her forehead.

Then she looked at the two men.

May you like

"Someone has been using my daughter's name.""

And for the first time that afternoon, her father looked genuinely afraid.
