Chapter 11: The Person Who Signed Away My Trust
I had known Attorney Marcus Reed for six years.
Six years.
He helped me buy my first home.
He reviewed my marriage documents.
He helped my parents with their estate planning.
When I thought about people I trusted, his name was always near the top.
That was the problem.
The people closest to you are the ones who know where to cut.
When I entered the hospital security office, Detective Miller was already waiting.
Jasmine stood beside me.
Neither of us spoke.
The detective looked at my face.
“You know.””
I frowned.
“Know what?””
He placed a file on the table.
“Who accessed the documents.””
My heart sank.
“Marcus Reed?””
Detective Miller nodded.
I closed my eyes.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I wasn’t denying the evidence.
I was denying the possibility.
Because some betrayals are too large for your brain to process.
“Why would he do this?””
Detective Miller opened the file.
“We’re still investigating.””
Jasmine looked angry.
“He helped Terrence.””
The detective nodded.
“Evidence suggests they communicated.””
“How?””
“Emails. Calls. Document transfers.””
My stomach turned.
I looked at the security footage.
The image of Jasmine had already destroyed one piece of my life.
Now there was another.
Marcus entering the hospital.
Marcus carrying a folder.
Marcus meeting Terrence.
The date.
The night before my surgery.
I whispered:
“He was there.””
Detective Miller nodded.
“Yes.””
I sat silently.
Thinking about every conversation.
Every time Marcus told me:
“Your husband is lucky to have someone like you.””
Every time he smiled and said:
“Everything looks fine.””
Everything.
A lie.
I looked at Jasmine.
“Why didn’t you tell me about Marcus?””
She looked down.
“I didn’t know until recently.””
“When?””
“After the surgery.””
I looked away.
Everyone knew after the surgery.
Everyone except me.
Detective Miller pulled out another document.
“This is the part you need to see.””
I looked.
A transfer record.
Money.
Large amounts.
Going from an account connected to Terrence’s business.
To an account connected to Marcus Reed.
I felt sick.
“Payment.””
Detective Miller nodded.
“Yes.””
“For what?””
He looked at me.
“We believe legal manipulation.””
The room became quiet.
Jasmine whispered:
“He was preparing everything.””
Detective Miller nodded.
“He wanted the appearance of a clean separation after the transplant.””
I looked down.
A clean separation.
That phrase hurt.
Like my marriage was a business transaction.
Like my love was paperwork.
“Where is Marcus now?””
The detective looked serious.
“He knows we’re investigating.””
“And?””
“He disappeared.””
Of course.
The person behind everything disappeared.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
Terrence.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
But I answered.
“What?””
His voice was shaking.
“Keisha, where are you?””
“Why?””
“I need to talk to you.””
“You’ve had plenty of chances.””
“I found something.””
I closed my eyes.
“Another secret?””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
I almost laughed.
“What now?””
His voice became quieter.
“It’s about Marcus.””
I looked at Detective Miller.
He immediately paid attention.
“What about him?””
Terrence took a breath.
“Marcus wasn’t helping me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was helping someone else.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Terrence.””
“I’m serious.””
His voice cracked.
“When I found out what he was doing, I confronted him.””
“When?””
“Last week.””
My heart skipped.
“You confronted him while I was recovering?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I was scared.””
I closed my eyes.
Again.
That word.
“I found something in his office.””
“What?””
“A file.””
“What file?””
Terrence was quiet.
Then he said:
“A file with your name on it.””
I felt a chill.
“What was inside?””
His breathing changed.
“Information about you.””
“What kind of information?””
He whispered:
“Your medical history.””
The room went silent.
Detective Miller leaned closer.
I knew that look.
He knew something.
“Terrence.””
“Yes?””
“Who gave Marcus that information?””
His silence lasted too long.
Then he said:
“Keisha…”
My voice became cold.
“Who?””
He finally answered.
May you like
And the name that came out of his mouth broke me.
“Your mother.””
