Chapter 12: The Family Secret Nobody Wanted Me to Know

I ended the call.

I didn’t say goodbye.

I couldn’t.

Because if I heard Terrence’s voice for one more second, I wasn’t sure whether I would scream or cry.

My mother.

The person who taught me how to walk.

The person who held me when I had nightmares as a child.

The person who told me, “Always trust your heart.””

Had given someone my medical information.

I looked at Detective Miller.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

The detective didn’t answer.

That was all I needed.

Jasmine whispered:

“Keisha…”

I stood up emotionally before I remembered I physically couldn’t.

My body reminded me immediately.

Pain.

Weakness.

Reality.

I lowered myself back into the chair.

“My mother?””

Detective Miller spoke carefully.

“We need to verify everything before making conclusions.””

I nodded.

But inside, something had already broken.

Because suddenly my entire life felt like a room full of people whispering behind a locked door.

And I was the only one without a key.

I called my mother.

She answered after one ring.

“Keisha?””

Her voice sounded normal.

Warm.

That almost made it worse.

“Mom.””

A pause.

“What’s wrong?””

I looked at Detective Miller.

Then at Jasmine.

Then at the hospital window.

“Did you give Marcus Reed my medical records?””

Silence.

Not confusion.

Not shock.

Silence.

My heart sank.

“Mom?””

Her voice became smaller.

“Who told you?””

I closed my eyes.

That was enough.

“Why?””

She started crying.

“Keisha, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Everyone keeps telling me to listen.””

I swallowed.

“I listened when Terrence said he loved me.””

“I listened when Danielle said she was protecting me.””

“I listened when everyone told me I was doing the right thing.””

My voice broke.

“And now I’m finding out everyone knew something except me.””

My mother cried harder.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed softly.

“I’m tired of that sentence.””

She was quiet.

“Mom.””

“Yes?””

“Why?””

A long pause.

Then she said:

“Because I knew something was wrong with Terrence.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I found out about his debts.””

My fingers tightened.

“How?””

“Marcus told me.””

Of course.

Marcus again.

“He said Terrence was using you.””

My breath stopped.

“And you believed him?””

“I didn’t know what to believe.””

“Then why give him my records?””

My mother’s voice broke.

“Because I wanted to know if the surgery was safe.””

I closed my eyes.

“You didn’t trust the doctors?””

“I trusted you.””

The answer confused me.

“What?””

“I trusted your heart.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“Mom…”

She continued:

“But I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would die trying to save someone who wasn’t worth saving.””

The words hurt.

Because buried inside them was something I hated admitting.

Maybe she was right to worry.

But she was wrong to betray me.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice became firmer.

“You should have let me choose.””

Silence.

The truth.

The thing everyone had taken from me.

Choice.

My mother whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at the hospital room across the hall.

Where my husband was recovering from the life I gave him.

Where my family had built a wall around me.

“I need the truth.””

“You deserve it.””

“Then tell me everything.””

She hesitated.

“There’s one thing.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“The reason Marcus was interested in your medical records…”

I waited.

“Wasn’t because of the transplant.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then why?””

My mother cried.

“Because your records showed something about Terrence’s illness.””

I froze.

“What?””

She whispered:

“Keisha…”

A pause.

Then:

“Your husband was never the only person being tested for a kidney transplant.””

The world stopped.

“What are you saying?””

My mother took a shaky breath.

“I’m saying the hospital originally had another donor option.””

My hands went cold.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“Terrence’s biological brother.””

I frowned.

“He doesn’t have a brother.””

Silence.

Then my mother said the words I would never forget.

“He does.””

I stared ahead.

“What?””

“Terrence has a brother he never told you about.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

My mother’s voice cracked.

“Because that brother is the reason Terrence needed the transplant in the first place.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, Detective Miller’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then he stood.

“Are you sure?””

My heart raced.

“What happened?””

Detective Miller looked at me.

And I knew from his expression.

Something new had been discovered.

Something bigger.

“Mrs. Walker…”

He slowly lowered the phone.

“We found Terrence’s brother.””

I waited.

“He’s been trying to contact you for weeks.””

My voice barely came out.

“Why?””

Detective Miller looked at me.

“Because he says Terrence’s kidney failure was not an accident.””

The room went silent.

“He says your husband knew exactly what was coming.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Coming from who?””

The detective opened the door.

A man stood outside.

Same eyes as Terrence.

Same smile.

But a completely different expression.

Fear.

He looked directly at me.

And whispered:

“Keisha… your husband didn’t need a kidney.””

May you like

A pause.

“He needed a way to hide the truth.””
