Chapter 8: The Brother Who Sold Them Both

Richard answered the call.
"Thomas.""
There was a long pause.
Then a familiar voice came through.
"Richard, we need to talk.""
Richard looked at Danielle.
"About what?""
"About Michael.""
"You're a little late.""
Thomas sighed.
"I understand you're angry.""
"Angry?""
Richard walked toward the window.
"You used my company's registration details to move money through fraudulent accounts. You helped Michael forge my daughter's signature. And now you've involved my granddaughter.""
Thomas remained silent.
Richard continued.
"I want to know why.""
"You're misunderstanding the situation.""
"Then explain it.""
Another pause.
Thomas lowered his voice.
"Michael has been making decisions without consulting me. I tried to stop him.""
Richard laughed without humor.
"You're telling me you had nothing to do with this?""
"I never authorized the use of Olivia's identity.""
Danielle stepped closer.
"Then why did you submit a hospital request using my daughter's name?""
Thomas went quiet.
Richard turned toward her.
"Danielle is here.""
Thomas exhaled.
"Danielle, I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
"Your husband was trying to protect the family assets.""
"By stealing them?""
"By restructuring them.""
"With forged signatures?""
"Those documents were prepared under legal guidance.""
Danielle's voice sharpened.
"Whose legal guidance?""
Thomas didn't answer.
"Thomas, whose?""
He finally said, "Michael's attorney.""
Collins looked up.
"Which attorney?""
Thomas continued.
"Michael hired someone to manage the trust. I was only handling administrative matters.""
Danielle shook her head.
"You were handling my daughter's hospital records.""
"That was a separate matter.""
"Nothing involving my daughter is separate from me.""
Thomas sighed.
"Look, Danielle. You're understandably emotional. I think it would be better if we discussed this when you've had time to calm down.""
Richard's face hardened.
"Don't ever speak to my daughter like that again.""
Thomas raised his voice.
"Richard, I'm trying to prevent this from becoming a disaster.""
"You should have thought of that before you started stealing.""
Richard ended the call.
For a moment, the room was silent.
Then Collins received an email.
He opened it.
His expression changed.
"What is it?"" Richard asked.
Collins read the message.
"The bank has frozen the remaining transfers connected to the fraudulent vendor account.""
Richard nodded.
"Good.""
"But there's a problem.""
Danielle looked up.
"What problem?""
"One of the transfers cleared before the freeze.""
"How much?""
Collins checked the attachment.
"Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""
Richard frowned.
"Where did it go?""
Collins enlarged the transaction details.
"An offshore account.""
Danielle looked at him.
"Whose account?""
He hesitated.
"Thomas Reed's.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"That coward.""
Collins scrolled further.
"There's also a scheduled payment for Monday morning.""
"How much?""
"Two point four million.""
Richard looked toward the window.
"Can we stop it?""
"We're trying.""
Danielle sat down slowly.
It seemed every time they uncovered one lie, another appeared underneath it.
Michael had cheated.
Michael had stolen.
Michael had forged documents.
Thomas had helped him.
Vanessa had benefited.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it was a newborn baby whose name had become a financial instrument.
Her phone rang.
Vanessa again.
Danielle answered.
"Hello?""
"Danielle, you need to listen to me.""
"What happened?""
"My brother is coming to my apartment.""
"Why?""
"He called me. He wants the original documents.""
"Don't give them to him.""
"I won't.""
"Where are you?""
"In my apartment.""
Danielle looked at Collins.
"Can you get someone there?""
Collins nodded.
"Send me the address.""
Vanessa did.
Then she lowered her voice.
"There's something else I found.""
Danielle waited.
"I found an old email from Michael.""
"What does it say?""
"He was discussing the original trust agreement with Thomas.""
"Read it.""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Michael wrote that the trust was designed to transfer control if you became unable to manage your financial affairs.""
Danielle closed her eyes.
"Yes. We know about that.""
"No, Danielle. There's another part.""
"What?""
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
"He wrote that the trigger could be activated by a medical determination.""
Danielle stared at the phone.
"What medical determination?""
"A psychiatric evaluation.""
Richard turned toward her.
Collins immediately opened his laptop.
Vanessa continued.
"He said that if he could obtain an evaluation confirming you were experiencing severe emotional instability, he could temporarily assume control of the trust.""
Danielle's chest tightened.
"How?""
"Through a private medical panel.""
Collins looked up sharply.
"Who was on the panel?""
Vanessa read from the email.
"Dr. Elaine Foster.""
Richard frowned.
"Do you know her?""
Collins shook his head.
"Not personally.""
Vanessa continued.
"Michael said she had already agreed to review the recordings.""
Danielle remembered the phone calls.
The questions Michael had asked about her sleep.
The times he had insisted she was crying too much.
The moments he had told her she was becoming forgetful.
He had been building a story around her.
A story designed to make her doubt herself.
"Did he mention when the evaluation would happen?"" Danielle asked.
Vanessa scrolled.
"Tomorrow morning.""
Richard looked at the clock.
It was almost midnight.
"Tomorrow?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Michael was supposed to deliver the recordings tonight.""
Collins stood.
"That's enough. We need to locate this doctor and establish whether any formal assessment has been scheduled.""
Richard immediately called his security director.
"Get the vehicle ready. We're going to Bennett Capital.""
Danielle looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because I want to know how many people inside that building helped them.""
Collins gathered the documents.
"I'll contact the medical board and our external counsel.""
Danielle looked down at Olivia.
Her daughter had begun to fuss.
She gently rocked the stroller.
"Shh, sweetheart.""
Then her phone vibrated again.
An email.
The sender was unfamiliar.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: CUSTODY EVALUATION NOTICE*
Danielle opened it.
The document stated that an emergency review had been requested regarding her parental decision-making capacity.
Her name appeared at the top.
Michael's name appeared below it.
And at the bottom was a scheduled appointment.
Saturday.
9:00 a.m.
Location: Northbridge Family Assessment Center.
Danielle stared at the screen.
"He's already filed it.""
Collins took the phone.
He read the document carefully.
"Who signed this?""
Danielle pointed to the bottom.
Dr. Elaine Foster.
Richard looked at Collins.
"Is this legitimate?""
Collins shook his head.
"We need to verify it.""
Danielle scrolled down.
There was another attachment.
A list of supporting evidence.
The first item was a recording of Danielle crying in the kitchen.
The second was a photograph of her sitting on the nursery floor with her head in her hands.
The third was a written statement from Michael.
It claimed that Danielle had repeatedly threatened to abandon the baby.
She looked at Richard.
"I never said that.""
"I know.""
"He recorded me when I was exhausted.""
"I know, sweetheart.""
She turned toward Collins.
"Can he actually take Olivia away from me?""
Collins answered carefully.
"An allegation alone doesn't automatically remove parental rights. Any action would require proper legal authority and due process. But we need to challenge the false information immediately.""
Richard nodded.
"Then we do that.""
Danielle looked at the appointment notice again.
"Where is Michael now?""
Collins checked his phone.
"His vehicle was last seen leaving your father's property.""
"Can we find him?""
"Possibly.""
Then another email arrived.
This one was from an address associated with Thomas Reed.
It contained a single attachment.
A scanned letter.
Collins opened it.
His face went pale.
"What?""
He turned the screen toward Richard.
The letter was dated six months earlier.
It contained a statement signed by Michael, Thomas, and Dr. Elaine Foster.
At the bottom was a paragraph that made Danielle's stomach drop.
*In the event of a medical determination affecting Danielle Carter's ability to exercise parental judgment, temporary custody and administrative authority shall be transferred to the designated family representative.*
Danielle read the final line.
The designated representative was not Michael.
It was Thomas Reed.
Richard stared at the document.
"Why would they give Thomas custody?""
Collins scrolled to the final page.
There was a second signature.
A witness.
And Danielle recognized the name immediately.
It belonged to someone who had been present at Olivia's birth.
May you like
Someone she had trusted.
Someone who had promised to protect her daughter.
