Chapter 6: The Hospital File

At 8:17 that evening, Danielle received a call from the hospital where Olivia had been born.
She answered immediately.
"Hello?""
"Mrs. Carter? This is Patricia Wells from patient records.""
Danielle sat upright.
"Is something wrong with Olivia?""
"No, ma'am. Your daughter is fine. I'm calling because we've identified an unauthorized request involving her medical records.""
Danielle's fingers tightened around the phone.
"What kind of request?""
"Someone contacted our records department this afternoon claiming to be an authorized representative of your family.""
"Who?""
"The caller identified himself as Michael Carter.""
Danielle closed her eyes.
"What did he request?""
"Copies of Olivia's birth documentation, discharge records, and identification paperwork.""
"Did you send them?""
There was a pause.
"We released a limited set of documents after the caller provided information that appeared to match the account.""
Danielle stood.
"Which documents?""
"Your daughter's discharge summary, birth verification, and the temporary identification form.""
Danielle's voice sharpened.
"Why would my husband need those documents without telling me?""
"I can't speak to his reasons, ma'am.""
"Did he sign anything?""
"Yes. He submitted an authorization form.""
"Can you send me a copy?""
"We can arrange that through our secure patient portal.""
Danielle ended the call and immediately contacted Collins.
He arrived at Richard's house forty minutes later.
Richard had insisted that Danielle and Olivia stay with him until the situation was under control.
The house was a large stone residence overlooking a quiet private garden. Security cameras covered the driveway, and two officers were stationed near the front entrance.
Danielle sat in the living room with Olivia in her arms.
She had changed into a simple cream sweater and black trousers.
The beige blazer and gold dress from the marina were hanging in the guest bedroom.
She hadn't wanted to look at them again.
Collins entered carrying his laptop.
"I've reviewed the hospital's preliminary report.""
"What did you find?""
"Michael requested the records using a power-of-attorney document.""
Danielle frowned.
"I never gave him power of attorney over Olivia.""
"That's what I expected.""
He opened the document.
At the bottom was Danielle's signature.
Again.
Forged.
Richard leaned forward.
"How did he obtain the hospital's internal authorization?""
Collins scrolled.
"The document appears to have been submitted through a private medical administration company.""
"Which one?""
"Northstar Family Services.""
Danielle recognized the name.
"That's the company Michael used to arrange our insurance.""
Collins nodded.
"Exactly.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Was Thomas involved?""
"Possibly. Northstar's registered financial contact is an associate of his.""
Danielle looked at the document.
"So Michael could request medical information about Olivia whenever he wanted?""
"Based on the forged authorization, yes.""
She looked down at her daughter.
"Could he change her records?""
"That would depend on the specific authority granted. But the document needs to be challenged immediately.""
Danielle swallowed.
"Then challenge it.""
Collins nodded.
"We'll also notify the hospital that no further information can be released without your direct verification.""
Richard walked toward the fireplace.
"How many companies are involved in this?""
"At least four so far.""
"And how many people?""
Collins paused.
"That's what concerns me.""
He opened another file.
"There's a reference in the financial records to a company called Meridian Family Management.""
Danielle looked up.
"What is that?""
"An administrative firm that manages trusts, estate documents, and family financial arrangements.""
Richard turned around.
"Who owns it?""
Collins displayed the registration information.
The name was unfamiliar.
But the address wasn't.
Danielle leaned forward.
"That's Michael's office address.""
"Correct.""
Collins opened another document.
"Meridian was incorporated six months before Olivia's birth. Its original director was Michael Carter. Thomas Reed was listed as a financial consultant.""
Richard shook his head.
"They created an entire company for this?""
"It appears that way.""
Danielle looked at the screen.
"What's the purpose?""
Collins opened the company's filing.
At the top was a document titled:
*Family Asset Protection and Beneficiary Administration Agreement.*
Below it were three names.
Michael Carter.
Danielle Carter.
Olivia Carter.
Danielle read the document slowly.
Then she stopped.
"Wait.""
Collins looked up.
"What is it?""
"Why does it say Olivia is the primary beneficiary?""
Collins examined the section.
"Because the trust was established in her name.""
"But who controls it?""
He scrolled.
The answer appeared.
*Primary administrator: Michael Carter.*
*Secondary administrator: Thomas Reed.*
Danielle's heart sank.
"And me?""
Collins continued reading.
"You're listed as a beneficiary, not an administrator.""
Richard stepped closer.
"That makes no sense. Danielle never agreed to that arrangement.""
Collins looked at the signature page.
"The agreement was signed electronically.""
Danielle recognized the digital signature.
It was hers.
She remembered sitting at the kitchen island in September, heavily pregnant, while Michael brought her a stack of papers.
He had placed a glass of water beside her.
"Just sign these, sweetheart. They're boring insurance documents.""
She had been exhausted.
Her back had hurt.
She had trusted him.
Now she understood why he had insisted that she sign them without reading.
"Can we cancel it?"" she asked.
"Yes, but we need to establish whether the agreement was validly executed.""
Richard nodded.
"Do whatever is necessary.""
Collins closed the file.
"I also need to tell you something else.""
Danielle looked at him.
"Go ahead.""
"Meridian has already submitted an application to change the beneficiary structure of the trust.""
"To whom?""
Collins looked uncomfortable.
"Vanessa Reed.""
Danielle stared.
"Michael was going to make Vanessa the beneficiary of Olivia's trust?""
"That appears to be the intention.""
Richard's face turned red.
"He used his own daughter's name to transfer family assets to his mistress?""
Collins nodded.
"Yes.""
Danielle stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, the garden lights illuminated the wet stone pathway.
She remembered Michael touching her stomach during pregnancy.
He had whispered that their daughter would never want for anything.
He had promised to build her a future.
Apparently, he had been building something else entirely.
Her phone rang.
Vanessa.
Danielle answered.
"Hello?""
"Danielle, I need to tell you something.""
"What?""
"Michael just called me.""
Danielle looked at Collins.
"What did he say?""
"He asked where I was.""
"Did you tell him?""
"No. I told him I was at my brother's apartment.""
Danielle frowned.
"Why would you lie?""
"Because he sounded furious. He said someone had stolen his files.""
Richard stepped closer.
Danielle put the phone on speaker.
Vanessa continued.
"Then he asked whether I still had the original agreement.""
"What agreement?""
"The one about Olivia.""
Danielle's stomach tightened.
"Do you have it?""
"Yes. It's in my apartment.""
"Why?""
"Because Michael gave it to me to sign.""
Danielle closed her eyes.
"What exactly did he want you to sign?""
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"He wanted me to become the legal custodian of the trust if anything happened to him.""
Richard immediately looked at Collins.
Danielle felt a chill.
"Why would anything happen to him?""
"I don't know. He said it was a precaution.""
"Did you sign?""
"No.""
"Why not?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Because there was another page.""
"What page?""
"A declaration stating that Michael had sole parental authority over Olivia in the event that you were declared medically unfit.""
Danielle's blood ran cold.
Richard stepped forward.
"Did Michael explain why he wanted that?""
Vanessa's voice broke.
"He said you were emotionally unstable. He said the baby needed someone who could make decisions.""
Danielle gripped the edge of the table.
"Did he say how he planned to prove that?""
"Yes.""
"How?""
Vanessa was silent.
Then she whispered:
"He said he had recordings.""
Danielle stared at the phone.
"Recordings of what?""
"Your arguments. Your crying. Conversations when you were exhausted after the birth.""
Danielle's eyes filled.
She remembered one particular night.
Olivia had been crying for hours.
Michael had returned home after midnight, smelling of expensive cologne.
They had argued in the kitchen.
Danielle had cried because he refused to hold his daughter.
She had begged him to help.
He had taken out his phone.
She hadn't realized he was recording.
Vanessa continued.
"He said he was going to show the recordings to a private medical evaluator.""
Richard's expression became murderous.
"That's enough.""
Danielle barely heard him.
She was remembering something else.
A conversation from two weeks earlier.
Michael had asked whether she would ever consider taking a short break after Olivia's birth.
He had suggested spending a few days at a wellness retreat.
At the time, she had thought he was being considerate.
Now she wondered whether he had been preparing something.
Collins immediately opened his laptop.
"We need to identify every recording and every document connected to this proposed arrangement.""
Vanessa interrupted.
"There's something else.""
Danielle looked at the phone.
"What?""
"Michael told Thomas that the plan needed to happen before Monday.""
Richard checked the clock.
It was Friday evening.
"Why Monday?"" Collins asked.
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because that's when the final transfer is scheduled.""
Danielle looked at Collins.
"Can we stop it?""
"We're working on it.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Collins met her eyes.
"Yes. But we need to move quickly.""
Vanessa suddenly lowered her voice.
"Danielle?""
"What?""
"I think Michael is coming to your father's house.""
Everyone went still.
Richard walked toward the security monitor.
"Why would you think that?""
"Because he asked me where you were staying. And when I refused to answer, he said something.""
Danielle's throat tightened.
"What?""
Vanessa whispered:
"He said, 'If she won't come to me, I'll bring the paperwork to her.''"
At that exact moment, the security monitor beside Richard flickered.
A black SUV had stopped outside the front gate.
One of the guards approached the vehicle.
The driver's door opened.
Michael stepped out.
He wasn't carrying a suitcase this time.
He was carrying a large brown envelope.
And behind him stood a woman Danielle recognized from the hospital.
Patricia Wells.
The patient records manager.
Richard stared at the screen.
"Why is a hospital employee standing with him?""
Danielle slowly rose from her chair.
Then Michael lifted the envelope and pointed toward the house.
Even through the security camera, she could see his smile.
May you like
He mouthed four words.
*"I have the proof.""*
