Chapter 5: The Voice on the Recording

Richard didn't speak for several seconds.

Thomas Reed.

The name was familiar.

He was one of Carter Development's original investors and had served as Michael's chief financial adviser for nearly seven years.

Richard had met him dozens of times.

He had attended company dinners, charity galas, and private meetings at Bennett Capital.

He had even stood beside Michael during Danielle's wedding reception.

"Are you certain?"" Richard asked.

Vanessa nodded.

"My brother has been working with Michael for years.""

Richard looked at Collins.

"Get the recording reviewed.""

Collins placed the USB drive into a secured company laptop.

"I'll need to preserve the original file and establish its authenticity.""

"Do that.""

Danielle sat silently.

She was trying to process the fact that a man she had known for years might have helped someone use her daughter's identity.

Thomas had once brought her flowers after a difficult medical appointment.

He had sent a gift basket when Olivia was born.

He had even called her the week before to ask how the baby was sleeping.

The memory made her feel sick.

"Play it," she said.

Collins hesitated.

"We should verify the file first.""

"I understand. But if my daughter's name is on that recording, I want to hear it.""

Richard placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Then we'll listen together.""

Collins opened the audio file.

A man's voice emerged through the laptop speakers.

Michael.

"You're sure the account won't trigger anything?""

Another voice answered.

Thomas.

"Not if we keep the transfers below the reporting threshold.""

Michael chuckled.

"And the kid's information?""

"Already verified. The birth records were enough to establish the custodial account.""

Danielle felt her stomach turn.

Michael continued.

"What happens if Danielle asks?""

"She won't. You said she doesn't understand any of this.""

A pause.

Then Michael laughed.

"She trusts me.""

Thomas responded.

"That's useful. Keep it that way.""

Danielle's eyes filled with tears.

Not because Michael had cheated.

Not even because he had stolen money.

Because he had used her trust as a tool.

The recording continued.

Michael said, "Once the yacht is transferred, Vanessa can hold it for a while. We liquidate the remaining assets, and I move the money overseas.""

Thomas laughed.

"And your wife?""

"She'll be too busy with the baby to notice.""

Richard abruptly closed his eyes.

Danielle reached for the edge of the table.

The next sentence made her blood run cold.

Michael said, "If she starts asking questions, I'll make sure she looks unstable. New mother, emotional, exhausted. Nobody will take her seriously.""

Thomas laughed again.

"You're a terrible husband.""

Michael replied, "I'm a practical businessman.""

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

The café seemed unusually quiet.

Even the gentle clinking of coffee cups had stopped.

Danielle stared at the dark laptop screen.

For weeks, she had questioned whether she had been too sensitive.

Whether pregnancy had made her suspicious.

Whether the exhaustion of motherhood had caused her to misunderstand Michael's behavior.

Now she knew.

He hadn't simply betrayed her.

He had planned to discredit her if she discovered what he was doing.

Richard stood.

"Daniel, I want that recording copied and preserved immediately.""

"Already handling it.""

"Contact the company's external auditors. And notify the board that this investigation involves suspected identity fraud and financial misconduct.""

Collins nodded.

Danielle looked toward Vanessa.

"Did you know he planned to leave the country?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

"Did you know he was going to transfer the money overseas?""

"No.""

"Did you know he planned to make me look unstable?""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"No.""

Danielle looked at her for a long moment.

"Then why should I believe anything else you say?""

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"Because I have the messages.""

She opened her phone.

"There were conversations between Michael and Thomas about moving the money. I saved screenshots because I thought Michael was planning to cheat me out of the yacht.""

Danielle looked at her.

"You thought he was stealing from you?""

Vanessa nodded.

"He promised me the yacht would be mine. But when I asked him to put it in my name, he kept delaying it.""

She scrolled through her phone.

"Last night, he sent me this.""

She showed Danielle a message.

*Michael: Don't worry. Once the final transfer clears, we disappear.*

Another message followed.

*Michael: Danielle won't be a problem.*

Vanessa's fingers trembled.

"I thought he meant the divorce.""

Danielle stared at the screen.

"Did you ask him what he meant?""

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"He said he had a plan.""

Richard leaned forward.

"What plan?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"He said he was going to have Danielle declared financially incompetent.""

Danielle felt the room become smaller.

"How?""

Vanessa pulled up another message.

Michael had written:

*She's overwhelmed. The baby isn't sleeping. She's been crying constantly. I can document everything and make it look like she can't manage her finances.*

Danielle remembered the nights she had cried from exhaustion.

The afternoons when she had called Michael because Olivia had a fever.

The mornings when she had asked him to come home early because she hadn't slept.

He had been documenting her worst moments.

Not to help her.

To use them against her.

Richard's face darkened.

"That man is going to answer for every one of these decisions.""

Danielle took a slow breath.

"There's something I want to know.""

Collins looked at her.

"Yes?""

"Was Michael planning to leave with the money before or after Olivia's account was emptied?""

Collins checked the documents.

"Based on the transfer schedule, the final movement was supposed to happen next week.""

"How much?""

"Approximately $2.4 million.""

Richard shook his head.

"We'll stop it.""

Collins nodded.

"We're already working with the relevant financial institutions.""

Vanessa looked terrified.

"Michael doesn't know I gave you the recording.""

Danielle turned toward her.

"Does he know you're here?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I told him I was going shopping.""

Richard's phone began vibrating.

He checked the caller ID.

Then answered.

"Yes?""

He listened.

His expression changed.

"What do you mean the office is empty?""

Danielle looked up.

Richard turned away from the table.

"Has anyone contacted Michael?""

Another pause.

"Then find out who authorized the removal.""

He ended the call.

Collins stood.

"What happened?""

"Michael's office has been cleared.""

Danielle frowned.

"What do you mean cleared?""

"His personal belongings are gone. His laptop is missing. So are several original financial records.""

Collins immediately checked his phone.

"I've received a security alert. Someone used Michael's credentials to access the corporate document archive twenty minutes ago.""

Richard's voice hardened.

"Can you trace it?""

"Not yet.""

Danielle stood.

"Where is Michael?""

Nobody answered.

Her phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

She opened the message.

*Danielle, we need to talk. Stop listening to your father. You have no idea what you've signed.*

Another message arrived.

*If you want your daughter to stay safe, meet me tonight. Alone.*

Danielle's hand went cold.

Richard took the phone.

He read both messages.

Then looked directly at her.

"You're not going anywhere alone.""

Danielle nodded.

But before he could say anything else, a third message appeared.

This one contained a photograph.

It showed Olivia's hospital bracelet.

And beneath it was a sentence.

*I still have the original paperwork.*

Danielle looked at her daughter.

Then at the photograph.

Michael had somehow obtained something from the hospital.

May you like

Something that should never have left her daughter's medical records.

And she suddenly understood that the financial fraud was only part of the story.
