Chapter 14: The Woman Who Was Also Betrayed

Monica stood at the door holding a folder.

Not confident.

Not angry.

Not like the woman I had first seen beside Terrence’s hospital bed.

She looked exhausted.

Broken.

Like she had spent days carrying a secret too heavy for one person.

Terrence stared at her.

“Why are you here?””

Monica looked at him.

“I’m here because I finally realized something.””

“What?””

Her eyes moved to me.

“That I wasn’t the person he chose.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried pain.

I didn’t know how to feel.

This woman had hurt me.

But she had also been lied to.

Maybe that was the cruelest part.

Everyone in this story had been used.

Monica walked closer.

“I owe you an apology.””

I didn’t answer.

She nodded.

“I know it doesn’t fix anything.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“It doesn’t.””

She accepted that.

“I was wrong.””

Terrence looked angry.

“Monica, stop.””

She turned toward him.

“No.””

For the first time, I saw someone stand up to him.

“You told me she knew.””

Terrence looked away.

“You told me your marriage was over.””

Silence.

“You told me you were only staying because you felt trapped.””

My chest tightened.

Monica looked at me.

“I believed him.””

I nodded slowly.

“I know.””

She swallowed.

“I found out the truth after the surgery.””

“How?””

She held up the folder.

“Marcus.””

Everyone went still.

“What about Marcus?””

Monica opened the folder.

“He contacted me.””

Terrence’s expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted me to leave.””

I frowned.

“Leave?””

She nodded.

“He said the plan was changing.””

The word made my stomach tighten.

“Plan?””

Monica looked at Terrence.

“Tell her.””

He stayed silent.

Monica continued.

“Marcus told me Terrence was supposed to publicly separate from you after recovery.””

I already knew that.

But then she added:

“But after the transplant, Terrence became too valuable.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She placed a document on the table.

A business contract.

I looked at it.

Terrence’s company.

A new investment agreement.

Signed after surgery.

I stared.

“What am I looking at?””

Monica pointed.

“The transplant story.””

I looked confused.

“He used it to rebuild his reputation.””

Adrian nodded.

“He became the man who was saved by his devoted wife.””

Monica looked down.

“But nobody knew he was planning to abandon that wife afterward.””

My heart hurt.

Not because it was new.

Because hearing it repeatedly made it real.

I looked at Terrence.

“Was any part of our marriage real?””

He cried silently.

“Yes.””

“Which part?””

He couldn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Detective Miller stepped forward.

“We have enough evidence now to move forward.””

Terrence looked at him.

“For what?””

The detective didn’t soften it.

“Fraud investigation.””

The room went quiet.

Terrence looked at me.

Not the detective.

Me.

“Keisha.””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

The words were almost impossible to hear.

Because I had waited months for them.

And now they meant nothing.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

His face lifted slightly.

“But I don’t forgive you.””

The pain in his eyes was real.

But so was mine.

“I don’t know if I ever can.””

He nodded.

Like he understood.

Like maybe, finally, he understood something.

I turned toward Adrian.

“Why did you help me?””

He looked surprised.

“Because someone should have.””

That answer stayed with me.

Someone should have.

Someone should have told me.

Someone should have protected me.

Someone should have trusted me.

I looked around the room.

At my husband.

My sister.

My mother’s empty chair.

The people who loved me.

The people who hurt me.

And I realized something.

The worst betrayal wasn’t that people lied.

It was that they believed I couldn’t handle the truth.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from Detective Miller.

*We found the person who originally altered the transplant paperwork.*

My heart stopped.

I looked up.

“Who?””

The detective stared at the screen.

Then at me.

“I think you already know.””

I opened the message.

A name appeared.

A name I had not heard in months.

A name that made Monica cover her mouth.

A name that made Terrence look terrified.

Because the person who changed the paperwork…

wasn’t trying to destroy my marriage.

They were trying to expose it.

May you like

The name on the screen was:

*Evelyn Walker.*
