Chapter 7: The Evidence at the Gate

Michael Carter had always known how to make an entrance.
He knew how to walk into a boardroom wearing an expensive suit and make everyone believe he belonged there. He knew how to smile at investors, shake hands with politicians, and convince strangers that his promises were worth millions.
But standing outside Richard Bennett's mansion, holding a brown envelope while two security officers blocked the entrance, he looked like a man who had run out of options.
Danielle watched him through the security monitor.
Beside him stood Patricia Wells, the hospital records manager.
Patricia looked uncomfortable.
She kept adjusting the strap of her handbag and glancing toward the guards.
Richard picked up the intercom.
"Michael, what do you want?""
Michael looked directly at the camera.
"I want to see my wife.""
"Your wife doesn't want to see you.""
"Then I'll speak to my daughter.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"She's asleep.""
"She's my daughter, Richard.""
"And you remembered that tonight?""
Michael's jaw tightened.
"Stop playing games. I have documents that Danielle needs to see.""
Richard glanced toward Danielle.
She was standing beside the staircase, holding Olivia.
"Put them through your attorney," Richard replied.
Michael shook his head.
"No. These documents concern my daughter's custody. I have the right to deliver them personally.""
Danielle stepped toward the intercom.
"Michael.""
His expression changed immediately.
"Danielle. Thank God.""
"What are you doing here?""
"I'm trying to fix this.""
"By bringing a hospital employee to my father's house?""
Michael glanced at Patricia.
"She's here to verify something.""
Danielle looked at the woman.
"Patricia, do you know why you're here?""
Patricia hesitated.
"Mrs. Carter, I was told there was an urgent issue involving your daughter's medical authorization.""
"By whom?""
She glanced at Michael.
"Mr. Carter.""
Danielle's voice became colder.
"Did he tell you that I was expecting you?""
Patricia lowered her eyes.
"No.""
Richard released the intercom button.
He turned toward Collins.
"Get the security footage running.""
Collins nodded.
"Already recording.""
Richard pressed the intercom again.
"Michael, you can leave the documents with security. Then you can leave.""
Michael laughed bitterly.
"You really think you can keep me away from my own family?""
Richard's expression didn't change.
"Watch me.""
Michael suddenly raised the envelope.
"Danielle, these papers prove that you signed away certain rights before Olivia was born.""
Danielle went still.
"What rights?""
"Parental authority. Financial control. Medical decision-making.""
"You're lying.""
"Then come outside and read them.""
Richard stepped between Danielle and the door.
"Don't.""
Michael looked toward the camera.
"She knows what she signed. She just doesn't want to admit it.""
Danielle felt Olivia move against her chest.
Her daughter made a tiny sound.
Danielle gently kissed her forehead.
Then she spoke into the intercom.
"Michael, if you have legitimate documents, send them to my attorney.""
He shook his head.
"Your attorney? You're making this impossible.""
"No. I'm making it legal.""
For the first time, Michael looked genuinely angry.
He turned toward Patricia.
"Tell her.""
Patricia swallowed.
"Mrs. Carter, the hospital received an authorization form granting Mr. Carter access to certain records and allowing him to make decisions under specific circumstances.""
Danielle stared at the monitor.
"Did you personally verify my signature?""
Patricia hesitated.
"I reviewed the document.""
"That wasn't my question.""
Michael interrupted.
"Patricia, just tell her what the document says.""
Danielle raised her voice.
"Did you verify my signature?""
Patricia looked at Michael.
Then back at the camera.
"No.""
Silence.
Danielle felt her heart pounding.
"Did you speak to me before releasing my daughter's records?""
"No.""
"Did you ask me to confirm the authorization?""
"No, Mrs. Carter.""
Richard immediately looked at Collins.
"Make sure that's recorded.""
Collins nodded.
Patricia looked increasingly nervous.
"Mr. Carter told me the authorization had already been verified through your family administrator.""
Danielle frowned.
"Who?""
"Meridian Family Management.""
Collins stepped forward.
"Patricia, did you receive any independent confirmation from that company?""
"No.""
"Did you contact the mother listed on the child's records?""
"No.""
"Then why did you release the documents?""
Patricia looked down.
"Because Mr. Carter said it was urgent.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"Unbelievable.""
Michael suddenly slapped the envelope against the metal gate.
"Enough! I'm not going to stand here while you interrogate everyone.""
Danielle looked at him.
"You came here to threaten me with paperwork you know is fraudulent.""
His expression changed.
"Careful.""
"Or what?""
He lowered his voice.
"You have no idea what I've been protecting you from.""
Danielle stared at him.
"Protecting me?""
"Yes.""
"You forged my signature, used our daughter's identity, and tried to make me look mentally incompetent.""
Michael shook his head.
"That's not what happened.""
"Then explain the recording.""
He stopped moving.
Richard looked toward Collins.
Collins opened his laptop and played a short section of the audio.
Michael's voice came through the outdoor speaker.
She trusts me. That's useful. Keep it that way.
Then Thomas's voice.
You're a terrible husband.
Michael's face went pale.
The recording ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Patricia looked at him.
"What is that?""
Michael turned sharply.
"Nothing.""
Danielle stared at him.
"Is that what you call a confession?""
Michael took a step toward the gate.
"That recording is illegal.""
Collins answered immediately.
"That question can be addressed through counsel. It doesn't change the fact that the recording has been preserved.""
Michael pointed toward the house.
"You have no right to use private conversations against me.""
Danielle's voice was quiet.
"You had no right to use my daughter.""
Michael looked at her.
For the first time, he seemed to realize that his usual excuses weren't working.
He tried another approach.
"Danielle, sweetheart, listen. We're both upset. We need to stop letting other people destroy our marriage.""
She almost laughed.
"Our marriage?""
"Yes.""
"You brought another woman to the marina and kissed her in front of me.""
"I made a mistake.""
"You used our daughter's identity.""
"I was building something for her.""
"You were transferring her money to Vanessa.""
"That wasn't what it looked like.""
"Then what did it look like, Michael?""
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Richard stepped toward the intercom.
"Leave.""
Michael looked furious.
Then he lifted the envelope again.
"Before I go, I want you to know something.""
Danielle waited.
Michael smiled.
It was a small, cruel smile she recognized from the early years of their marriage.
"You're so confident because you think your father can protect you. But you haven't seen the original trust agreement.""
Collins went still.
"What original agreement?""
Michael looked at him.
"The one Danielle signed in September.""
Danielle felt her stomach tighten.
"September?""
Michael nodded.
"The one that gives me sole authority over the family trust if certain conditions are met.""
Richard shook his head.
"That agreement is fraudulent.""
"Prove it.""
Michael turned toward Danielle.
"And when the conditions are triggered, your father won't be able to interfere.""
Danielle stared at him.
"What conditions?""
Michael held up the envelope.
"One of them is already in motion.""
He turned to the security officers.
"Good evening.""
Then he walked back toward his SUV.
Patricia remained at the gate.
She looked toward the camera.
"Mrs. Carter?""
Danielle answered.
"Yes?""
Patricia took a trembling breath.
"I think you should know that the hospital received another request this afternoon.""
"What request?""
Patricia swallowed.
"Someone asked us to prepare a discharge authorization for Olivia.""
Danielle felt the blood drain from her face.
"Discharge from where?""
"From the hospital's pediatric care system.""
"She's not in the hospital!""
"I know. That's why I refused it.""
Collins stepped forward.
"Who submitted the request?""
Patricia opened her handbag and removed a printed document.
"It was signed by Thomas Reed.""
Danielle looked toward Michael's departing vehicle.
The SUV had stopped near the end of the driveway.
Its brake lights glowed red.
Then Michael's phone screen illuminated.
He was making a call.
And a moment later, Richard's phone began ringing.
