Chapter 2: The Man Michael Never Expected to See

Michael Carter had built his career on knowing exactly who mattered in a room.
He knew which investors wanted to be flattered, which executives could be intimidated, and which wealthy clients preferred expensive gifts over honest answers.
He had spent fifteen years learning how to control conversations.
But as he stared toward the entrance of the marina, he couldn't remember how to speak.
The man walking toward him was Richard Bennett.
Michael's former father-in-law.
And the founder of Bennett Capital.
Richard was sixty-three, tall, broad-shouldered, and impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his expression was as calm as the surface of the water.
Two security officers followed him.
A third man carried a slim leather briefcase.
Michael swallowed.
"Richard?""
Richard didn't answer immediately.
He looked at Danielle.
Then at the stroller.
Then at Michael.
"Good afternoon, Michael.""
Michael forced a nervous smile.
"I didn't know you were coming.""
"Clearly.""
Vanessa shifted beside him.
She had heard the name Bennett before.
Michael had mentioned it countless times during their private dinners, usually while explaining why his business ambitions had become more complicated.
She had never met the man.
"Michael," she whispered, "who is that?""
He ignored her.
"Richard, this isn't a good time.""
Richard glanced toward Olivia.
"On the contrary. I believe this is exactly the right time.""
Danielle remained beside the stroller.
Her hands were steady now.
Richard approached her and gently touched her shoulder.
"How are you doing, sweetheart?""
"I'm okay, Dad.""
Michael blinked.
Dad.
He looked between them.
"Wait. You called him?""
Danielle nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because you asked me to bring Olivia here.""
Michael stared at her.
"I never asked you to bring Olivia here.""
"You did.""
"When?""
Danielle took her phone from her handbag.
"Tuesday. You sent me a message saying you wanted to meet her somewhere private because you didn't want photographs of the baby circulating online.""
Michael's forehead creased.
"I meant another day.""
"No. You specifically chose this marina.""
Richard turned toward him.
"Interesting. You seem to have forgotten quite a few things lately.""
Michael tried to recover his composure.
"Richard, with all due respect, my marriage is between Danielle and me. Whatever problems we're having, they don't concern you.""
Richard gave him a long look.
"Your marriage became my concern when you began using my company's resources to finance your affair.""
Vanessa's head snapped toward Michael.
"What?""
Michael's jaw tightened.
"Richard, we should discuss this privately.""
"No.""
Richard gestured toward the man holding the briefcase.
"Mr. Collins, please.""
The man stepped forward.
He was wearing a navy suit and carrying a leather folder.
"Michael Carter?"" he asked.
"Yes.""
"I'm Daniel Collins, legal counsel for Bennett Capital.""
Michael looked from him to Richard.
"What is this?""
Collins opened the folder.
"I'm here to deliver formal notice regarding the suspension of your executive authority pending an internal investigation.""
Michael laughed.
It was a short, nervous sound.
"You're joking.""
"No, sir.""
"Richard, you cannot suspend me. I'm the managing director of Carter Development.""
"Not anymore.""
Michael's expression hardened.
"You don't own Carter Development.""
Richard nodded.
"That's correct. But Bennett Capital owns sixty-two percent of it.""
Michael went still.
Vanessa looked at him.
"Sixty-two percent?""
He didn't answer.
Richard continued.
"Your company was facing bankruptcy when my daughter married you. I personally arranged the investment that kept it alive. I trusted you with the business because Danielle believed you were a good man.""
Michael looked toward Danielle.
"Don't tell me you're behind this.""
Danielle didn't respond.
Richard answered instead.
"She isn't behind anything. You did this yourself.""
Michael shook his head.
"This is ridiculous. We're talking about a personal disagreement.""
Collins turned a page.
"The preliminary review identified several questionable transactions involving company funds, private travel expenses, and payments to entities associated with Ms. Vanessa Reed.""
Vanessa's face lost its color.
"Excuse me?""
Michael finally turned toward her.
"Vanessa, don't.""
She pulled her arm away.
"What payments?""
"Not here.""
"You told me your company paid for the apartment.""
"Vanessa.""
"And the car.""
Michael lowered his voice.
"Stop talking.""
She stared at him.
For the first time that afternoon, Vanessa seemed to understand that she might not be standing beside a wealthy, powerful man.
She might be standing beside someone who had been stealing from his own company.
Richard looked at the stroller.
"How old is Olivia now?""
"Six weeks," Danielle answered.
Richard smiled faintly.
"She's beautiful.""
"Thank you, Dad.""
Michael rubbed his forehead.
"Can we please stop pretending this is some kind of family reunion?""
Richard turned toward him.
"No one is pretending anything.""
He stepped closer.
"Do you remember what you told me when you asked for my daughter's hand in marriage?""
Michael said nothing.
"You stood in my living room and promised me that you would protect her. You said you would never allow her to feel alone.""
Richard's voice remained quiet.
"Today, I watched you kiss another woman in front of your wife and newborn child.""
Michael looked away.
"I made a mistake.""
Danielle let out a small, disbelieving laugh.
"A mistake?""
He turned toward her.
"Danielle, please. We can talk about this.""
"About which part?""
"All of it.""
"Your girlfriend? The money? The lies? Or the fact that you looked at your own daughter and acted like she was an inconvenience?""
Michael stepped closer.
"I was caught off guard.""
Danielle looked at him.
"You knew I was coming.""
"I didn't know Richard would be here.""
"That's the problem, Michael.""
She leaned slightly over the stroller.
"You were worried about who might see you. You weren't worried about what you were doing to us.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Michael, you said she knew.""
Danielle turned.
"Excuse me?""
Vanessa looked uncomfortable but continued.
"He told me you had an arrangement. That you were staying together because of the baby and the money.""
Danielle stared at Michael.
"An arrangement?""
Michael's face tightened.
"Vanessa, enough.""
"No, I want to know what's happening!"" Vanessa snapped.
"You told me your wife didn't care where you went. You said she was only interested in the lifestyle.""
Danielle looked down at her beige blazer.
Then at the gold silk dress.
She almost laughed.
The clothes Michael had once praised were suddenly evidence in his mind that she had never loved him for anything except his money.
"You believed that?"" Danielle asked.
Vanessa hesitated.
"Michael told me—"
"Michael tells people whatever they need to hear.""
The words hung between them.
Richard glanced at Collins.
"Please continue.""
Collins removed another document.
"Michael, effective immediately, your corporate cards and access to company accounts have been suspended. You are also required to surrender your company-issued devices pending forensic review.""
Michael's mouth tightened.
"You can't do this.""
"We can," Collins replied.
"The board has authorized the action.""
Michael looked at Danielle again.
His voice softened.
"Baby, listen to me.""
She didn't move.
"Whatever you think you saw today, there's an explanation.""
Danielle's expression remained unchanged.
"Is there?""
"Yes.""
"Then explain it.""
Michael glanced toward Vanessa.
For the first time, he seemed unable to choose which lie to tell.
Richard stepped between them.
"Michael, I suggest you stop speaking until your attorney arrives.""
Michael looked furious.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""
Richard shook his head.
"No. I am disappointed.""
He turned toward Danielle.
"Come on, sweetheart. Let's get Olivia somewhere comfortable.""
Danielle nodded.
She unlocked the stroller's brake.
But before she could move, Michael reached for the handle.
"Wait.""
Richard's security officer stepped forward.
Michael stopped.
"Danielle, please. We need to talk about our daughter.""
Danielle looked at his hand.
Then at him.
"You had six weeks to ask about her.""
He lowered his eyes.
"I know.""
"You had six weeks to visit.""
"I was busy.""
"Six weeks to ask whether she was healthy. Whether she was sleeping. Whether she had been sick. Whether I was recovering.""
Michael's lips parted.
No answer came.
Danielle pushed the stroller forward.
Richard walked beside her.
Vanessa remained near the dock, staring at Michael.
Then she spoke.
"Michael, you told me your wife had no power over your company.""
He turned sharply.
"Not now.""
She held up her phone.
"Then what is this?""
Michael glanced at the screen.
His face changed.
It was a photograph of a document.
A document bearing his signature.
And at the bottom was a name Vanessa had never expected to see.
*Danielle Carter.*
"Where did you get that?"" Michael demanded.
May you like
Vanessa took a step backward.
"Michael, what did you do?""
